Egypt releases 1,056 prisoners by presidential pardon on anniversary of July 1952 Revolution - Courts & Law

Al-Ahram Weekly4 days ago
Egypt's Ministry of Interior announced on Saturday the release of 1,056 prisoners as per a presidential pardon on the 73rd anniversary of the July 1952 Revolution.
Thousands of inmates have been released in recent years in Egypt as per presidential pardon decisions on different national and religious occasions.
Celebrated every year on 23 July, the anniversary commemorates Egypt's 1952 revolution that overthrew the monarchy and led to the establishment of the modern republic. The day is widely regarded as the country's most significant secular public holiday and is officially observed as Egypt's National Day.

Tariff deadline of Aug 1 is firm, no extensions: US - Economy

The US deadline of August 1 for imposing tariffs on its trading partners is firm and there will be no extensions, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said Sunday. "So no extensions, no more grace periods. August 1, the tariffs are set. They'll go into place. Customs will start collecting the money, and off we go," Lutnick told "Fox News Sunday." After the levies kick in, President Donald Trump, who was negotiating Sunday in Scotland with European Union officials, is still willing to keep talking, Lutnick said. Of the Europeans, Lutnick said, "You know they're hoping they make a deal, and it's up to President Trump, who's the leader of this negotiating table. We set the table." So far five countries have struck deals with the Trump administration ahead of the Friday deadline as it tries to overhaul the global system of largely free trade by slapping tariffs on countries that the United States deems as engaging in unfair practices. These five are Britain, Vietnam, Indonesia the Philippines, and Japan. The levies they accepted are often higher than the new base rate of 10 percent that the United States has applied to most countries since April. But they are far below the levels the Trump administration threatened to impose if no deal were reached. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israeli army says two soldiers killed in south Gaza - War on Gaza

Two Israeli soldiers were killed in combat in southern Gaza on Sunday, the military said, a day after confirming another soldier had died of wounds sustained last week. The two soldiers, aged 20 and 22, served in the Golani Infantry Brigade's 51st Battalion. Israeli military sources said they were killed when their armoured vehicle exploded in the city of Khan Yunis. Military correspondents from several Israeli media outlets said the blast was caused by an improvised explosive device detonated by a militant who emerged from a tunnel. An investigation was underway. The Israeli military says 462 soldiers have been killed since the start of its war on Gaza on October 27, 2023. The Israeli war has killed 59,733 Palestinians, mostly civilians, according to the Palestinian health ministry. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Israeli forces intercept Gaza-bound aid boat Handala in international waters, detain crew - War on Gaza

Israeli forces have intercepted and boarded the Handala aid ship in international waters en route to Gaza, detaining all 21 people on board, according to a livestream and a statement from the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. The vessel was seized about 40 nautical miles off Gaza's coast. Livestream footage showed unarmed activists wearing life jackets with their arms raised as half a dozen Israeli soldiers approached. Communications from the ship were cut at 11:43 pm local time when onboard cameras were disabled. The Handala was carrying baby formula, diapers, food and medicine. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition described the cargo as life-saving aid for Gaza's 2.4 million residents, amid widespread famine and health system collapse caused by Israel's blockade. The passengers—journalists, parliamentarians, labour organisers, lawyers and other rights defenders from 12 countries—were detained and the cargo confiscated. Among those on board was French MEP Emma Fourreau, who posted on X: 'The Israeli army is here,' before confirming the crew would throw their phones into the sea. In a separate post, the Handala's crew said they would begin a hunger strike if detained. 'If the Israeli military attacks our vessel and prevents us from getting to Gaza, we will go on hunger strike immediately,' said Huwaida Arraf, a US-Palestinian lawyer and activist. 'We are not interested in receiving any food or water [from Israel] … and certainly not in the ways that they use it for propaganda, while at the same time they are starving to death Palestinian children,' she added. 'This is not a matter of internal Israeli jurisdiction,' said Ann Wright, a member of the Freedom Flotilla's steering committee. 'These are foreign nationals operating under international law in international waters. Their detention is arbitrary, unlawful, and must end.' The interception violated international maritime law. It marked the third time this year Israeli forces have stopped Freedom Flotilla vessels attempting to break Israel's blockade by delivering aid to Gaza by sea. In May, Israeli drones bombed the civilian aid ship Conscience in European waters, injuring four people. On 9 June, Israeli forces intercepted the Madleen in international waters and towed it to Ashdod. It carried 12 activists, including Swedish climate campaigner Greta Thunberg. The Handala departed from Sicily on 13 July to challenge what observers have described as a 'man-made famine' in Gaza. Israel imposed a total blockade on aid entering the territory on 2 March, as part of its war on Gaza, now entering its 22nd month. Over 100 humanitarian organisations have warned that 'mass starvation' is spreading across the territory. Most of those who have died from hunger are children.
