The SNP 's ferry fiasco deepened last night as shock new figures revealed more than TEN THOUSAND trips to and from Scotland's islands had to be cancelled.
An astonishing 10,809 crossings were scrapped by Scotland's crisis-hit ferry operator CalMac in just over two years due to technical faults.
It comes as the state-owned firm has suffered years of problems caused by its ageing fleet, which provides a lifeline to Scotland's island communities.
Services have also been impacted by the almost £500m scandal surrounding delivery of its two new ferries for the Arran service, the Glen Sannox and the Glen Rosa, which have been dogged by years of delays and spiralling costs.
Last week, a Holyrood committee warned a state-owned shipyard tasked with building the ferries, Ferguson Marine, that it had 'failed to meet the standards expected of a publicly funded body'.
And in May ministers brushed over grave concerns about CalMac's record by awarding it a £3.7billion contract to run the Clyde and Hebrides services for another ten years.
Last night, Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP Jamie Greene slammed the SNP for failing Scotland's islanders.
He said: 'These figures reveal just how much chaos the SNP are causing island communities.
'Our island communities are being treated as second class citizens, lacking the basic right to access the same public services as mainland Scots.
'The SNP's failure to deliver new lifeline ferries has anchored islanders with an ageing fleet that is in constant need of repair, at constant risk of cancellation and costing millions in repair bills.
'My constituents on the west coast are suffering the depressing reality of losing business, missing events and hospital appointments and, frankly, they have lost faith in the Scottish Government's ability to fix those problems.'
The figures, obtained by Mr Greene's party under freedom of information laws, show that over a 851-day period, there were 10,809 cancelled sailings, which occurred on 548 out of those 851 days - around 64 per cent of the time.
A number of vital routes have suffered delays or cancellations owing to a 'lack of vessel availability'.
A key factor in timetable, route changes and cancellations is the age of CalMac's 35-strong fleet.
Many vessels - most of which are leased from the state-owned ferry procurement agency CMAL -have been forced to operate beyond their expected lifespans, leading to growing levels of breakdowns.
The Mail on Sunday has told how over the past decade, the repair bill for CalMac's eight largest ferries was £100million.
And last month, Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar told John Swinney at First Minister's Questions that overall, the company had spent £250million on its breakdown-prone fleet since 2014.
Examples of swingeing delays due to breakdowns include the 32-year-old MV Caledonian Isles, which is supposed to cover the busy Arran route and has required more than £22million of repairs. It has been out of service since January 2024.
In April, it emerged taxpayers had been left with a £1million compensation bill for food and hotels for travellers stranded by cancelled and disrupted CalMac sailings since 2021.
Scandal has dogged SNP ministers in particular after they signed off the purchase of two CalMac boats, the Glen Sannox and the Glen Rosa, for the West Coast in 2015 for £97million.
While the Glen Sannox was delivered seven years late, the Glen Rosa is set to be delivered eight years late, with the total cost for the vessels passing £460million.
Mr Sarwar recently went further and said Mr Swinney's SNP had spent almost £500million on the two ferries - and 'cannot be trusted with the public's money'.
Despite the problems, ministers awarded CalMac a £3.7billion contract to run the Clyde and Hebrides services for another ten years in May.
And last week, the state-owned shipyard which was tasking with building Glen Sannox and Glen Rosa, Ferguson Marine, was at the centre of a scathing Holyrood report.
The public audit committee said a host of failures and a battered reputation had left Ferguson Marine with an empty order book and at risk of collapse - and warned that without more 'urgent investment' from taxpayers, the 'viability' of the Clydeside yard was in doubt.
A CalMac spokeswoman said that the more than 10,000 cancelled trips represented just five per cent of their planned sailings since 2023.
She added: 'In a typical day we operate over 450 sailings and our staff work hard to provide a good service in challenging circumstances. In fact, poor weather remains the most common cause of disruption.
'In terms of technical problems, these do happen with an aging fleet and in increasingly challenging weather.
'However, the arrival of 13 new vessels by 2029, which started with MV Glen Sannox in January this year, will reduce these and modern vessels will improve the reliability and resilience of services across the whole network.'
A Transport Scotland spokesman said: 'Between January 1 2023 and April 30 2025, over 95 per cent of the 391,139 scheduled sailings operated.
'We are investing in six, new, major vessels to serve Scotland's ferry network from early 2025, alleviating the need for extensive repairs on older vessels and improving reliability.
'Contracts have also been signed for a further seven, new, smaller vessels to serve the Clyde and Hebrides ferry network.
'CalMac are delivering services in increasingly challenging weather and the arrival of 13 new vessels by 2029, which started with MV Glen Sannox in January this year, will reduce technical issues and these modern vessels should also be able to operate in more challenging weather and sea conditions.'

But community-minded Partick Thistle has urged its fans to throw open the doors of their homes to provide digs for its future stars. The club, which is owned by its supporters, has asked for help in providing any out-of-town signings with a roof over their head. The Scottish Championship side, which missed out on a lucrative promotion to the Scottish Premiership at the end of last season, has insisted the move is not due to financial pressures but to promote better player integration. A spokesman told the Daily Record: 'As a fan-owned club, we're always keen to involve Thistle supporters where we can and this is a great example of that. 'Embedding new players and potential new recruits in the community that surrounds our club helps them to settle more quickly and also provides valuable support in lots of ways when moving to a new city. 'It is common practice at clubs of all sizes across the UK. It's not a reflection of financial constraints, but rather part of our broader approach to community integration.' It comes after the Firhill club made several domestic signings this year including Sean Kelly, 32, who joined the Jags in February on a deal until the end of the season and keeper Lewis Budinauckas, 23, who returned to the club last month on a one-year contract. Irish-born defender Dan O'Reilly, 30, also signed for the Scottish Championship side in January last year on an 18-month contract with a one-year contract extension in October. Thistle have faced financial challenges in previous seasons, particularly since their relegation from the Scottish Premiership at the end of the 2017-2018 season. The latest accounts show the club's turnover was £3,203,875 in the year ending May 31, 2024, compared to £2,817,844 the previous year. The financial year ending May 2024, saw a pre-tax loss of £131,811, an improvement of £224,023 on the prior accounting period. Last month, the club appealed for volunteers to help get the club ready for the new season. A statement on their website said: 'In recent years supporters and members of the local community have joined forces with the club's Maintenance Team to have our home spruced up through fresh paint and other odd jobs. Paint brushes, paint as well as other equipment and materials will be supplied.' In May it was confirmed that Mark Wilson would become permanent head coach. The Partick Thistle spokesman added: 'This initiative has been introduced by our recently appointed Sporting Director Ian Baraclough who has worked at both club and international football in recent seasons. He views it as best practice especially with the safeguarding checks that the club would undertake.'

An elderly couple embroiled in a seven-year battle to move into a £550,000 dream home have said they are being 'stonewalled' by a Scottish council. Nigel and Pat Sharp bought an empty Royal Bank of Scotland building in Westgate, North Berwick, in 2018. Their plans to renovate the coastal Victorian property to make it suitable for Mr Sharp, 78, who has Parkinson's disease, have been thwarted by East Lothian council, which insists it is a commercial building, of which there is short supply. The couple have accused the council of wanting to build 'more carbuncles' and blocking their efforts to preserve the 'architectural Victorian heritage of North Berwick'. During the planning struggle, Mr Sharp's condition deteriorated and he was forced to move into a residential care home. The couple's hopes of creating their dream home rest on a final appeal set to be heard by the Labour-run council's planning department in August. 'I could turn the bank into a future proof home with a lift and easy wheelchair access,' said Mrs Sharp. 'If we at last get our planning permission I regard it as a win for beautiful North Berwick. 'We're just passing through. Let our legacy be one of carefully conserving what we've inherited, not building more carbuncles.' The former bank was originally on sale without planning permission to turn it into a residential property. Mr and Mrs Sharp paid more than double the £250,000 asking price to outbid other parties. When the council rejected their plans to renovate the property, architect Andrew Megginson unearthed an old photo from before the RBS took over. It showed that the Victorian property, once known as Park House, boasted a garden and large conservatory and there had been a carriage house and garages accessed through the double gates. 'This makes it clear that what we now own was historically more than half residential,' said Mrs Sharp. 'RBS retained the drawing room, and sold the remaining house to the bank manager, where his daughter and family lived.' She said designs for a modern house were submitted after three councillors indicated support for their plans. 'Again, to our astonishment, they knocked it back,' said Mrs Sharp. 'Then they changed their view to 'North Berwick needs offices'… and now this has continued for years.' The council later granted planning permission for a café and two offices but the couple claims this attracted little interest. 'After more than 83 viewings, we have demonstrated completely there is no appetite whatsoever for any commercial enterprise there – even less so with the new parking laws about to be inflicted on North Berwick,' said Mrs Sharp. 'We have repeatedly asked the council for a meeting to find a way to progress, which is our right. 'We have always been respectful and polite in all our dealings with planners and councillors, despite long periods of being stonewalled by everyone.' A spokesman for East Lothian council said the couple's appeal will be considered in August. 'The applicant's agent, interested parties and consultees have all been contacted,' they said.

The SNP Socialists group said that following a committee meeting on July 2, they approved proposals to work with 'progressive left organisations' and interest groups to shape the SNP's policy platform ahead of the Holyrood 2026 election. Ahead of the party's upcoming conference in October, the left-wing branch have said they want to make sure that the party membership is involved in defining the independence strategy, rather than party bosses. Co-convener Graham Campbell, an SNP Glasgow councillor, said that the group don't think the party's position has been 'strong enough', particularly in the wake of the shock by-election loss to Scottish Labour in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse. READ MORE: New poll predicts Reform Westminster win with no Scottish MPs In a statement seen exclusively by The National, SNP Socialists said that the executive committee met to 'approve proposals to work jointly with other progressive left organisations within the party affiliates and interest groups in order to help shape the SNP's policy platform and election manifesto at this year's Annual Conference'. They continued: 'We're doing this for two reasons. First, to tackle the seeming inertia in some sections of the party bureaucracy towards forming a strategy for achieving our main goal of independence. 'Secondly, to ensure that the SNP membership is fully involved in defining that strategy. 'We call upon the NEC to accelerate that process since many party members and delegates clearly expressed their views to us at the National Council in Perth on June 21st and after the Hamilton by-election loss on June 5th. We want them to be heard: Loud and Clear.' Graham CampbellThe SNP National Council met in June, with First Minister John Swinney chairing an open forum for members to put their views to him on independence. But SNP Socialists insist that ahead of the Holyrood 2026 election, the party must put forward a 'progressive left, democratic socialist, manifesto'. 'We must therefore inspire hope for Independence as THE vehicle for radical change,' the statement continued, adding that changing council tax, reforming land ownership, taxing wealth, tackling the housing emergency and climate change, must be central to what the party puts forward to voters. 'We are determined to make sure that SNP members and activists are at the centre of party policy-making discussions and decisions come October's Annual Conference in Aberdeen,' the statement concluded. 'Only an SNP victory can guarantee we keep taking the necessary next steps towards an independent Scotland.' 'Even independence supporters know that we don't have a judicial route to a referendum, they know that we can't do it that way. 'It is obviously wrong for us to call for a second mandate to do that, when it [a referendum] can be blocked. 'So then is a de facto referendum going to be the strategy? It wasn't clear from the National Council whether that's been ruled out. We're no wiser after two conferences to discuss that specifically.' Campbell argued that part of achieving independence will be 'inspiring people', but that the party needs to work on the vision it is putting forward to voters. He said that the SNP should be making clear the policies that make lives better for Scots could be at risk if the party loses power – such as mitigating the two-child benefit cap and bedroom tax. Campbell added that the party then needs to relate manifesto pledges to 'how they relate to an independent country'. 'We need to be spelling out clearly what the content [of independence] is so people know what they're voting for,' he added. 'I think if it's clearer what independence means then you have more of a means, the right to have that focus on the doorsteps, because at the moment they just see it as an abstract thing.' Campbell admitted that First Minister and SNP leader John Swinney had tried to put more 'flesh on the bones' of the content of independence, but that it needs to be set out simply and clearly to voters. Responding, SNP depute leader Keith Brown said: 'The SNP will use the period from now until the 2026 election to make the case for Scotland's right to choose its own future – offering a forward-thinking manifesto that reflects the priorities of modern Scotland. 'We welcome all ideas to that which would help create a better Scotland. 'After a year of let downs from the UK Labour Government, it's clear that real change will never come from Westminster – only the SNP will stand up for Scotland and offer a better future with independence.'
