Shell to relinquish Oman blocks 42 and 55

Zawya27-03-2025
MUSCAT: Shell has revealed that it plans to relinquish hydrocarbon blocks 42 and 55 – exits that will maintain the energy supermajor's leading presence in the Sultanate of Oman.
The energy giant made the announcement in its 2024 Annual Report published on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
'We have a 50 per cent interest in Block 42 under an exploration and production-sharing agreement (EPSA) where Shell is the operator,' said Shell. 'We also operate in Block 55 under an EPSA (Shell interest 100 per cent). We are in the process of relinquishing our interests in Block 42 and Block 55 to the government,' it added.
Shell added Block 42 to its upstream portfolio in April 2017 when the company signed a Heads of Agreement (HoA) with Oman Oil Company Exploration & Production (OOCEP) – since rebranded as OQEP – to collaborate on the development of the 25,600 km2 concession in northeast Oman.
An EPSA for Block 55 in the southeast of the country was signed in October 2019, committing a 100 per cent working interest and operatorship of the concession to Shell.
Despite the planned exits, Shell still enjoys a substantial presence in Oman's upstream energy sector. The company has a 34 per cent interest in Petroleum Development Oman (PDO), which operates the Block 6 oil concession – the largest in Oman, and accounting for the lion's share of the country's production of oil, natural gas and condensates.
'Shell is entitled to 34 per cent of oil produced from Block 6 through its interest in Private Oil Holdings Oman Ltd. The government of Oman has a 60 per cent interest in PDO and the Block 6 oil concession through its wholly owned company, Energy Development Oman (EDO). PDO operates a concession area of about 90,000 square kilometres and has more than 200 producing oil fields,' it noted.
Furthermore, Shell has a concession agreement for the development and production of natural gas and condensate in the Shell-operated Block 10 (Shell interest 53.45 per cent). 'We have a separate gas sales agreement and oil supply agreement for production from the block. We also have an exploration and production-sharing agreement for the exploration and appraisal of natural gas and condensate in the Shell-operated Block 11 (Shell interest 67.5 per cent),' the company further stated in its Annual Report.
In the LNG business, Shell has a 30 per cent stake in Oman LNG, as well as an indirect 11 per cent interest in Qalhat LNG.

Kuwait Petroleum annual profit slips 5.8% on lower crude prices

KUWAIT: State-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation posted a net profit of 1.366 billion dinars ($4.47 billion) for the fiscal year ended March 31, down 5.8% year-on-year according to Reuters calculations based on the company's latest annual report. The company and its subsidiaries posted a net profit of 1.450 billion dinars in the previous fiscal year. KPC did not give a reason for the decline, but lower oil prices likely dented returns. The average price of Kuwaiti crude fell 5.5% to $79.70 per barrel during the 2024/25 fiscal year, down from $84.40 a year earlier, according to Kuwait-based financial advisory firm AlShall. Despite the drop in profit, KPC subsidiary Kuwait Oil Company achieved its annual production target for the first time in seven years, with sustainable capacity reaching 2.59 million barrels per day, the report said. Kuwait Oil Company is the country's main crude producer, alongside Kuwait Gulf Oil Company, which operates in the Neutral Zone shared with Saudi Arabia. The report described the production milestone as "a major operational achievement" and noted that heavy crude output reached 95,000 bpd — its highest level since the heavy oil project began in 2020. Nvidia restarts manufacturing on H20 AI chips

Nvidia is ramping up production of a China-specific AI chip via its Taiwan-based contract manufacturer, with strong demand prompting it to not rely on existing inventories, Reuters reported. The news agency stated Nvidia ordered 300,000 H20 chips from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co, with stocks of the chip at between 600,000 and 700,000. In 2024, Nvidia sold about a million H20 chips in the mainland. In mid-July, the company said US authorities confirmed it would be given a licence to resume sales of its H20 chip in China. But opposition to the re-opening of sales drew sharp criticism from security experts and politicians in the US. The US government noted the move to resume H20 sales, which from April required an export licence, was part of negotiations with China over rare earth minerals, Reuters wrote. Nvidia reconfigured its high-end offerings for China after the US imposed export controls on the H100 in October 2023. Source: Mobile World Live Image Credit: Nvidia

Shell's profit drops by almost a third but easily beats expectations

LONDON - Shell's second-quarter adjusted earnings, its definition of net profit, tumbled by almost a third on Thursday, dragged down by a drop in oil prices, but still easily beat analysts' forecasts. The oil major said it would maintain the pace of its share buyback programme at $3.5 billion over the next three months, the 15th consecutive quarter of at least $3 billion. Shell has, meanwhile, achieved $3.9 billion in cost cuts compared with 2022, part of a cost-cutting programme aimed at saving between $5 billion and $7 billion by the end of 2028. It recorded cash flow from operations of $11.9 billion in the quarter, down from $13.5 billion a year ago. Together with $2.1 billion in dividends, that brings shareholder distributions to 46% of operating cashflow, within its 40% to 50% guided range. Shell's adjusted earnings reached $4.264 billion in the second quarter, smashing the $3.74 billion average in an analyst poll provided by the company but down 32% from a year ago. Global benchmark Brent crude prices averaged around $67 a barrel during the April-to-June quarter, compared with $75 a barrel in the first quarter and $85 a year earlier. Crude oil prices fell in the quarter as OPEC+, made up of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies such as Russia, began unwinding self-imposed production cuts aimed at supporting the market. Their most recent decision calls for an oil output increase of 548,000 barrels per day in August. Shell had guided in a trading update that it expected earnings to be hit by weaker trading in its integrated gas division and losses at its chemicals and products operations after an outage at its U.S. Monaca polymer plant.
