PARTLY FACETIOUS: Our bureaucrats dress better than our politicians

Business Recorder20 hours ago
'I remember the sayings of the wise man!'
'Who? Jinnah the father of our nation said to the civil servants that you have to do your duty as servants; you are not concerned with this or that political party that is not your business. It is a business of politicians to fight out their case under the present constitution or the future constitution that may be ultimately framed, you, therefore, have nothing to do with this party or that party. You are civil servants.'
'Our civil servants have taken on a new and improved role, they are more educated than our politicians, they dress better than our politicians, they…'
'But they, like our party leaders sport resident permits of other countries, have assets stashed…'
'For Pete's sake, get with the ground realities. Anyway, you reckon Jinnah would have endorsed the twenty-sixth amendment to the constitution?'
'It may not have been formulated if he were alive but once passed by parliament I am confident that Jinnah would have abided by it unless of course a two-third majority had voted it…'
'Ah indeed, but Jinnah was not the wise man I was referring to?'
'Oh Iqbal said…'
'Nope.'
'OK, give me a hint: is it a Pakistani passport holder or…'
'Yes, and I don't think you will be able to guess. I was referring to the famous saying – a degree is a degree, whether it is fake or not.'
'That guy has not been in the public eye for a long time, what made you think of him.'
'Well, if substitute the word deal for degree, then…'
'Careful be careful.'
'No, Pakistan has got a deal with the US and though I haven't seen the deal itself – I am not sure that the 29 percent tariffs announced by President Trump are…'
'Aurangzeb did a Hafeez Sheikh.'
'Well for your information there has been no mention of tariffs, and how much of tariff-free US goods are going to be allowed into the country and given our rather measly trade surplus with the US, about I reckon 2 billion dollars…'
'A US oil company, yet to be identified, will come and invest here and…'
'Not to develop rare earths?'
'No and when I said Aurangzeb did a Sheikh I meant he magnanimously and appropriately thanked all the Pakistani officials who helped in the deal making, remember Sheikh thanked his official driver for his contribution to the budget of that year in the budget speech and…'
'Great men think alike, I guess.'

The sources told The Express Tribune that no such application is currently being processed at the Ministry of Interior. They clarified that the ministry does not issue family visas or any other types of visas, and that claims suggesting otherwise are inaccurate. Furthermore, they stated that visa matters of this nature fall solely under the jurisdiction of the Pakistan High Commission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 'Right now he's in really, really poor conditions and it looks like they're getting worse by the moment,' Kasim said, adding that his father was being kept in solitary confinement. 'He's showering in muddy water. Ten people have reportedly died in those filthy conditions,' he claimed. The former prime minister has been incarcerated since August 2023. Businessmen voice concerns over trade challenges at Iran, Afghanistan borders

ISLAMABAD: The representatives of Quetta Chamber of Commerce informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance at length about the major challenges being faced by local businessmen in carrying out trade activities through the Pakistan-Iran and the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas, a statement said. The businessmen also highlighted that despite importing hundreds of items from Iran, Pakistan exports only 10 items to the neighbouring country, exposing a stark imbalance in bilateral trade, the statement added. As per the details, Quetta chamber president Muhammad Ayub Mariani, senior vice president Haji Akhtar Kakar, vice president engineer Mir Wais Khan, and others stated that not only had they conveyed the obstacles in bilateral trade with Iran and Afghanistan to the higher authorities, but also held dialogues with Afghan and Iranian officials in that regard. Govt bars pilgrims from traveling to Iran, Iraq by road this Arbaeen The participants were informed that due to the requirement of the Electronic Import Form (EIF) form, bilateral trade had come to a halt, and Pakistani cargo trucks were being held in Iran unnecessarily for 15 to 20 days. Complaints were also made about the increase in attestation and visa fees. They also discussed the Joint Economic Forum and Joint Border Trade Committee with Iran, lamenting that the recommendations of the Economic Forum and Joint Border Committee had not been implemented by either country. The businessmen demanded the inclusion of officials from the federal ministries of Commerce and Finance, as well as the prime minister's representatives, in the merging of the Economic Forum and Joint Border Trade Committee, so that matters could reach a logical conclusion. They expressed reservations about the reopening and then closure of the Badini border, the reopening of Qamaruddin Karez border, inactivity of border markets, and other issues, and presented suggestions. The businessmen stated that if cold storage and LPG terminals and other issues at Chaman and Taftan borders were resolved, trade volume with neighboring countries could be significantly increased. On the occasion, committee chairman Saleem Mandviwalla said for the past six months, they had been receiving complaints in Islamabad regarding Pakistan-Iran and Pakistan-Afghanistan bilateral trade issues. Cross-border trade: FBR issues PSW (Evidence of Identity) Regulations Some issues would be resolved on the spot, while others would be conveyed to higher authorities, he added. Mandviwalla said mentioned that the Iranian Consul General had given them a list of issues, and Balochistan's business community also shared their problems. They would be presented to the Iranian president and the high-level delegation accompanying him, he added. Iran President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian is due to visit Pakistan on August 2 (Saturday) for a two-day trip.

Imran's sons awaiting ‘interior ministry's approval' for visas: Aleema

Sons of incarcerated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founding chairman Imran Khan — Sulaiman and Kasim — have applied for Pakistani visas, Imran's sister Aleema Khan said on Friday. In a post on X, Aleema said, 'A few days ago Suleiman and Kasim applied for their visas with the Pakistan high commission in London. The ambassador has intimated that he is awaiting approval from the ministry of interior in Islamabad.' In a statement last week, Aleema said that Kasim and Sulaiman held National Identity Cards for Overseas Pakistanis (NICOPs) and are expected to visit Pakistan soon to meet their imprisoned father. Imran Khan's sons coming to Pakistan, claims Aleema Khan Speaking to reporters outside Adiala Jail, she confirmed that both the sons of the ex-prime minister possessed valid travel documents and 'will come to see their father anytime soon.' However, she withheld specific dates, hinting at the fluidity and uncertainty surrounding their planned visits amid a politically charged environment. Government ministers have suggested the possibility that visa refusals might prevent the young men from entering the country. But Aleema dismissed such claims as a transparent ploy – a calculated attempt by authorities fearful that the presence of Imran's sons could galvanise public support and intensify demands for his release. 'This is nothing but political harassment and an infringement upon the rights of a Pakistani citizen,' she lamented. 'They want to isolate my brother, weaken his morale, and prevent the masses from seeing his condition. But we will not be intimidated.' She revealed that her sisters, Noreen Khan and Uzma Khan, were denied permission again to meet Imran. Previously, the Adiyala jail had allowed six visitors at a time; this was subsequently reduced to just two.
