O'Brien said: 'It was a shock for everyone in the football club. From a personal point of view, I absolutely loved the manager. He will always be my manager.'
When asked if he would be interested in taking the Shels reins, O'Brien said: 'I'm here but I'm as shocked and stunned as everyone else was.
'What has happened is part of the game. The only thing you can do is perform and that's your job. I felt that all of them stood up and put in a performance.'

The post-Duff era was only three minutes old when the champions struck the front.
Tyreke Wilson found space on the left before putting in a cross that saw Mipo Odubeko get a touche that took the ball into the path of Wood at the back post, and he squeezed the ball past Stephen McMullan.

The madness continued five minutes later as Shels gifted their hosts an equalising goal.
McMullan's long clearance was touched back to Kameron Ledwidge but his header to stopper Conor Kearns fell short before Grant Horton nipped in between defender and keeper to finish to an empty net.

It took strong hands from Blues No 1 McMullan to deny the visitors from regaining the lead on 20 minutes.
Ali Coote cut through the centre before slipping the ball out left to his hitman Odubeko only for his stinging to be kept out.
And when Reds attacker Odubeko outmuscled Darragh Leahy on the right five minutes later, he released Wood into a one-on-one run with Jesse Dempsey.
And after the winger got the better of the battle, he could not beat McMullan, who saved at his near post.
A wind-assisted McMullan goal kick on 41 minutes almost bounced for Amond on 41 minutes but keeper Kearns came out to collect just in front of the striker.
HALF-TIME TURNAROUND
An incredible start to the first-half was bettered by a kamikaze start to the second. Within three minutes, the champions were the cause of their own downfall again as they fell behind.
Paddy Barrett got his clearance all wrong and Conan Noonan's effort was parried by Kearns but striker Amond was on hand to finish the rebound from close range.
Sixty seconds later though, interim chief O'Brien was celebrating after Mark Coyle made a lung-bursting run towards goal.
He then sprayed the ball out for Ali Coote who put in a teasing delivery and Wood was on hand to touch home.
There was even time for more drama in the seventh added minute of five added on as the impressive Wood burst from midfield to slip the ball out wide right for Kelly — who let fly with a thunderous strike.
But his effort came crashing back off the bar with McMullan beaten.

Garry Ringrose hoping Marvel cameo can put him Test picture
While Garry Ringrose got 63 minutes under his belt in the British and Irish Lions' 24-19 win against the First Nations and Pasifika XV, it was perhaps more than he, and Andy Farrell had bargained for. Ringrose missed the first Test win against the Wallabies on Saturday due to concussion, but having come through the return to play protocols, he took his place in the matchday squad in Melbourne today, for what would have been an ideal tune-up ahead of Saturday's second Test at the MCG. Attempting to read between the lines, the fact he was named on the bench rather than the starting XV looked like a nod towards a short cameo at Marvel Stadium, and possibly a route back into the Test side. Alas, an early injury for Darcy Graham on his Lions debut saw the Ireland international (below) togged out and ready to go, playing more than an hour, and impressing despite the Lions' clunky overall display. "Any chance to represent the Lions, I've got to pinch myself," he said, following the five-point win. "It's something I would have dreamed of and everyone in their dreams of doing so to get a chance to be out on the pitch was brilliant." The 30-year-old had arguably been the standout player in the warm-up fixtures before picking up a concussion late in the win against the Brumbies a fortnight ago. Scotland's Huw Jones started ahead of Ringrose last weekend in Brisbane, and while the Ireland international is hoping he's done enough to earn a second Test call, he's prepared to row in behind whatever selection is made. "It's the team first. Wherever I fit in to help the team win, I'll be all in on that. "Yeah, happy out with the win today and then it's kind of a cool challenge in that it's a Test game in a few days and it's all hands on deck from tomorrow morning really. "Everyone is there for the team and I've been lucky enough to work with Faz [Andy Farrell] and a couple of coaches for so long that I've just complete trust in their decision making and back whatever it is and wherever my role fits in, then as I say, go all in on that. "It's the nature of the beast. If you weren't dealing with that little battle there's some other little battle that one's dealing with and everyone has their own story that they're trying to do themselves proud for their teammates, and family, so we're all in the same boat in that regard." If Ringrose does start on Saturday, then it could potentially be a change of both centres. The Irish pair of Ringrose and Aki have been preferred as a unit, as has the Jones and Sione Tuipulotu partnership. And having come up against the Scottish pair often, both with Leinster and Ireland, Ringrose has gained a new appreciation for how they work in tandem. "To work with Sione and Huw, and Bundee as well is brilliant. "At the start of the campaign, we'd challenge ourselves to be really open and honest with each other and try to get the best out of all of us. Whoever's out there on the day is representing the whole centre group. So whatever combination it is, there's a standard expected to deliver on so that nothing changes for this week. "Without being too clever, what has impressed me most [about Jones and Tuipulotu] is their skill at the line. What is expected of centres is to be able to carry when it's tight, play through the line when it's on, then pull the trigger if the space is out wide. Those two are exceptional at that. "It's been brilliant training against them, training with them, picking their brains on decision-making based on what they see. "From playing against Scotland and watching them play for Glasgow, it's unreal to actually work with them and have those conversations. They've been brilliant from that perspective, so I've definitely learned off them and still learning off them in every meeting. "They've unbelievably intelligent, skilful, physical, and really both of them are all-court in what they do."

O'Brien summons underdog energy as Shels face Qarabag challenge
Joey O'Brien has summoned the underdog feat of Tipperary's hurlers as a motivation for Shelbourne to topple Qarabag in the Champions League. The Azeri champions are European aficionados, seeing no reason, including the opposition of the Irish champions, to prevent them participating in group stages of competition for the 12th season in a row. Over the past decade, they've faced Chelsea, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Ajax, Sevilla, Atlético Madrid and Inter Milan on the European stage. Of most recent memory was their 2024 clash against Bayer Leverkusen. Xabi Alonso squeezed his team through the last-16 tie 5-4 on aggregate in extra-time on their way to the Europa final. Qarabag manager Gurban Gurbanov was already accorded Azeri footballing royalty status before he assumed his current position in 2008. He played in the country's first-ever match in 1992 following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, going on to became their record goalscorer. Expectation accompanies him not only at home but on his travels. To illustrate the difference in records, Qarabag's Uefa coefficient has swelled to 32 whereas Shels only last week rose to 8.5 from three on account of their first-round victory over Linfield. The visitors hadn't even sampled the Champions League when Shels last featured in 2005. All the pointers gravitate towards the Reds slipping into the Europa League by the time next week's second leg in Baku finishes, rather than facing Macedonians Shkendija or Romanians outfit FCBS in the lucrative third round. O'Brien isn't contemplating that consolation prize, adamant the tie is there to be captured with the aid of a pacey start before a sold-out Tolka Park. 'Irish people in general love being underdogs, don't they?,' said the former Ireland defender with a smile, before referencing Sunday's All-Ireland decider in which Cork were hot favourites. 'I was watching the hurling there at the weekend and it was the underdogs who won it. That is the way we are looking at this tie. "The big thing for me is having no regrets after European games like this. This is a moment in a player's career to go out and really embrace it. 'This is our home game so it's on us to get the atmosphere going, get on the front foot and go after them. 'The way I want my team to attack is by showing our personality and quality.' That plan is certain to be determined by the attitude adopted by the visitors. Unlike Shels, they are out of season, their sole preparation being a training camp in Austria. Throughout a cosmopolitan squad hardened by European experience. Captain Badavi Guseynov played both games against Ireland in the 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign, including the 1-1 draw in Dublin. O'Brien, who will replace injured goalkeeper Conor Kearns with Lorcan Healy despite the new signing of Dutch stopper Wessel Speel, has implored his players to prioritise the kudos over cash. Mark McNamee signs contract with Green Bay Packers
Mark McNamee has become the latest Irish recruit in the NFL after the kicker signed for the Green Bay Packers. McNamee, a former Ballyboden St Enda's goalkeeper, was included in this year's International Player Pathway Program and subsequently joined Canadian Football League franchise BC Lions. He played two pre-season games for the Vancouver-based franchise but was released last month. The 25-year old was tonight signed by the Packers as their back-up kicker and International Player Pathway Program player, with Australian Alex Hales departing. McNamee becomes the second Irish player on the Packers roster, alongside Wicklow-born punter Daniel Whelan. Former Down goalkeeper Charlie Smyth is another noted graduate of the IPPP, having earned a contract with the New Orleans Saints in 2024.
