West Rand crime crackdown leads to 97 arrests
Spokesperson for the Gauteng Traffic Police, Sello Maremane, said these operations were conducted by numerous law enforcement agencies, such as Gauteng Traffic Police, Gauteng Traffic Wardens and police.
He said in the City of Johannesburg, they arrested 39 suspects for charges including possession of drugs, armed robbery, contravention of the immigration act and possession of substances suspected to be drugs. He added that 885 people and 140 vehicles were searched in the city.
In the West Rand District Municipality, he revealed they arrested 97 suspects for charges including driving under the influence of alcohol, assault, shoplifting, substances suspected to be drugs and damage to infrastructure.
'Notably, 60 suspects were arrested during Operation Shanela targeting Fochville, Mohlakeng, Muldersdrift, Khutsong and Kagiso.
'The Gauteng Traffic Police commends the law enforcement officials on working together to eliminate criminality in our communities. Members of the public are reminded to comply with officials and report any suspicious behaviour to their nearest police station,' he concluded.

Police arrested 356 suspects on the weekend during Operation Shanela in Atteridgeville. The August 2 operation, aimed at increasing police visibility and restoring order, focused on the Atteridgeville policing precinct and surrounding areas. 'The joint efforts of this team yielded significant results, with 356 suspects arrested for various criminal offences. Tshwane District detectives launched the first phase of the operation by arresting 260 suspects, including 65 for gender-based violence-related (GBV) offences, three for murder, three for attempted murder, six for armed robbery, one for perjury, three for possession of unlicensed firearms, and six for rape. The second phase of the operation, executed by uniformed officers, involved a roadblock within the precinct, supported by two operational teams deployed across the area. As a result, 34 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and are currently being processed by immigration authorities for court appearances and deportation, with one person being fined for employing illegal immigrants. In total, 1 240 individuals and 518 vehicles were searched, with three vehicles being verified to determine whether they were stolen. This resulted in the recovery of a motor vehicle that was reported stolen earlier at Pretoria Central SAPS. Police arrested 37 people for driving under the influence of alcohol. One vehicle was confiscated due to non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act and 60 Aarto infringement notices were issued, amounting to R30 000. Targeted patrols and searches were also carried out at 25 identified crime hotspots, further disrupting criminal activity and resulting in the arrest of nine people for public drinking. Two suspects were arrested for dealing and possession of drugs when 417 ziplock bags containing various drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in their possession. Additionally, 32 liquor outlets were inspected for compliance, leading to the closure of 11 establishments due to their non-compliance. This resulted in the confiscation of 3460 litres of liquor and two gambling machines. The SAPS in Tshwane says it continues to maintain its zero-tolerance stance on crime through the continued execution of Operation Shanela across the metro. From August 1 to 3, the Phuza Weekend Operation conducted across various stations in Limpopo resulted in the arrest of 32 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol. The department hailed the operation as successful. Law enforcement officers worked tirelessly to ensure road safety and prevent accidents caused by drunk driving. The department lauded officers for their effective work during the Phuza Weekend Operation. It also condemned drivers who endangered themselves and others by driving under the influence of alcohol. 'Drunk driving is a serious offence that can result in accidents, injuries, and fatalities, and we urge all drivers to prioritise road safety and make responsible choices,' said MEC Violet Mathye. Additionally, one male driver was also arrested for interfering with officers while they were performing their duties. Moreover, Limpopo police netted 24 people for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs during Operation Shanela between July 28 and August 3. They also confiscated 1,353.20 litres of alcoholic beverages. Meanwhile, 12 male drunk drivers, aged between 26 and 50, were arrested over the July 26 and 27 weekend in Limpopo. The operation was focused in the Waterberg District (Mokopane and Northam) and Mopani District (Bolobedu and Tzaneen).
