5 passengers, 2 crew fall ill on Air India flight, food poisoning suspected
A suspected case of food poisoning disrupted Air India 's flight AI 130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai on Monday, leaving at least five passengers and two crew members ill mid-air, according to a report by The Times of India.
Initially, it was reported that as many as 11 people, including six cabin crew members, had fallen ill. However, Air India clarified to The Hindustan Times that the number stood at seven — five passengers and two crew members.
Passengers began experiencing symptoms such as nausea, dizziness, and general discomfort during various phases of the long-haul flight. Upon landing safely in Mumbai, two passengers and two crew members still reported feeling unwell. They were promptly taken to the airport's medical facility for further evaluation and later discharged after receiving treatment.
Cause under investigation
While the airline has yet to confirm the root cause, an internal source pointed toward food poisoning as the most likely explanation. The source added that while symptoms like dizziness can sometimes result from cabin depressurisation — which affects oxygen levels and usually triggers oxygen masks — there were no signs of such an event on this flight.
'The absence of oxygen mask deployment suggests this was not a depressurisation issue,' the source told The Hindustan Times. 'Food poisoning remains the primary suspect.'
Air India issues statement
Confirming the incident, Air India issued a statement saying, 'On board flight AI-130 from London Heathrow to Mumbai, five passengers and two crew reported feeling dizzy and nauseous during different phases of the flight. The flight landed safely in Mumbai where our medical teams were ready to provide immediate medical assistance.
'After landing, two passengers and two cabin crew, who continued to feel unwell, were taken to the medical room for further examination and were later discharged. We are investigating the incident and have duly notified the regulator,' it said.
The airline further emphasised that passenger safety remains a top priority and assured that a thorough internal review is underway.

(HT PHOTO) The final death toll of 260 — comprising 241 passengers and crew members aboard the aircraft and 19 people killed on the ground — is lower than initial estimates of 270 fatalities. 'The plane crash death toll stands at 260. We will not reveal victim identities. All bodies have been recovered and identified, with the mortal remains of all of them handed over to their families,' additional chief secretary of health and family welfare Dhananjay Dwivedi told HT. Dr Rakesh Joshi, the head of Ahmedabad civil hospital, told HT that all remains were identified and verified using DNA matching and facial recognition. 'The last body, of a passenger, was identified on Friday night using DNA match,' Joshi said. The London-bound Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college hostel complex approximately 30 seconds after take-off on 12 June from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, destroying portions of the building and bursting into flames. Among the victims were junior doctors, staff at the hospital complex and people on the street below. One passenger, in what has been described as a providential escape, walked out of the crash after he was thrown further away from the burning wreckage. The impact of the crash and the inferno that followed meant remains of most victims, except for most of the 19 casualties on the ground, were unrecognisable, requiring officials to seek DNA samples from family members to help make the identification. 'Four of the people were brought in alive but succumbed to their injuries during treatment. In all, 71 people were injured and hospitalised, with most treated at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital and others at Zydus Hospital, KD Hospital, and Apollo Hospital. Of these, 67 patients have been discharged from medical facilities,' said Dwivedi. An official aware of the development said that the final DNA matching was that of Anil Khimani, 32, from Bhuj in Kutch, adding that the condition of those discharged is said to be stable. Among the 260 deaths, 254 victims were identified through DNA testing and the remaining through facial recognition. The DNA identification process, which typically takes months, was completed in approximately two weeks, experts said. A total of 318 body parts were recovered from the crash site at Meghaninagar, said a senior police official, asking not to be named. One forensics experts who worked on the cases said the challenge was such that one of the living remains that were recovered later turned out to be that of a bird -- a confirmation that came only after repeated attempts to extract information from a deteriorated sample once it did not throw up any match. Dr Bhargav Patel, head of the Centre of Excellence in DNA Forensics at NFSU, said his team of 32 scientists and PhD scholars processed more than 150 DNA samples from crash victims. DNA samples from 250 relatives were collected at Ahmedabad Forensic Science Laboratory, whilst matching was conducted at FSL Gandhinagar and NFSU. Bodies have been repatriated across multiple states and countries, with Ahmedabad receiving the largest number at 73, followed by Anand with 29 and Vadodara with 24. Thirteen bodies were sent to the United Kingdom. The aircraft took off at 1:39 pm local time and reached an altitude of 625 feet before losing signal, according to flight tracking data. The crew issued a mayday call reporting loss of power and thrust less than a minute after takeoff. The crash marked the first fatal accident and hull loss of Boeing's 787 Dreamliner since the aircraft entered commercial service in 2011. It represents India's deadliest aviation disaster since the 1996 Charkhi Dadri mid-air collision. India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau is leading the investigation with assistance from the US National Transportation Safety Board and British investigators. Both flight data recorders have been recovered from the crash site.

New Delhi: Following the news of actor-model Shefali Jariwala's untimely death, an old interview of her's has resurfaced in which she spoke about her long battle with epilepsy and how it affected her career. According to sources, Shefali Jariwala had been undergoing special treatment for the past five to six years to maintain a youthful appearance. The medicines used in the process mainly included Vitamin C and Glutathione. Dr Rahul Chawla, Consultant Neurologist, Institute of Brain and Spine has now shared his take and advice on the relationship between epilepsy and cardiac arrest and the use of Glutathione with its adverse effects. He told NDTV, "Regarding IV Glutathione and IV detoxifying drips, they are not guideline recommended. They have no high-quality evidence showing any effect. They do have their harmful adverse effects including cardiac conduction abnormalities, arrhythmia, and hypotension. There have been multiple case reports where patients have died after taking those IV detoxifying drips and probably sudden collapse or sudden hypotension was the reason behind those deaths. However, we cannot correlate any sudden cardiac death of a person with a history of having glutathione or detox drips." "One thing to be remembered is that any supplement that seems too good to be true and does not have RCT or Meta-analysis level of evidence, is not recommended by guidelines and has potential adverse effects, should not be used," concluded the Consultant Neurologist. Glutathione is a drug often used for skin fairness and detoxification. Doctors have stated that these medications do not have a direct impact on the heart, and are typically used for cosmetic enhancement only. As of now, the actual cause of death will be known only after the forensic and post-mortem reports are out. Shefali Jariwala had earlier opened up on her history with epilepsy which she had been suffering from since the age of 15. Medical professionals have said that SUDEP or Sudden Unexplained Death in a condition like Epilepsy is possible. It is rare, however can happen when it leads to fatal heart complications. In an earlier interview with The Times of India, Shefali revealed that she was diagnosed with epilepsy at the age of 15. "I had an epilepsy seizure at the age of 15. I remember at that time I was under tremendous pressure to do well in my studies. Stress and anxiety can lead to seizures. It's interrelated; you could get a seizure due to depression and vice versa," she said. SUDEP happens at night when the patient is lying down, and may have a seizure- leading to a cardiac arrest. Patients who have epilepsy may have recurrent seizures and if not treated timely, such patients may die. It leads to instantaneous death and there are no chances of recovery. Shefali Jariwala reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest at her Mumbai residence late Friday. Parag Tyagi rushed her to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival. As of now, a post-mortem is done and the results are awaited to confirm the cause behind her death.

Meanwhile, upon landing, the sick were attended by a medical team at the airport. Furthermore, one of the individuals who fell ill required hospitalisation. The issue reportedly started when the aircraft was over the Arabian Sea. Air India Ahmedabad Crash The issues also come at a time when the nation is reeling from the aftermath of the tragic Air India flight AI171 crash in Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff on June 12. The flight had departed from Ahmedabad at 1:38 pm and had 242 passengers, including crew members, on board. Notably, it was a Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The ill-fated plane crashed into the building of BJ Medical College and resulted in deaths and injuries to individuals who were not onboard. The government and authorities sprang into action. According to a release of the Ministry of Civil Aviation, dated June 26, 2025, both the Cockpit Voice Recorders (CVR) and Flight Data Recorders (FDR) were recovered—one from the rooftop of the building at the crash site and the other from the debris. "Subsequently, the black boxes were brought from Ahmedabad to Delhi by IAF aircraft with full security on 24 June, 2025. The front black box arrived at AAIB Lab, Delhi with the DG, AAIB at 1400 hrs on 24 June, 2025. The rear black box was brought by a second AAIB team and reached AAIB Lab, Delhi at 1715 hrs on 24 June, 2025," the release added.
