Preliminary report in Air India crash expected to be released by Friday, sources say

A
preliminary report
into the crash of an Air India jetliner that killed 260 people in June is expected to be released by Friday, a step that could provide early details into the world's worst
aviation disaster
in a decade, three sources said on Tuesday.
While the report from Indian investigators could be made public on Friday, the sources with knowledge of the matter cautioned that plans could change and there was no clarity on how much information would be available in the document, which comes about 30 days after the June 12 tragedy.
The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to media.

The London-bound
Boeing 787 Dreamliner
, which started losing height after reaching an altitude of 650 feet, crashed moments after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 of the 242 people on board and the rest on the ground.
The investigation into the Air India flight 171 crash is focusing on the movement of the
engine fuel control switches
, following an analysis of the Boeing 787's flight and voice data recorders, aviation industry publication the Air Current reported on Tuesday, citing people with knowledge of the investigation.
Live Events
The people said the available information on the black boxes could not rule in or out improper, inadvertent or intentional actions that preceded or followed the apparent loss of thrust before the aircraft crashed, the Air Current reported.
Most air crashes are caused by multiple factors. The investigation is focusing at least partly on engine thrust, Reuters reported last month.
India's
Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau
, which is leading the probe under international rules, did not respond immediately to a request for comment outside normal business hours.
Earlier on Tuesday, India's ANI news reported that investigators from the AAIB submitted the preliminary report on the crash to the civil aviation ministry, citing sources.
Reuters could not immediately confirm the report.
The probe has been dogged by questions over lack of information, after investigators took about two weeks to download flight recorder data after the crash. The Indian government held only one press conference on the incident, and no questions were taken.
However, India reversed course on an earlier decision reported by Reuters to prevent a U.N. aviation investigator from joining the probe, two senior sources said.
A specialist from the U.N.'s
International Civil Aviation Organization
(ICAO) was granted observer status, following an unusual request by the agency to offer its support.
ICAO declined to comment, adding in a statement that any public discussion of "cooperative arrangements," would require authorisation by the state.
The crash is challenging the Tata Group's ambitious campaign to restore Air India's reputation and revamp its fleet, after taking the carrier over from the government in 2022.
India is banking on a boom in aviation to support wider development goals, with New Delhi saying it wants India to be a job-creating global aviation hub along the lines of Dubai, which currently handles much of the country's international traffic.
A panel of Indian lawmakers will review safety in the country's civil aviation sector and has invited several industry and government officials to answer questions on Wednesday, with topics set to include the recent plane crash.

Pune civic body files only three against people for burning garbage in June

Pune: The civic administration has filed only three cases against people for burning garbage in June and levied a fine of Rs 15,000. Environmentalists claimed that Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is not focusing on solving the garbage burning issue. Many residents have observed the burning of dry garbage, garden waste, plastic bags, and tyres across the city. It not only leads to pollution but also increases the probability of health hazards. A dedicated team to deal with the issue is a must," an environmentalist said on condition of anonymity. Civic officials said ward-wise teams have been formed to find the offenders. "The number of offences has gone down due to awareness and previous action," a civic official said. The National Green Tribunal 's (NGT) western zonal bench in the city last week questioned the PMC over its action against burning. It directed PMC to submit a detailed response within two weeks on this matter. The civic administration in 2024 filed over 550 cases of burning trash. It found that unidentified people or beggars were involved in such cases. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Dedicated drives should be held at these spots," said Bharati Ranade, a resident of Shivajinagar. Burning of garbage on the riverbank in Kalyaninagar has become a regular feature, locals said. "Massive plumes of smoke are seen regularly, causing respiratory issues in nearby residents. We are unable to figure out tangible preventative measures to this recurring problem," said Drayson Dixon, a member of Team Swachh, Kalyaninagar. Residents of the area plan to approach Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) to highlight the regular violation of environmental norms. "Garbage at open places is burned late at night or early morning hours to avoid action. The civic body should conduct drives during these periods to catch offenders," said Gauri Kulkarni, a resident of Kothrud. Civic activists said PMC should display seriousness in dealing with the issues pertaining to air pollution. "Air quality in the city is very poor due to pollution. The number of vehicles has gone up drastically in the last few years. Burning of garbage is adding to the problem," said Vaishali Patkar, an environmentalist. As per civic officials, action is being taken under special solid waste management guidelines, which PMC approved in 2016. These guidelines describe a number of offences, including garbage burning, open defecation, not segregating wet and dry garbage, throwing trash in public places, and not handing over the garbage to wastepickers. Along with the regular action, PMC carries out drives to catch the offenders during festive periods. The fine amount ranges from Rs 200 to Rs 5,000 per offence. "PMC's solid waste management department checks chronic spots regularly. Squads have been formed to keep checks on these locations and they levy fines based on offences. Staff have been assigned even for cleaning during nighttime," said Sandip Kadam, head of PMC's solid waste management department.

13 die as Gujarat bridge collapses, 6 vehicles fall into Mahi river

Around 7.30 am, a large slab of the 43-year-old bridge over the Mahisagar River gave way. The bridge connected Vadodara and Anand districts, serving as a vital link between Central Gujarat and Saurashtra VADODARA: At least 13 people, including two children, died Wednesday morning when six vehicles plunged 50 to 60 feet into Mahi river after a key section of a 39-year-old bridge caved in near Mujpur village, 27km from Vadodara. The collapse reignited memories of the Morbi tragedy in Oct 2022, when a 19th-century suspension bridge gave way after renovation, killing 135 and injuring 56. Investigations blamed shoddy repairs and rushed timelines. Built in 1986, the bridge near Mujpur links central Gujarat to Saurashtra and is heavily used by trucks and tankers from industrial zones in Padra and Ankleshwar. Many commuters favour it to avoid tolls on Ahmedabad-Vadodara Expressway. A 15- to 20-metre segment of the 830m-long bridge gave way around 7.30am, sending three trucks, a pick-up van, an auto-rickshaw, and a seven-seater vehicle crashing into the water below. A large tanker truck teetered dangerously at the edge before being pulled to safety. Residents of nearby Dabka and Mujpur villages, jolted awake by the sound of collapsing concrete and cries for help, mounted rescue efforts for nearly an hour before teams from Vadodara fire brigade and NDRF arrived. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like An engineer reveals: One simple trick to get internet without a subscription Techno Mag Learn More Undo By late evening, 13 bodies had been pulled from the river. The victims were from Vadodara, Anand, and Panchmahal districts. Five injured survivors are being treated at SSG Hospital in Vadodara. "I was on my way to Anand. The truck suddenly began shaking violently. Before I could grasp what was happening, the bridge collapsed and I plunged into the river," said driver Ganpat Solanki, who survived the fall. Vadodara district panchayat member Harshadsinh Parmar had flagged concerns about the Gambhira bridge's condition to state govt in Aug 2022, prompting inspections. Funds were sanctioned recently, with a new Rs 212-crore bridge project in the pipeline. President Droupadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi, and CM Bhupendra Patel expressed condolences. Gujarat govt announced Rs 4 lakh in compensation for families of the deceased, while Centre pledged Rs 2 lakh from PM's National Relief Fund. The injured will receive Rs 50,000 from both state and Centre. Wednesday's tragedy added to growing calls for mandatory structural audits, stricter bridge maintenance, and accountability for years of neglected infrastructure. A 30-year-old iron footbridge over Indrayani river near Kundamala in Pune collapsed on June 15, killing four and injuring over 50. Age, overcrowding, and ignored safety warnings were cited as reasons.

MP board Class 10 & 12 supplementary exam results likely by July-end

Indore: The Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE) is expected to announce results of the second attempt of Class 10 and 12 examinations by July-end. Over 3.3 lakh students from the state had appeared for the supplementary exams this year, which were held from June 17 to July 5. The evaluation process for these papers is currently underway in two distinct phases. The first phase, which began earlier this month, will conclude on July 11. The second phase is scheduled from July 12 to 20. Nearly 10 lakh answer sheets submitted by students, who were not able to score well in one or more subjects in the main board examinations conducted in March, are being evaluated According to MPBSE officials, the results are likely to be declared shortly after the evaluation ends. "The evaluation work is progressing as planned and is expected to conclude by July 20. The results should be out by the end of the month," MPBSE chief systems officer Bhupesh Gupta told TOI. The delay in declaration has left several Class 12 students in a dilemma as the ongoing college admission process in the state is already in its third round. College-level counselling is currently being conducted and the uncertainty over results has made it difficult for many students to secure admissions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo "I am waiting for my second attempt results as I feel my overall percentage might increase and help me secure admission in a better college as per my percentage," said a student Mohita, who had appeared in Class 12 examination. Students, who will pass the second attempt exams, will receive regular marksheets. Class 10 candidates will be eligible for provisional admission to Class 11, while successful Class 12 candidates may receive conditional admission to undergraduate courses, pending final result confirmation. The supplementary exam initiative, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, stems from recent amendments to the MPBSE Regulations, 1965. It is designed to provide students with a second opportunity within the same academic session. This move aims to reduce dropouts and support students in overcoming academic challenges. Out of more than five lakh students, who failed in the main exams this year, over 3.3 lakh opted to reappear under this revised provision.
