BRICS Finance Ministers express
In a joint statement following their first meeting under Brazil's chairmanship on Saturday, the group emphasised the resilience of the BRICS nations--Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa--along with new members in the face of these challenges and pledged to safeguard a non-discriminatory, open, fair, inclusive, equitable, and rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO at its core, underscoring a collective commitment to global economic stability.
'The global economy and financial markets have increasingly been subject to elevated uncertainty and bouts of intense volatility. We voiced our serious concerns with the unilateral imposition of trade- and finance-related actions, including the raising of tariffs and non-tariff measures, which distort trade and are inconsistent with World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules,' the statement read.
'In this testing environment, BRICS members have demonstrated resilience and will continue to cooperate among themselves and with other countries to avoid trade wars that could plunge the global economy into recession or further prolong subdued growth,' it added.
The statement comes amidst a challenging global economic context marked by heightened uncertainty and volatility, as the deadline date of the 90-day pause on tariff escalations announced by US President Donald Trump approaches, after this initial announcement of these punitive measures on April 2. The deadline date is set to be on July 9.
Under current inflationary conditions, the ministers reaffirmed their dedication to central banks' price stability mandates, confident that responsible monetary policies benefit all stakeholders. 'Collectively, we will continue to pursue constructive and active engagement in international financial institutions and a rules-based multilateral trading system to meet the needs of developing countries and advance intra-BRICS cooperation to further the development and resilience of our economies,' they stated.
The statement also addressed the need to de-escalate trade tensions, promote balanced global growth, and foster inclusive economic globalisation.
'We will cooperate to facilitate the de-escalation of trade tensions, including by reinforcing solidarity and promoting strong, sustainable, and more balanced global growth, fostering a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalisation,' it noted.
Additionally, the BRICS nations committed to enhancing coordination between debtors and creditors to address debt issues in Emerging Markets and Developing Economies (EMDEs) from a development perspective, ensuring fair and constructive solutions.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on his four-day visit to Brazil, during which he will participate in the 17th BRICS Summit and undertake a State Visit.
During the 17th BRICS Leaders' Summit from July 6 to July 7, PM Modi will exchange views on key global issues, including peace and security, strengthening multilateralism, responsible use of artificial intelligence, climate action, global health, and economic and financial matters.
According to the official statement, the Prime Minister is also likely to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Summit. (ANI)

"Two-thirds of humanity has not been adequately represented in the global institutions formed in the 20th century. Countries that have a major contribution to today's global economy have not been given a place at the decision-making table. This is not just a question of representation but also of credibility and effectiveness. Without the Global South, these institutions seem like a mobile with a SIM card but no network. These institutions are unable to deal with the challenges of the 21st century. Whether it is the ongoing conflicts in different parts of the world, the pandemic, the economic crisis, or newly emerging challenges in cyber and space, these institutions have no solutions," he stated. PM Modi's address called for a radical overhaul, not merely symbolic changes, but tangible reforms in governance structures, voting rights, and leadership positions, calling for a "multipolar and inclusive world order," advocating for a paradigm shift in how global institutions operate. "Today the world needs a new multipolar and inclusive world order. This will have to start with comprehensive reforms in global institutions. Reforms should not be merely symbolic, but their real impact should also be visible. There should be changes in governance structures, voting rights and leadership positions. The challenges of the countries of the Global South should be given priority in policy-making," the PM noted. The Prime Minister also drew a parallel to technological obsolescence, noting, "In the age of AI, where technology is updated every week, it is not acceptable for a global institution not to be updated even once in eighty years. 21st-century software cannot be run on 20th-century typewriters." This metaphor underscored the urgency of modernising institutions like the UN Security Council, WTO, and Multilateral Development Banks to reflect contemporary realities and address emerging challenges effectively. The Prime Minister also highlighted the expansion of BRICS as a model for adaptability and reform, welcoming Indonesia's recent inclusion and acknowledging the bloc's evolving role. "The expansion of BRICS, the joining of new friends, is proof that BRICS is an organisation that has the ability to change itself according to time. Now we will have to show the same willpower for reforms in institutions like the UN Security Council, WTO, and Multilateral Development Banks... On behalf of India, I extend my heartiest congratulations and best wishes to my friend, President Prabowo, on Indonesia joining the BRICS family," he said. Expressing India's commitment to global welfare, PM Modi stated, "India has always considered it its responsibility to work in the interest of humanity, rising above its interests. 'We express strong condemnation of any acts of terrorism as criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, whenever, wherever and by whomsoever committed. We condemn in the strongest terms the terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir on 22 April 2025, during which 26 people were killed and many more injured. We reaffirm our commitment to combating terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the cross-border movement of terrorists, terrorism financing and safe havens," the joint declaration read. The BRICS leaders also called for those responsible for the terror attack to be held accountable and brought to justice. 'We reiterate that terrorism should not be associated with any religion, nationality, civilization or ethnic group and that all those involved in terrorist activities and their support must be held accountable and brought to justice in accordance with relevant national and international law. We urge to ensure zero tolerance for terrorism and reject double standards in countering terrorism," the declaration added. 'We look forward to further deepening counter-terrorism cooperation. We call for an expeditious finalization and adoption of the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism in the UN framework. We call for concerted actions against all UN designated terrorists and terrorist entities," it added. Without taking names, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday called out western hypocrisy and said condemning terrorism should not simply be a 'convenience" but a matter of 'principle". 'Condemning terrorism should be our principle, not just a convenience. If we first see in which country the attack took place, against whom, then it would be a betrayal against humanity," Modi said during his speech at the session for 'Peace and security and reform of global governance'. 'Friends, there should be no hesitation in imposing sanctions against terrorists. Victims and supporters of terrorism cannot be weighed on the same scale. For personal or political gain, giving silent consent to terrorism, supporting terror or terrorists, should not be acceptable under any circumstances. There should be no difference between words and actions regarding terrorism. If we cannot do this, then the question naturally arises whether we are serious about the fight against terrorism or not," he said. 17th BRICS Summit The summit, hosted by Brazil from 6 to 7 July, focused on key global issues ranging from multilateralism and artificial intelligence to climate action, peace and security, and economic resilience. BRICS, originally formed by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, expanded in 2010 with the inclusion of South Africa. In a major development in 2024, the group extended membership to six additional countries: Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Pahalgam Terror Attack In one of the biggest attacks in Jammu and Kashmir, Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists in Pahalgam on Tuesday, April 22, killing at least 26 people, including foreign tourists, and injuring many others. The Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, claimed responsibility for the attack, although it later backtracked after massive global outrage. India responded with Operation Sindoor on May 7, bombing nine terrorist camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in pre-dawn strikes that killed at least 100 militants. The Texas flash floods have severely hit Kerr County Kerr County is located on the Edwards Plateau, and was named after congressman James Kerr, who was a public servant in Texas during the 19th century. The flash floods began during Independence Day weekend, and Kerr County has borne the brunt of the lives lost in this natural disaster. In the wake of the floods, Kerrville mayor Don Herring Jr spoke to the press and said that the city council's goal was to save whoever they possibly could. Furthermore, city manager Dalton Rice warned individual residents from taking matters into their own hands by flying their personal drones over the disaster-ravaged areas.
