Ritu Varma charting her own path
I've been wanting to do a web series for quite a while but was waiting for something truly unique. While I've worked on anthologies, short films, and mini-series in Telugu and Tamil, I wanted to commit to a full-fledged web series. When this script came my way, I instantly connected with it; the honesty and freshness really stood out. The story revolves around a girl from a small town, born into a conservative Brahmin family. She's grown up in a very sheltered environment and is quite timid and hesitant, always used to others making decisions for her. Her life changes dramatically when she encounters Danny, a ghost. What unfolds is a story of self-discovery, hope, companionship, and the triumph of good over evil. While we were shooting, I had a feeling the audience would like it. But the overwhelming response from friends and family binge-watching it has been so heartwarming. It's a sweet, simple story that seems to have struck a chord with many.
What drew you to this project, especially since it's your first web series?
For me, the story is always the hero. And my character was beautifully written. What I really loved was the transformation arc; people are used to seeing me in strong, independent roles and as characters who have it all figured out. But here, I play an innocent, naive girl, someone who steps out of her comfort zone and rediscovers herself. That contrast is what really excited me.

Gautham Ram Karthik's sci-fi film titled ‘Root'; Aparshakti Khurana to make his Tamil debut
We had previously reported that Tamil actor Gautham Ram Karthik will star in a sci-fi crime thriller directed by Sooriyaprathap S. Now, on Wednesday (July 2), the makers have announced that the film's been titled Root – Running Out of Time. Further, the makers announced that Bollywood actor Aparshakti Khurana will make his Tamil debut with the upcoming film, which stars Bhavya Trikha as the female lead. Root was officially launched with a traditional pooja ceremony on Wednesday in Chennai. Details regarding the plot remain unknown. Sooriyaprathap S, from the show Naalaiya Iyakkunar season 1, previously worked as an associate director on superstar Rajinikanth's Kochadaiiyaan, directed by Soundarya Rajinikanth. The film will have cinematography from Arjun Raja while John Abraham has been roped in as the editor. Vithushanan is the music composer. Bhavna Govardan leads the production design department while the action choreography will be done by Miracle Michael. Santhakumar of Hocus Pocus Studios heads the VFX department. Srini's Birbal 2, backed by KVN Productions, to go on floors
Director Srini, known for his action-thriller Ghost starring Shivarajkumar, is all set to revive his detective drama with Birbal 2. Sources reveal that the sequel has officially kicked off, with the high-profile KVN Productions backing the project. Venkat K Narayana is already backing KD, starring Dhruva Sarja, and the much-anticipated Jana Nayagan with Tamil superstar Vijay. Though the project details have been kept under wraps, Cinema Express has learnt that Birbal 2 quietly commenced with a formal muhurath, and shooting is expected to begin later this week.

‘Thug Life': Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film drops on OTT after 28-day theatrical run
Thug Life, starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, has arrived on the OTT space after its 28-day theatrical run. The gangster drama, which hit the screens on June 05, 2025, failed to create magic at the box office. Produced by Kamal Haasan's Raaj Kamal Films International and Mani Ratnam's Madras Talkies, Thug Life is currently streaming on Netflix. The Tamil film also stars Silambarasan T R, Nasser, Trisha, Joju George and Ashok Selvan. Thug Life opened to negative reviews from critics. Fans were disappointed that the Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam combinaion couldn't recreate the magic of Nayakan (1987), the first collaboration between the two artists. The movie is about an ageing gangster who has to protect his family when a power struggle tears through his clan, and enemies return seeking vengeance. The Hindu review of the film said, 'It doesn't help that the film fails to add more to its archaic fight-for-the-throne conflict at the centre of the film. Subplots and layers seem added purely for convenience, like a character that returns in the climax to serve a meagre purpose. You also feel bad for Silambarasan since Amar never comes into his own or grows beyond what the plot requires him to do. A lion's share of the screen space is given to Kamal, and the veteran aces his role as an ageing man fighting the God of Death — be it in the more tender moments like the aforementioned scene with Abhirami, or the many face-offs he has on rooftops and cliffs. But is he really feeling the weight of his actions or questioning his morality as the Sakthivel Naicker we once knew? The verdict is still out.' Thug Life missed its release in Karnataka due to a controversy. During a promotional event, Kamal Haasan said that 'Kannada language is born from Tamil', leading to widespread opposition in the State. Despite a favourable response from the Supreme Court, Thug Life had no takers in Karnataka as it failed to meet expectations at the box office.
