The Brief
A Disney Parks leader says he isn't worried about Universal Orlando's new Epic Universe theme park reducing traffic to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando. He believes the opening of the rival destination will help boost attendance.
In the first three months of 2025, revenue in Disney's Experiences segment rose 6% to $8.89 billion.
Epic Universe is set to open on May 22, 2025.
ORLANDO, Fla. - Disney Parks Chief Josh D'Amaro says he isn't worried about Universal Orlando's new Epic Universe theme park reducing traffic to Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando — in fact, he thinks the opening of the rival destination will help boost attendance.
What they're saying
D'Amaro spoke about Epic Universe on Wednesday at the MoffettNathanson Media, Internet & Communications Conference.
D'Amaro said Disney has only scratched the surface when it comes to stories the theme park giant can share. He noted that Disney has yet to build attractions based on popular films like "Coco" and "Black Panther."
"We're always on the offensive," he said. "We're constantly investing for the long term, fortifying each one of our theme parks. … If something is built new in Central Florida, like Epic Universe … that tourist is going to have to visit the Magic Kingdom."
By the numbers
In 2023, Disney announced plans to boost capital spending in the Disney Experiences business to $60 billion over a 10-year period, nearly double compared with the previous decade.
In the first three months of 2025, revenue in Disney's Experiences segment rose 6% to $8.89 billion, according to a report from Variety. The segment includes theme parks, cruises, resorts and consumer products.
Variety reports the total segment operating profit was up 9%, to $2.49 billion, with a 13% growth in domestic parks and experiences and a 14% rise in consumer products offsetting a 23% decline in international theme parks.
For fiscal year 2025, Variety reports that Disney projected a 6%-8% growth in operating income for the theme park and consumer products business.
Big picture view
When speaking about Disney's successes and future plans, D'Amaro also brought up the new theme park in Abu Dhabi. The Abu Dhabi park will be the company's seventh theme park resort.
D'Amaro said the resort in Abu Dhabi will be "the most advanced and interactive destination in our portfolio" and the setting "will allow us to tell our stories in completely new ways."
The waterfront destination will blend Disney's iconic stories and characters with Abu Dhabi's culture, architecture and innovation. Disney will lead creative design and operations, while Miral, Abu Dhabi's leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences, will develop and build the resort. Once completed, the resort will feature Disney-themed attractions and entertainment, dining, and immersive storytelling experiences that reflect both Disney magic and Abu Dhabi culture.
D'Amaro said opening a new park is a once-in-a-decade decision.
"We knew there was demand for Disney products around the world," he said. "The team focused on the Middle East region and ultimately settled on Abu Dhabi. One-third of the world's population is within a four-hour flight radius of Abu Dhabi. This is a crossroads for the world."
Disney has not yet provided a timeline for the construction or opening target date for the new park.
The backstory
Epic Universe will be Universal's fourth theme park in Orlando – and the newest theme park to open in Florida. Epic Universe joins Universal's three other theme parks: Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure and Universal Volcano Bay.
Epic Universe will be home to five new lands, each with its own rides, attractions, shows, bars and restaurants.
The five immersive worlds are: Celestial Park, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Ministry of Magic, Super Nintendo World, How to Train Your Dragon - Isle of Berk and Dark Universe.
Universal Orlando states that Celestial Park is the "main portal" leading to the four other lands. It is inspired by "astronomical and mythological elements," which "create imaginative sensory delights."
The Ministry of Magic is the third installment of the wizard-themed lands that Universal Orlando has brought to life. Now, guests will be able to explore the wizarding streets of Paris in the 1920s, just like Newt Scamander™ from Fantastic Beasts, and check out the British Ministry of Magic in the 1990s alongside Harry, Ron and Hermione.
Super Nintendo World can be best described as stepping into any Super Nintendo game. Guests can expect to be fully immersed in this land!
Based on the Academy Award-nominated film trilogy, "How to Train your Dragon," this land has something for the whole family.
Guests will step into the rugged and rocky land where vikings and dragons live together in harmony!
Dark Universe is the grim and mythical world that will allow guests to explore the mystery of monsters! The village is full of creatures and experiments from Dr. Victoria Frankenstein.
Epic is also home to three hotels: Universal Helios Grand Hotel, Universal's Terra Luna Resort and its sister property, Universal's Stella Nova Resort.
Epic Universe officially opens on May 22, 2025.

Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2'

Fans Just Spotted This Late Disney Star in Adam Sandler's 'Happy Gilmore 2' originally appeared on Parade. Happy Gilmore 2 just dropped on Netflix Friday, July 25, and it's already making headlines. The long-awaited sequel to Adam Sandler's 1996 classic brings back the golf comedy chaos, complete with cameos from Travis Kelce, Eminem, Post Malone, and Bad Bunny. But one blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment is hitting fans especially hard: a cameo from the late Cameron Boyce. In one scene, a character working the check-in booth has a TV playing in the background. If you look closely, you'll catch the Disney Channel alum in the lower right corner—wearing a blue shirt and holding binoculars. Eagle-eyed fans quickly recognized the footage as a clip from Jessie, likely the episode where Boyce's character, Luke, breaks his leg and spends his time spying on the neighbors. The reactions rolled in fast. 'Happy Gilmore 2 was great. The honoring of Cameron Boyce was such a cute and awesome Easter egg. Bottom right of the screen they're watching them on TV. Adam Sandler you killed it,' one person posted on X (formerly Twitter). 'WHEN I SAW THAT I GASPED SO LOUD MY DOG LOOKED CONCERNED,' another quipped. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 'I wasn't going to watch happy gilmore 2 but finding out about the nod to cameron boyce had made me so emotional I just might,' chimed in a third. 'It actually makes me so heartbroken to think about what an amazingly talented and kind soul the world lost when he passed,' someone else said. 'IM SOBBING I COMPLETELY MISSED THIS,' added another. The moment may be subtle, but it wasn't the first time the 58-year-old 50 First Dates actor honored Boyce. The two worked together on the Grown Ups franchise, where Boyce played Sandler's on-screen son. After Boyce died in 2019 from an epileptic seizure at just 20 years old, Sandler paid tribute to him in Hubie Halloween, with a photo and message in the credits: 'Gone way too soon and one of the kindest, coolest, funniest, and most talented kids we knew. You live on forever in our hearts and are truly missed every day.' Boyce's Descendants co-stars and collaborators continue to keep his memory alive, too. On what would've been his 26th birthday in May, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Booboo Stewart all posted tributes. 'i still feel you all the time. catch you in the next life. happy birthday. i love you,' Cameron, 29, shared alongside throwback photos and a close-up of her tattoo honoring him. 'Keep dancing in heaven, my Cam. Earth could never be the same without you,' Carson, 32, wrote. 'Our Angel. Our Sunshine. Our Cam.' Stewart, 31, posted a photo of the two drinking milkshakes on his Instagram Story, writing, 'Love you always, happy birthday @thecameronboyce.' Director Kenny Ortega also remembered him on Instagram, writing, 'You are love, light and forever with us.' Boyce was honored again in 2024's Descendants: The Rise of Red, where his character Carlos appears in a framed portrait and is referenced by name. China Anne McClain's character Uma looks at the photo and says, 'It's what Carlos would have wanted... Do it in honor of him.' That makes Happy Gilmore 2 the latest to pay tribute—and fans are taking note. While Sandler hasn't confirmed the moment, it lines up with his track record of honoring the people he's loved and worked with. And this small gesture? If NFL, ESPN deal is done soon, it will have an immediate impact on how fans consume the most popular sport in the US

Per CNBC, the league is expected to take a 10 percent stake in Disney-owned ESPN, while ESPN would have ownership of NFL Network — including its seven live games per season — and Red Zone. Some other NFL Media properties also may be part of the package, though NFL Films is not expected to be one. The benefits for ESPN are obvious and enormous. ESPN is launching a much-anticipated standalone app in the fall, with the hopes it will revive the network's pre-streaming status as 'The Worldwide Leader in Sports.' Having more NFL content will be nothing short of a gold mine for the direct-to-consumer app, which will cost $29.99 per month. And with the NFL holding a stake in ESPN, it essentially makes the network, as Puck's John Ourand put it, 'a forever partner' with the league, and legitimate security when broadcast and streaming rights are up for bid again. Advertisement The benefits for the NFL? The league has been looking for years to find a way to offload or share its in-house media properties, and there's no better partner than ESPN and its parent company, Disney. From a journalistic standpoint, it's fair to wonder whether the NFL believes there is a side benefit to the deal — the possibility of limiting certain critical reporting on the league, which ESPN has done exceptionally well. Advertisement How this partnership would fully affect you and me won't be totally clear until the deal is complete and the parameters are revealed. But the baseline is this: Much of what you currently enjoy watching on the NFL Network — which will still exist in 24/7 form — will be under the purview of ESPN. And you're probably going to have to pony up for one more pricey streaming service if you want to keep watching all of it. This really is fake news One of the many, many, many scourges of social media — particularly the swamplands of Facebook — is AI-generated content. The vast majority of posts about a pop-culture or sports topic or personality is AI-generated at this point. Some of it seems real. All of it is trash. A more recent trend is phony but believable stories about an athlete doing an extremely good deed. The Sports Hub's Scott Zolak got duped by one recently, passing along on his afternoon show that Patriots quarterback Drake Maye and his wife donated all of the gifts from their recent wedding to local homeless shelters and children's charities. It was the kind of story you want to believe, and plausible to some degree. It also wasn't true. It was a lie concocted and spread by a social media content farm. Advertisement Zolak isn't alone. On Thursday, I noticed a longtime prominent NBA media member share a post on the social media platform Threads that Lions quarterback Jared Goff donated — let's get this concoction right — 'his entire $15.9 million bonus and sponsorship earns to a homeless shelter in Detroit to help fund 150 units [of] housing with 300 shelter beds.' That was followed by a fake Goff quote about seeing homelessness firsthand growing up. Listen, if actual media people can't spot a phony story, it's understandable — if disheartening beyond belief — why so much of this sludge is treated as truth by so many. A word of advice: if a story that seems too good to be true (or, on the opposite end, too scandalous), it probably is. Always check to make sure it is something that has been initially reported by a credible journalist. Preferably with a link to an actual story. Please don't tell me that's too much to ask. Boring or a booming British? Reader Pete G. reached out this week to ask whether Scottie Scheffler's systematic dominance on the PGA Tour, combined with a nature that is somewhat less charismatic than Tiger Woods's in his heyday, has led to a decrease in viewership in the anti-climactic final rounds. 'Watching the 4th round [of the British Open] was so boring and uninteresting,' he wrote. 'He is annoyingly steady and he never ( gives up a lead when he is in the driver's seat.' All true. But golf viewers seem to be digging it, at least according to the viewership numbers from Sunday's final round on NBC. Nielsen reported 4.1 million viewers for the fourth round, which was up 21 percent from the final round of Xander Schauffele's victory a year ago. Even without much suspense — Scheffler finished at 17 under par to win by four strokes — golf fans stuck around to watch him complete his fourth major victory and second this year. Advertisement McAfee apologizes — five months later Sentient monster truck Pat McAfee apologized Wednesday on his eponymous ESPN show to a female Ole Miss student, a mere five months after carelessly amplifying a false rumor that sent her life into chaos. McAfee being McAfee, he did it in the most self-aggrandizing way possible, including deploying the phrase/shield, 'As a girl dad,'' which is almost always followed by an apology for some behavior that humiliated a woman. 'Girl dads' fear lawsuits too, I'd imagine. "As a Girl Dad, I was very thankful for the opportunity to let Mr. Cornett know that I was wildly regretful for the part that our show played in his daughter, Mary Kate's, pain." - Pat McAfee apologizing for sharing a false rumor about an 18-year-old Ole Miss student on his show. — Awful Announcing (@awfulannouncing) Chad Finn can be reached at

Box Office: ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps' Clobbers $57 Million Opening Day — Second-Biggest of the Year

'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' stretched its arms around $57 million from 4,125 theaters across Friday and preview screenings. Per Disney's numbers, that's the second-biggest opening day of the calendar year, ranking just behind 'A Minecraft Movie' ($57.11 million). The film is playing Imax and other premium large format auditoriums. It also just edges out Marvel Studios' comic book banner rival, DC Studios' 'Superman,' which began with a $56.1 million opening day just two weeks ago. It'll be a close call on whether 'Fantastic Four' can keep pacing ahead to beat the $125 million three-day opening of 'Superman.' More from Variety 'Fantastic Four' Credits Scene Confirms Franklin Richards' Role in 'Avengers: Doomsday,' but It's a Big Risk Pedro Pascal Downplays Reed Richards Becoming the New Leader of the Avengers in 'Doomsday': 'That's a Little Bit of a Mislead' Box Office: 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' Makes $24.4 Million in Previews, Beating 'Superman' for Biggest of 2025 It's the best first day kick-off for a Marvel Cinematic Universe entry since 'Deadpool & Wolverine' dominated the box office 12 months ago. And like that R-rated smash, 'Fantastic Four' is based on Marvel characters that were acquired by Disney after the studio's acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, demonstrating some value to that $71 billion merger. Three previous big-budget 'Fantastic Four' entries were produced at Fox, from 2005 to 2015. (There was also an unreleased 1994 feature, spearheaded by Roger Corman as a means to retain film rights for German producers. It circulates among diehards.) With a story that has little connection to other Marvel Cinematic Universe entries, 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' has presented itself as a relatively fresh entry point to audiences. Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who lead the film as Marvel's first family, are all MCU newcomers. 'First Steps' also has the benefit of strong reviews and good audience sentiment (pollster Cinema Score turned in an 'A-' grade among ticketbuyers). At a production cost of $200 million, plus much more to market and distribute, the film will need to hold as one of the biggest grossers of the year to turn a profit in theaters. Marvel's two previous 2025 releases, 'Captain America: Brave New World' and 'Thunderbolts*,' launched to $88.5 million and $76 million respectively. Both ended up losing money theatrically. Disney hopes to gain some momentum with the Matt Shakman-directed 'Fantastic Four,' ahead of the studio's extensive hiatus from superhero films. Marvel is producing 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day,' the fourth Tom Holland-led entry set to release July 2026. But Sony is distributing that film. Disney will have nearly a year and a half to plan for its next MCU installment, the mega-team-up 'Avengers: Doomsday,' set for December 2026. Second place goes to Warner Bros.' 'Superman,' which added $7.1 million on Friday. It's down 57% from its daily total a week ago, now competing with a newer superhero spectacle. The cinematic universe-rebooter should fly to a $289 million domestic total after its third weekend, which will put it ahead of 'Sinners' ($278 million) to have it rank as the fourth-highest grossing North American release of the year. Universal's 'Jurassic World Rebirth' is sliding to third in its fourth weekend, adding another $3.6 million on Friday. The seventh entry in the dinosaur series is projecting $13 million for its fourth weekend, which would be another good hold at a 45% drop. Total domestic gross is expected to pass $301 million through Sunday — only the third release of 2025 to get into the triple hundreds. Fourth looks to go to 'F1.' Warner Bros.' release of Apple Studios' racing thriller added $1.8 million Friday, down just 37% from its daily total a week ago. At a production cost of $250 million, theatrical profitability is a questionable prospect at best for the Brad Pitt-led feature. But it has put up strong holds since debuting a month ago. The film looks to hit a $165 million domestic total through Sunday. Paramount's IP revival 'Smurfs' rounds out the top five, adding $1.72 million on Friday and projecting $5.6 million for its second weekend. After a low opening, that's a 49% second-weekend drop, showing some relative staying power as the only new animated offering to families. Domestic total will hit $22.9 million through the first 10 days — a disappointing result against a $58 million production budget.
