Chandigarh: Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria honoured 237 outstanding students from Chandigarh who achieved above 90% marks in Class XII examinations at the Post Graduate Govt College for Girls, Sector 42, Chandigarh, on Wednesday.
Students received certificates and cash incentives of Rs 5,000 each from the UT education department.
The ceremony also recognised principals and teachers from four govt schools that achieved 100% results.
Also, the UT administration introduced three new educational initiatives during the event to enhance the city's educational framework.
Adopt-a-School Mentorship Initiative: It will encompass 42 govt schools, benefiting approximately 60,000 students.
Administration officials, professionals, and experts will guide students on health, hygiene, moral values, cyber awareness, and life skills, providing practical knowledge beyond academics.
Udaan Project: The education department's MoU with prestigious coaching institutes will provide free coaching to 700 talented students for competitive examinations like JEE, NEET, IAS, PCS, and NDA, supporting academically capable students with limited resources.
Cashless Campus: The initiative aims to ensure secure and transparent financial transactions whilst promoting digital literacy, supporting the vision of Developed India 2047.
The governor acknowledged that the students' achievements resulted from their efforts combined with teachers' and parents' support. He said, "The real credit for this success goes to the teachers. The respect for a teacher is the same today as it was earlier.
Time has changed, technology has changed, but the contribution and importance of the one who imparts education is still steadfast."
Kataria also emphasised that education extends beyond examinations, serving as an instrument for societal change. He noted that "we should not only have knowledge, but also the qualities of humanity."
Discussing Developed India 2047, the governor expressed his vision for Chandigarh: "Our dream is that Chandigarh should not only become a smart city but also a visionary city – where we show direction to the country on all parameters of education, innovation, cleanliness, digital progress, and good governance."
