
AI-based SMoSS to control mosquito menace soon
Named the Smart Mosquito Surveillance System (SMoSS), the programme aims to drastically reduce the spread of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, and chikungunya. The first phase is set to be implemented from this month.
Launched by the Municipal Administration and Urban Development (MAUD) Department, the SMoSS will be implemented in a phased manner. In the first phase, it will cover 66 locations across six major municipal corporations: 16 in Greater Visakhapatnam, 28 in Vijayawada, seven in Nellore, six in Kurnool, five in Rajamahendravaram, and four in Kakinada. This follows the successful implementation of a pilot project in selected wards of a few municipalities earlier.
The system uses AI-powered smart sensors that can detect mosquito species, gender, population density in mosquito-prone zones. These sensors will automatically issue alerts when mosquito density exceeds threshold levels, enabling authorities to respond with precision and speed.
Speaking to TNIE, Principal Secretary, MAUD, S Suresh Kumar, said 'This initiative marks a shift from blind spraying to targeted, evidence-based mosquito control. The IoT sensors will allow us to detect density levels and act accordingly, ensuring better results with fewer resources. The highly capable sensors will be installed at identified hotspots. They will detect the number of mosquitoes, their type, sex, and other relevant details. The data collected through IoT will be integrated and analysed to alert both the municipalities and the public,' said Suresh Kumar.

The artificial intelligence-powered smart mosquito surveillance system (SMoSS) would be launched on a pilot basis at 66 locations in six major municipal corporations in the state. SMoSS will primarily safeguard public health by curbing the dreaded mosquito menace, besides reducing operational burden on civic staff and helping in cutting costs of urban local bodies. The programme will be closely and monitored with the help of internet-of-things like drones, sensors, heat maps, and traps. "We will launch the pilot project at 16 locations in Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation, four in Kakinada, five in Rajamahendravaram, 28 in Vijayawada, seven in Nellore, and six in Kurnool," said P Sampath Kumar, director of municipal administration. SMoSS will trigger automatic alerts when mosquito density crosses a threshold level in any particular area. Data thus generated will be continuously streamed to a central server and visualized on a real-time dashboard. "This will enable close monitoring and ensure prompt fumigation in the affected areas in a data-driven approach for effective control of mosquitoes instead of the present 'blind spraying' process that has little impact. The IoT sensors will monitor mosquito density and guide the targeted activity," explained Sampath Kumar. Use of drones for spraying the larvicide would result in an efficient application by covering large areas with less chemical use, time and also cost. Evidence-based spraying, prevention of chemical overuse and promotion of public health safety are the key elements in the whole operation. "We plan to outsource the operations completely to specialized agencies and payment will be result-oriented by fixing operational accountability. Complaints, if any, from the citizens and field-level functionaries will be tracked via mobile applications (Vector Control and Puramitra)," said principal secretary Suresh Kumar.

Under the upcoming system, sensors and timers will automatically calculate the daily duration of sunlight based on location and operate the lights only when needed. The dashboard will record illumination required versus what was actually provided, allowing officials to assess lighting coverage across the full stretch without physical checks, said a senior NHAI official. NHAI will use IoT data to track movement of ambulances, patrol vehicles, and recovery cranes. The system logs how quickly these services respond to accidents and flags delays or failures in deployment. Geo-fencing will ensure patrol vehicles stay within designated zones; any breach will prompt alerts and contractor accountability, the official said. However, frequent commuters remain unconvinced. "While technology is fine, the highway still lacks basic safety features. Road markings have faded, and accident-prone spots are left unattended," said G Ganesh of Sngaperumalkoil.
