Swiss Bencic through to her first Wimbledon semis
LONDON : Switzerland's Belinda Bencic won two tiebreaks to beat Russian seventh seed Mirra Andreeva 7-6(3), 7-6(2) today and reach the Wimbledon semi-finals for the first time.
The only mother left in the singles draw smashed her first of four match points to win the second tie-break of the contest and become her country's first women's semi-finalist since Martina Hingis in 1998.
Poland's five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek now stands between her and a place in the final.
Andreeva, 18, fired four aces in the opening set to none for Bencic and there was next to nothing between the pair until the Russian netted a couple of forehands in the tie-break.
Bencic had two break points at 4-4 in the second set, Andreeva saving one and then hitting long to go 5-4 down and leaving the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion to serve for a place in the last four.
Andreeva refused to follow the script, however, and broke straight back to 5-5 before going to 6-5 with 28-year-old Bencic then serving to take the match to another tie-break.

BERN (Switzerland), July 12 — Italy reached the quarter-finals of Women's Euro 2025 yesterday despite losing 3-1 to Group B winners Spain, the Azzurre finishing ahead of rivals Portugal whose tournament ended with a dramatic 2-1 defeat to Belgium. Athenea, Patri Guijarro and Esther Gonzalez scored the goals in Bern for Spain who finished the group stage on a perfect nine points, five ahead of second-placed Italy who will face Norway in the last eight on Wednesday. 'We can still develop and there is a gap between us and Spain, but you saw that with good organisation we can compete. 'Obviously they have really great players who regardless of how organised you are can mess everything up for you, but we're very happy to have qualified.' Spain meanwhile will take on hosts Switzerland in a week's time as they aim to follow up their World Cup win with a first-ever Euros triumph. Montse Tome's team scored 14 times in three group matches, just four fewer goals they scored in Australia and New Zealand two years ago. 'We will make the most of the time, adapt so that the players have time to rest physically and mentally, and also have some fun,' said Tome. 'I hope we manage to keep doing what we are doing because we won three games from three, and it's the first time Spain have done this.' But Spain were deservedly in front three minutes after the break through Patri whose sliced first-time finish crept past Italy goalkeeper Laura Giulinani. Spain poured forward and added a third in stoppage time through Esther Gonzalez. But it mattered little by that point as even though Telma Encarnacao levelled late for Portugal, Cayman lashed home a loose ball in the 96th minute to give Belgium a thrilling win after they had two goals chalked off by VAR. Formula E and FIA set for long-term contract extension
FIA president Mohammed Ahmad Sultan Ben Sulayem (left) said the Formula E contract was done. LONDON : Formula E is set to extend an exclusive deal with motorsport's world governing body that will ensure it remains the only all-electric racing series sanctioned by the FIA for decades to come. Formula E, majority owned since last year by telecoms company Liberty Global, started out in 2014 with a 25-year licence. FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem let slip to reporters during last weekend's British Formula One Grand Prix that an extension to the Formula E contract was done and 'would come up soon'. Formula E chief executive Jeff Dodds told Reuters on Friday ahead of the season's penultimate round in Berlin that there was nothing official. He said, however, to expect various announcements at the London season-ender this month. Formula One is starting a new engine era next year with a 50/50 split between combustion and electric but Ben Sulayem has said the Liberty Media-owned sport could go back to noisy V8 engines by 2029. 'If they (F1) choose to keep using it (the 2026 engine), we'll choose to keep talking about the fact that they like the (electric) technology so much they integrate it into their race cars,' said Dodds. 'If they choose to go back to V8s, then we would absolutely leverage the fact that we would then be the only electric championship and everything that that means.' McLaren exit Formula E is likely to be reduced to 10 teams, from 11 at present, next season after the withdrawal of Formula One champions McLaren to focus on endurance racing. McLaren had sought a new owner for the team, but Dodds said the time frame was too tight for interested parties and it would revert to Formula E, barring a late twist. 'As it stands unless something changes, and I never say never in Formula E or motorsport, their last race would be London,' he added. 'The team slot would vacate, which means the licence would revert to us, and then we have a lot of other interest in joining the championship. 'The chance of somebody joining for one year of Gen3 is unlikely but the chance of somebody coming in and starting to develop with a future coming in for Gen4 is much more likely.' Formula E will be in the last year of its Gen3 era next season, with the more powerful and faster Gen4 car then coming in for 2026/27. Nissan's British driver Oliver Rowland can clinch the 2024-25 championship in the Berlin double-header this weekend, and would be the series' 10th different champion in 11 seasons.

Newcastle splash £52m on Forest winger Anthony Elanga ahead of Champions League return
NEWCASTLE, July 12 — Newcastle yesterday announced the signing of Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga for a reported fee of £52 million (RM297 million). The 23-year-old Sweden international has signed a long-term deal with Eddie Howe's team, who are preparing to return to the Champions League after a fifth-placed finish last season. The fee is worth up to £55 million including £3 million in performance-related add-ons, reports said. 'I'm delighted to welcome Anthony to Newcastle,' said Howe. 'He has been a key target for us so I'm delighted to secure him at this early part of pre-season. 'He is an exciting talent with attributes that make him a unique attacking threat. His pace, energy and ability to create and score goals will strengthen us and complement the way we want to play.' Elanga, who began his professional career at Manchester United, was one of the stars of Forest's surprise seventh-placed finish in the Premier League last season, scoring six goals and providing 11 assists. Forest paid just £15 million to sign him from United in 2023. 'I'm excited, I'm really happy but most importantly I'm ready,' he said.
