11 Dead, Many Injured As SUV Falls Into Canal In Uttar Pradesh
At least 11 people were killed and several others injured after a vehicle carrying at least 14 people plunged into the Saryu canal in Uttar Pradesh's Gonda district on Sunday, officials confirmed.
Superintendent of Police Vineet Jaiswal said, "Eleven people travelling in a Bolero from Sihagaon of Motiganj police station area to offer prayers at the Prithvi Nath temple of Khargupur died when the vehicle fell into the canal and drowned."
Eyewitnesses, who saw the vehicle sinking, immediately alerted the local police station, while others informed the village head (Gram Pradhan).
Personnel from the ItiyaThok police station quickly reached the spot and, with the help of locals, retrieved the bodies of the victims, which included men, women, and children.
SP Jaiswal also informed that four individuals were rescued from the canal with minor injuries and have been admitted to the District Hospital for medical care.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced ex gratia compensation of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of the victims.
Taking to X, CM Yogi posted, "The loss of life in the unfortunate accident in the district of Gonda is extremely tragic and heart-wrenching. My condolences are with the grief-stricken families."
"Instructions have been given to provide financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the family of those who lost their lives in this accident, and to the district administration officials to immediately take the injured to the hospital for their proper treatment," he said.
"I pray to Lord Shri Ram that the departed souls attain salvation, the bereaved families find the strength to bear this immense sorrow, and the injured recover swiftly. Om Shanti!" the Chief Minister wrote.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the accident.

It suggested that a favoured architect consultant was appointed without a proper tender, violating procurement and general financial rules, sources said. Although six consultants were empanelled, it was noted that financial bids must be called separately for each project. This requirement was ignored and an arbitrary decision was taken to appoint consultants district-wise or region-wise, they said, claiming that this effectively meant that a single consultant was allowed to handle all projects.

South African man arrested with heroin at Mumbai airport gets 15 yrs in jail
A special court sentenced to 15 years in jail a South African national, who was arrested with 3.98 kg of heroin at the Mumbai airport. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 1.5 lakh on the 30-year-old man, who had claimed that he was sent to India with a promise to be given an opportunity for football trials. The court on August 1 found Mapoma Joseph Lemao guilty under sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The court, however, acquitted another accused, Ramadhani Musa, who was alleged to be the person assigned to receive the delivery of the drugs, citing lack of evidence. The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had claimed that it had received information that a person travelling by flight of Ethiopian Airlines at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, on April 12, 2022, would be carrying contraband in his check-in baggage. The NCB had claimed that while conducting an inspection of a red trolley bag that the accused was carrying, it was found that the flaps of both sides of the bag were modified and covered with cotton cloth. When they were cut open, two plastic packets were found, hidden on both sides. The NCB claimed that the packets had a cream-coloured powder substance and the drug testing kit revealed it to be heroin. The accused's lawyer had said that there was no proof that the bag belonged to him as there was no proof that he had picked it up from the conveyor belt and that it was possible that it was 'planted' on him by the real culprit. The lawyer also submitted that the accused had travelled from Johannesburg to Addis Ababa and from Addis Ababa to Mumbai and his bag would have gone through a strict check but nothing was found. '…the bag was having a baggage tag which is mandatory to be affixed on the baggage and on the boarding pass. The baggage tag affixed on the bag was having details with the name of the accused the flight by which he travelled. In those… there are details of accused No.1. Under such circumstances, the allegations of planting the baggage or foisting the bag upon the accused are not certainly acceptable,' the court said. It also did not accept the accused's contention that proper procedure for search, seizure and analysis of the drug was not followed.

SPC calls for collective fight against drug menace
State Police Chief (SPC) Ravada A. Chandrasekhar has sought collective action to tackle drug menace, describing it as a national security concern that is seeping into schools, colleges, and rural communities. Speaking at the handing over of Soxtoxa analysers, a device for checking the presence of drugs, to the police in Kannur, he said that 25,000 drug cases had been registered so far this year. The SPC said drug abuse was no longer confined to dark alleys but was destabilising society by corrupting youth, destroying families, and fuelling organised crime. 'Kerala, with its high literacy rate, must not fall prey to this silent epidemic. Along with enforcement, early detection, timely intervention and strong partnership are essential,' he said. Highlighting enforcement efforts, Mr. Chandrasekhar said 30,000 cases were detected in 2023, while 27,000 cases were detected in 2024. This year alone, the police detected 3,000 ganja cases and seized 17 kg of MDMA. Pointing to large-scale drug seizures at ports and airports, he said enforcement was crucial to choking supply chains. He commended police personnel for their efforts but stressed the need for community participation. The SPC urged civic bodies, NGOs, educational institutions, parents, media, and student police cadets to join the fight against drugs. Sotoxa analysers were provided using the corporate social responsibility funds of Walker Foundation in collaboration with Kannur Seaside Rotary Club.
