Spy satellites to monitor other spy satellites. India will soon have its own constellation of satellites to keep an eye out for other satellites that might be surveilling India.
The project being undertaken by the Defence Ministry, which is in the process of being finalised, will have 'satellite mapping' capabilities and will be fully made in India, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ThePrint.
'India will be focusing on improving its presence in space in the coming years. This initiative will be a part of that larger aim,' a senior ISRO official said.
This network of satellites will enhance India's space domain awareness and will also help monitor orbital threats in real-time. The project is being overseen under NETRA, a Network for Tracking Space Objects and Analysis, which detects space debris and other hazardous space objects.
The official said that while ISRO will partner with the MoD in overseeing the overall design and monitoring of these satellites, a private Bengaluru-based space start-up, Digantara, has been contracted to deploy these satellites within the next year.
How does satellite mapping work?
The capabilities of monitoring foreign satellites is being acquired by countries including the US, Russia and China.
These satellites have propulsion and guidance systems that utilise factors such as orbital inclinations and altitudes to get information and photographs from a potential target satellite. Some of these satellites are also capable of intercepting inter-satellite communications and links to ground stations.
Varying versions of such technology are either already deployed or are currently being tested. In 2020, the US Space Command—an agency responsible for tracking all objects in orbit—flagged that the Russian satellite Kosmos 2543 had released an unknown object into space. This was believed to be a test of a new technology that could be used to destroy objects already in orbit.
The Russian satellite released this tech in close proximity to another Russian satellite.
'Space is increasingly becoming a weapon for countries. Battles will no longer be limited to just the ground, but will also be fought in space. And countries need to be ready for it,' the ISRO official said.
Focus on active orbital security
India is already working on increasing its defence capabilities in space. Its next 'spy satellite programme', spacebased surveillance-3 or SBS-3, will launch a constellation of 52 surveillance satellites in the coming two years. Three private space startups, Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies, have joined hands with the government to give shape to this project. The Rs 27,000 crore project is set to significantly improve India's national security capabilities.

Mercedes-AMG unveils Concept GT XX

TDT | agencies Mercedes-AMG has revealed the Concept GT XX, its first fully electric concept car and a preview of the brand's upcoming series-production EV. The four-door model is the first to be built on the new skateboard platform, specifically engineered for high-performance electric vehicles. At its core, the GT XX features three axial flux electric motors and a bespoke high-performance battery. The drivetrain technology comes from YASA, a British electric motor specialist and wholly owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. The setup includes two High-Performance Electric Drive Units ( — one at the front and a more powerful one at the rear. The rear houses two axial flux motors, each with a planetary gearbox and water-cooled inverter, all compactly packaged in a single casing. These components are oilcooled for efficiency, and the hydraulic pump control unit is also integrated. The front motor acts as a booster, engaging only when additional traction or power is needed. It can be disconnected via a Disconnect Unit (DCU) to reduce energy loss during cruising. Combined, the system delivers over 1,341 BHP, with rear-wheel drive as the default. Inspired by Formula 1 and the AMG One Hypercar, the GT XX's battery features an 800V architecture and supports ultra-fast DC charging. AMG claims charging speeds of up to 850 kW, enabling 400 km of range to be added in just five minutes — sustained across a wide portion of the charging curve. The Concept GT XX signals Mercedes-AMG's next step in high-performance electrification, blending cutting-edge battery tech with motorsport-grade drive systems.

Xiaomi receives almost 300,000 SUV pre-orders in minutes

hinese electric vehicle maker Xiaomi received almost 300,000 pre-orders within an hour for its first sport utility vehicles in what the company said was a "miraculous" moment for the industry. Lei Jun, founder and CEO of the electronics-turned-car company, said he was astonished by the reaction from customers. "My goodness, in just two minutes, we received 196,000 paid pre-orders and 128,000 lockin orders," Lei said in a video distributed after the vehicle's launch on Thursday night. "We may be witnessing a miracle in China's automotive industry." The company's electric vehicle division said later on its official Weibo account that there had been 289,000 pre-orders for the five-seater YU7, priced from 253,500 yuan (about $35,000), within the first hour of sales. Xiaomi's Hong Kong-listed shares soared eight percent at one point before paring their gains but ending at a record high. The Beijing-based commercial tech giant made its first foray into car-making with its SU7 EV model last year, part of a broader industry push to boost domestic consumption. Initial enthusiasm for intelligent driving features in such vehicles was tempered by the fatal crash of a Xiaomi SU7 in March. The vehicle had been in assisted driving mode just before it crashed, killing three students. Premier Li Qiang used the World Economic Forum in Tianjin this week to outline China's ambition to become a "major consumption powerhouse", emphasising policies to stimulate demand for high-value goods such as electric vehicles.
