AMC's 50% discounts are here. Will it help revive the movie industry?
AMC is trying to change that with 50% ticket discounts on Tuesdays, the most popular moviegoing day, as well as on Wednesdays.
AMC CEO Adam Aron cited 'overwhelmingly positive guest response' for expanding the 50% discount to Tuesday tickets in a press release.
'A lot of theaters have seen the positive impact of instituting a weekly discount day. And right now, it's very telling to see the No. 1 chain in the country and in the world institute a second one,' Daniel Loria, editorial director at BoxOffice Pro, told CNN, adding that other chains could follow suit to attract customers.
A monthly streaming subscription can cost as low as $7.99 — far less than a $25 premium screening in New York or Los Angeles.
But for consumers, the decision still comes down to the price of a movie compared with other outings, said Loria.
Going to the movies can be cheaper and easier than attending sports events, an amusement park or a concert. At the extreme end, prices for those kinds of events can even run into the thousands.
But consumers still care about the increased cost of going to theaters compared to staying at home, according to Jackie Brenneman, founding partner of cinema industry consultancy The Fithian Group. Expanding discounts could dispel the notion that paying for a movie ticket isn't worth the money and effort, but theaters' pricing is a secondary incentive, and theaters need more dynamic offerings, she added.
While ticket sales are an important source of revenue, theaters also make money come from subscription programs, concessions and merchandise.
Subscription models, such as allowing moviegoers to watch a set number of movies per week for a monthly cost, are one way theaters have tried combating streaming services without pricing out consistent moviegoers.
At AMC, for instance, an A-List subscriber can watch four movies a week by paying $25.99 a month. Regal Cinemas, the No. 2 US movie chain, offers a similar model, Regal Unlimited, with a base plan of $21.49 each month for an unlimited movie pass and a 10% discount on concessions, among other benefits.
Theaters have also hopped on a trend of unveiling pricey special edition popcorn buckets and franchise-specific merchandise.
Some merchandise doesn't land well with audiences, warned Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory.
'But all of this, viewed as a whole, is just broadening what the moviegoing experience is to a customer when they buy a ticket,' he said.
Meanwhile, Hollywood continues to churn out big-budget films that moviegoers could prefer to see in theaters rather than on a flatscreen, computer, tablet or smartphone.
'Consumers are going more often to bigger blockbusters, and they're watching them on the most premium format available. So they are actively choosing the most expensive ticket price out there,' Brenneman said.
There are far fewer movie screens today than there were before the pandemic, when attendance dropped off a cliff. In 2024, there were roughly 35,481 cinema screens, a 9% decline from 2022 and a 13.8% decline from 2019, according to data provided by research firm Omdia.
There have been signs of a rebound, as the overall box office has seen gain after studios have shifted from the 'streaming exclusive' mentality, says Loria. A slow first quarter due to some underperforming movies was countered by a strong second quarter and a record-breaking Memorial Day weekend for Hollywood.
According to Comscore data, the box office is up 15% year-to-date versus 2024 due to the second quarter rebound. But earnings for 2025 are still down 24.1% compared with 2019.
Discounted tickets are one method to capitalize on that moviegoing momentum, providing a boost for theaters like AMC and struggling malls and shopping centers where theaters have served as destination points. A study by Beacon Economics estimates that for every dollar spent on movie nights, $1.50 is added to the economy.
The success of recent hits, like Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth' and Warner Bros. Pictures' 'Superman' could bolster upcoming releases, like Paramount Pictures' 'Smurfs' and Disney's 'Fantastic Four.'
Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN.
Robbins still believes that the summer box office could gross $4 billion — the second post-pandemic year to do so, following 2023.
'There's no perfect balance, but I think (discounts) are positive steps toward that goal of being able to foster that big communal event, but still have these opportunities in the middle of the week when theaters are a little quieter,' Robbins said.

Hello! I'm Crystal, and you've landed on my weekly roundup of creepy, macabre, and horrible AF things I really wanted to share with like-minded folks (like you)! And if you looooove this kind of content, you should subscribe to my official That Got Dark newsletter to get your weekly dopamine fix of the macabre delivered RIGHT to your inbox! Now, fair warning, because this is a weekly newsletter, just know this article won't be formatted like your typical ~BuzzFeed style~ list. If you need to add a new fear in your life, I have the perfect one for you: being eaten alive by a sinkhole. In 2013, a man in Florida named Jeffrey Bush was 'swallowed alive' by a 17-foot-wide SINKHOLE that had formed under his bedroom in the middle of the night, while he was sleeping. And, yes, you read that right…UNDER. HIS. BEDROOM. Apparently, the floor collapsed beneath Jeffrey, and he fell down into the void along with a dresser, TV, and most of his bed set. His brother, Jeremy, tried to save him, but said it was too late by the time he rushed in to help. Jeremy told reporters that all he could see was cable wire running from the TV down into the sinkhole, and a corner of Jeffrey's Bed. Jeffrey's body was NEVER recovered. And you'd be shocked at how many responses I get each time (or maybe not). This week's spotlight: Mack, Colorado 'Once we had to stop here for do this! Real The Hills Have Eyes vibes. We immediately turned around because of the bad vibes, but got stuck by a passing train. When we returned, a woman, rail-thin with missing teeth, yelled, 'Fill up, I'll open up!' So I started getting gas and noticed the 1980s-style pump had a piece of tape tripping the price. I go past the foul garbage can with flies everywhere and open the door to a horror movie. To my right, a boy eating cereal at a table stops and stares desperately at me. All the store racks were covered with plastic, and dolls were hanging from the rafters. As the woman started yelling, 'You didn't fill up!' I noticed a paper saying, 'Where are you from?' I dropped a 20 to cover my gas. We drove off only to be stopped by the train again. Just as it cleared the road, I saw the woman with other devil's reject types running after the car. Luckily, we got out of there, so I can warn you all!" —Anonymous Related: Wikipedia is like the Wild West. It's vast, lawless, and sometimes you can find some extremely weird (and horrifying) things out there. This week's spotlight: The murder of Junko Furuta. Warning: This is an extremely graphic story. Junko Furuta was a Japanese high school student who was abducted, raped, tortured, and then subsequently murdered in 1989 by four teenage boys over the course of 44 days. Some of the horrific acts she was subjected to included being repeatedly burned, beaten, forced to drink her own urine, and set on fire. Her case was often referred to as the "concrete-encased high school girl murder case," because her body was discovered packed in concrete inside a dumped oil drum. The case became widely known not only due to the extremely graphic nature of the repeated beatings and sexual assaults she endured, but also the belief from the public that the perpetrators received lenient sentences. Bruce Lee — Died: July 20, 1973. Cause of Death: Cerebral edema (swelling of the brain). How he died: Lee died on July 20, 1973, at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong after being found unconscious on the floor of his apartment. He was 32 years old. Interestingly, at the time of his death, Lee had been in the process of working on a film called Game of Death. Because Lee had only shot roughly 40 minutes of footage before he died, the filmmakers opted to finish the film by using stand-ins, recycled scenes from some of his previous works, and even used real-life footage of Lee in his casket (as seen above) for a scene where the character in the film fakes his own death. Related: Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer (2021) What it's about: A four-part true‑crime documentary miniseries covering the terrifying 1984–85 murder spree of Richard Ramirez, infamously known as the 'Night Stalker.' Why you should watch it: This is from a few years ago, but if you missed it, I HIGHLY recommend you get on that. It's a deeply fascinating story told through the eyes of the detectives who actually chased Ramirez. Where you can watch it: Streaming for free on Netflix. David Alan Gore Gore was a serial killer who committed six brutal murders in Florida between 1981 and 1983. He was often accompanied by his cousin, Fred Waterfield, and together they were given the moniker the "Killing Cousins." They would abduct, rape, and murder women and teenage girls, often using Gore's position as an auxiliary sheriff's deputy to lure victims. Gore was arrested after a failed escape attempt by 17-year-old Lynn Elliott, whose murder led to his capture. He was executed by lethal injection in 2012 after spending 28 years on death row. His last meal: Fried chicken, French fries, and butter pecan ice cream. Well, I think it's time we shut it down for the week. In the next issue, I'll talk about a sleepwalking killer and the tragic story of a feral child that will scar you for life (so be sure to subscribe below)! 5 great Pedro Pascal movies to stream
Few actors have had a run quite like the one that Pedro Pascal is on right now. The actor, who rose to fame on Game of Thrones and has since become a dominant presence in both film and television, is starring in three movies this summer, including Fantastic Four: First Steps, Materialists, and Eddington. He's also coming off of the second season of The Last of Us, which means you've had just an insane number of opportunities to watch him on screen. If you're hungry for more, though, we've got you covered with five older movies from Pascal that are all available to stream now: Gladiator II (2024) Although Pascal is not the lead of Gladiator II, he plays a central role in the film as a Roman general who is secretly working to take down the corrupt emperors that he publicly serves. Here, Pascal gets a chance to play an upright hero, and it's a part he fills well. Recommended Videos He's a perfect counterpoint to Paul Mescal's more selfish Lucius, who spends most of the movie convinced that he's after personal vengeance. Although it can't live up to the original, Gladiator II is boosted by Pascal's presence. You can watch Gladiator II on Paramount Plus. The Wild Robot (2023) If there's a running theme on this list, Pascal is always more than willing to play second fiddle. Here, he's doing it in a vocal performance, playing the closest animal companion of the titular robot, a conniving fox who ultimately partners with her to raise a runty goose. The Wild Robot is Lupita Nyong'o's show, but Pascal is both funny and moving as a fox who keeps having to convince himself that he doesn't actually care about anything besides himself. You can watch The Wild Robot on Netflix. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022) There's a little too much going on in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, but every scene that Pascal and Nicolas Cage share together is golden. The film follows Cage as he's recruited to infiltrate the compound of one of his biggest fans, who also happens to be the head of a criminal empire. Pascal plays the head of that empire and spends most of the movie telling Cage how much he loves his movies. It's a hilarious, utterly winning performance that has to be charming enough to convince Cage that this guy might not be so bad after all. You can watch The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent on Amazon Prime Video. Triple Frontier (2019) One of the great dudes-rock movies of the past decade, Triple Frontier tells the story of a group of former special operations operatives who reunite to plan a master heist after finding that their home lives are at a dead end. As they undertake the mission, things don't go according to plan, leading to predictably terrible results. Pascal is just one member of a crew that also includes Oscar Isaac and Ben Affleck, but he stands out as an actor with an incredible amount of natural presence. You can watch Triple Frontier on Netflix. If Beale Street Could Talk (2018) Pascal only has a single scene in Barry Jenkins' If Beale Street Could Talk, but it's one of the best scenes in an incredible movie. The movie focuses on a Black woman who is dealing with the aftermath of her partner's arrest even while preparing for the arrival of their first child. Pascal shares his scene with Regina King, who plays the main character's mother. As she goes to him to plead for help for her son-in-law, they share an intimate, heartbreaking exchange that reveals the depths to which Pascal can go, even with limited screen time. You can watch If Beale Street Could Talk on Plex.

The U.S. Economy Is Regaining Its Swagger
When President Trump slapped tariffs on nations across the globe this spring, many economists feared higher prices and spending cuts would flatten the economy. Consumer sentiment collapsed. The S&P 500 stock index fell by 19% between February and April. The world held its breath and waited for the bottom to drop out.
