For the Phillies, the roster features
many familiar faces
despite an early playoff exit in 2024. Still, there is one significant change fans will see as Philadelphia begins its quest for its third World Series in franchise history.
Kyle Schwarber is no longer in the leadoff spot, at least for Game 1. The Phils are batting Trea Turner leadoff and moving Schwarber to a more traditional slugging spot: cleanup.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson is expected to experiment with using multiple lineups depending on pitching matchups, which would be a change from the past. During his time as skipper, Thomson has tended to keep most of his lineups intact.
So, Schwarber might not be leading off today against a left-handed starter, but he's projected to still lead off against righties.
Zack Wheeler will start his
second consecutive opening day
for the Phillies. Washington sends MacKenzie Gore to the hill.
First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET. The game will air on NBC10 and NBCSP+ and broadcast on 94 WIP over the radio.

The Detroit Tigers are one of the best teams in the major leagues right now, and for very good reason. Great young talent on the team, a World Series champion manager, and one of, if not, the best pitchers in the game today in Tarik Skubal. But an underrated part of Detroit's success is their farm system, and it could help them get some good pickups at the trade deadline, especially second baseman Max Anderson, whom The Athletic predicts will be donning a new jersey come July 31. Anderson, who was selected by the Tigers in the second round of the 2023 MLB June Amateur Draft out of Nebraska, has been stellar with Double-A Erie, currently holding a .314 batting average with 12 long balls and 57 runs batted in during his 79 games played. "Anderson is having a great season, hitting above .300 in Double-A Erie and showing ability to get to his power in games. But his defensive ability is average at best, and with other infielders like Kevin McGonigle, Hao-Yu Lee and Jace Jung in the system, Anderson seems expendable to the Tigers. He could simultaneously be attractive to other teams in a high-priced market," Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic said. With the starting middle infield consisting of players like Gleyber Torres and Javier Baez, two All-Star Game starters from this year, perhaps Detroit can afford to ship off a prime prospect in order to get a slightly shinier diamond in the process as they look to make their way back to the World Series for the first time since 2012.

Issac Paredes injury update sparks Astros to check in on NL West power hitter
The MLB trade deadline is days away, and teams will be looking to make deals that can push them into the postseason and improve their chances of winning a World Series in 2025. One team looking to bolster their squad are the Houston Astros. Moreover, they have a major hole at third base with the injury to Issac Paredes and the Astros aren't optimistic that they'll have the Mexican player soon. Speaking on the team's pregame show with SportsTalk790, Astros general manager Dana Brown said Ronel Paredes' hamstring injury is 'a little more severe than we initially thought.' Brown added that Paredes will be seeking a second opinion from doctors. With this in mind, The Athletic's Chandler Rome reports that Houston are at least doing its due diligence with Eugenio Suárez as the Arizona Diamondbacks veteran appears to be the marquee player on the trade market this deadline. 'Suárez is the most straightforward way to address Paredes' potential season-long absence and, according to multiple league sources, the Astros have at least checked in with the Arizona Diamondbacks to make their interest known,' Rome wrote. 'Whether Houston has enough prospect capital to compete with Suárez's slew of other suitors is a legitimate question.' MORE:Astros receive discouraging injury update on All-Star infielder While most contending teams would welcome Suárez's 36 home runs and 87 RBI so far this season into their starting lineup, Rome questions whether it's the right fit since the Astros already have several right-handed hitters and lack left-handed ones. 'Another is perhaps more pertinent: Is Suárez even an ideal fit for the Astros' roster?' Rome added. 'Brown has not hidden the fact that he is searching for a left-handed bat, a stance he reiterated Sunday. Suárez hits right-handed and is strikeout-prone, problematic for an offense that — at full strength — has no balance and prides itself on putting the ball in play.' Houston have a few days to figure out their third base situation and whether or not they can add another left-handed bat into their lineup.

(AP Photo/Angelina Katsanis) The Yankees began Friday with a .214 combined batting average from anyone playing third base through their first 102 games of uneven overall performances in a season where they won 35 of 55, lost six straight on two occasions, won five straight and lost seven of 10 entering the final Sunday before the trade deadline. About three hours before the Yankees began their first home series following the All-Star break and coming off an ugly three-game series in Toronto, they announced a potential upgrade was looming in the form of Ryan McMahon for the price of sending two low-level pitchers to the Colorado Rockies. McMahon had the easy logistics of getting from the Rockies to the Yankees. About an hour after the trade was announced, he got into a rideshare from Baltimore, likely sat in some traffic on I-95 and made it to Yankee Stadium where the Yankees were enduring a 12-5 loss to the Phillies. His debut featured one hit and two strikeouts in an unsightly 9-4 loss best known for the Yankees losing Aaron Judge for about two weeks due to right elbow flexor strain. His second impression was a memorable one with two hits and three nice plays in the field after the Yankees were charged with 10 errors in their previous five games. While McMahon is not going to be the massive slugger of a third baseman, he is capable of chipping into wins like he did Sunday -- which coincided with the one-year anniversary of the Yankees acquiring Jazz Chisholm Jr. and making him a third baseman for the first time in his career. On Sunday, there was a nice swing with the bases loaded on a curveball by Zack Wheeler that wound up down the right field line for a two-run double in a four-run fourth and the hit preceded a leaping catch on Bryce Harper and a sliding stop on Trea Turner and those plays were made after he committed six errors and produced a .978 fielding percentage, his best at third base since a .979 mark in 113 games at third in 2021. 'Oh, man, it always feels good to come through with the stick,' McMahon said. 'We had that big inning. It was great. Stacked some really good at-bats, the guys in front of me loaded them up, and I put a good swing on it. You know, it's about aim sometimes.' It led to some discussion about good defense for a change, especially after the Yankees gave up two hits that led to five runs immediately after committing errors in the previous two games. 'There's some real athleticism, he's explosive, he's got a good arm,' manager Aaron Boone said after his team improved to 15-18 in one-run games and 10-15 when not homering. 'And there's a real good clock, but also like a calmness that he plays the position well.' 'Hopefully they hit the ball at him because it seems like he's going to catch it every time,' Carlos Rodon said. The Yankees do not need McMahon to be the anchor in the lineup but a contributor on both ends with a competent bat and dynamic glove. It remains to be seen how competent McMahon's bat will turn out since he struck out about 32 percent of the time and like many who ply their trade in Colorado perform differently on the road but they would certainly take anything close to the recent sample size of 11 games where McMahon is hitting .342. 'Honestly, just excited to do something to help the team,' McMahon said. 'Wins are important right now, so that's the angle. Happy to be doing some solid stuff out there.' Now the Yankees need to go on a run where various players are talking about producing solid things like clutch hits and plays in the field with the hope they can chip into the deficit they face with the Blue Jays. In the meantime, they can possibly feel some semblance of relief adding McMahon and Amed Rosario in a trade from the Washington Nationals can solve some of their infield woes in terms of production at the plate in an area that made it seem like a Yankee third baseman was an automatic out.
