Minton brothers lead Serra to WCAL championship with no-hitter, 4-for-4 day

Like many athletic programs, Serra baseball prides itself on family — and, boy, did the Minton brothers offer one heck of a championship performance on Tuesday.
Davis Minton, a senior pitcher and infielder, fired a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts and one walk in a 13-0 victory at Riordan to clinch the West Catholic Athletic League outright regular-season title, setting off a double celebration.
Davis also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a couple of runs, only to be outdone offensively by his sophomore brother Aaron, who went bonkers, going 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBIs. Aaron, who struggled earlier in the year, is 7-for-7 in his last two games with two homers and 10 RBIs.
All of it added up to a joyous day for the Padres (21-5, 11-2) who won their second straight regular-season crown; they shared it last season with Valley Christian. It was the first time back-to-back titles had been won in the WCAL in 12 years.
Serra closed the regular season Thursday at home against Riordan before next week's WCAL tournament.
'It was a heck of a way to celebrate a championship,' said Serra second-year coach Mat Keplinger, whose previous experience was in college at San Jose State, USF and San Joaquin Memorial JC. 'It's definitely a competitive, tightly knit group who really care and love one another. They've learned to play together and found different ways to win.'
With 18 seniors graduated from last year's powerhouse team, including 10 now playing in college, the Padres have gone from a big-inning, long-ball team to emphasizing speed and execution — classic small-ball stuff.
Serra has stolen exactly 100 bases, led by Metro Player of the Year candidate Ian Josephson with 22. Combine that with his team-leading .500 batting average (41 of 82) with nine doubles, six home runs and 32 runs and Keplinger couldn't come up with enough superlatives for Josephson, a St. Mary's signee.
'Just a monster season,' he said of the team's starting shortstop who was a starter at first base last season. 'So many of these guys have had to adjust from their roles last year.'
That includes Davis Minton, the team's closer last season. He battled arm problems through the fall and winter and has slowly been transitioned into a starting spot on the mound. He's been more than solid at third base while hitting .350 with 28 hits and a team-best 21 RBIs to go along with three doubles and three home runs.
Senior Evan Bradshaw is second on the team with a .417 batting average and 35 hits and 20 RBIs.
The mainstay on the mound has been junior right-hander Riley Lim (5-0, 2.55 ERA), while Keplinger has mixed-and-matched the second starting spot most of the year with Aiden Watters (5-0, 1.25), Richie Calderon (4-0, 2.62) and Kelley Crawford (3-2, 2.42).
SFIAC event: The ninth annual San Francisco High School Awards are scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday at the San Francisco Italian Athletic Club, with proceeds benefiting the Academic Athletic Association.
Among the many to be honored for being the best in their sports are Jarious Hogan (St. Ignatius, football), Jasir Rencher (Riordan, boys basketball), Tara Dacic (Riordan girls basketball), Carol Manu (St. Ignatius, girls volleyball), Archer Horn (St. Ignatius, baseball), Kate Kennedy (University) and Nes Emeneke (Riordan) as scholar athletes.
Top overall athletes to be honored will be Ellie McCuskey-Hay (St. Ignatius) and John Tofi Jr. (Riordan), with additional honorees including Joseph Smith (Balboa football), Naomi Mendez and Zoe Ivatt (Lowell girls soccer), Lincoln's Ceyan Lutt and University's Lucas Lau (boys basketball) and Patriceia Walsh (Lowell girls basketball).
For tickets, call 415-781-0166 or visit sfiacfoundation.org.
Aumua, a 5-foot-10 first baseman and Auburn signee, broke the NCS career home run record on April 30 with two homers against Dublin, giving her 43. She now has 46 with one more regular-season game remaining, along with the postseason. Granada is 13-9.
'It means a lot to break another record,' Aumua said. 'It's another reflection of the work I put in day in and day out.'
Briefly: Angelique Boccara has been named the new head girls basketball coach at St. Ignatius. … Some 40 to 50 college football coaches are expected Wednesday night at Serra's Brady Stadium for the Serra College Showcase. De La Salle-Concord (6-6:45 p.m.), Sacred Heart Cathedral (6:45-7:15) and Serra (7:15-8) will do drill work and then be able to mingle with coaches. 'We had a couple kids offered scholarships that day,' said Serra coach Patrick Walsh. 'It's a great event for the kids, coaches and community.' The public is invited to the free event.

Expert picks & predictions for tonight's game between the Padres and the Marlins 'Looking at the second half of the year per Tankathon, San Diego has the 4th-easiest strength of schedule remaining The Padres open the second-half with three games at the Nationals, three more at the Marlins, then to St. Louis for three more road games as part of a nine-game East Coast road trip. However, we have to admit, those are decent matchups to have a winning record across for a 9-game road trip — in other words, it could be much worse. After that nine-game road trip, the next 27 games will be on the West Coast for San Diego, whether they are in California, Arizona or Washington (the state). San Diego will be in a prime position to make a run at the playoffs, but I still haven't gotten to the best part. The final month of the season is a great opportunity for the Padres to gain ground too -- in the final 28 games -- 13 of those are against the Orioles, White Sox, and Rockies! I love the Padres to make the postseason as a second-half futures bet.' Please bet responsibly. Padres Outfield Trade Rumors Heating Up As Deadline Approaches

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Diego Padres have a massive hole in left field. Fernando Tatis Jr. mans right field with superstar potential. Jackson Merrill is one of the best young center fielders in baseball. But left field has been a revolving door of below-average play in San Diego. Because of this, the Padres have been linked to numerous big trades to fill that void. The most common name mentioned closely with San Diego is Boston Red Sox star Jarren Duran, but it's unclear if there's anything brewing between the two teams. If that idea falls through, ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Padres as one of the "best fits" in a trade for Cleveland Guardians star Steven Kwan. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Brandon Lowe #8 of the Tampa Bay Rays and Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians look on prior to the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15,... ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 15: Brandon Lowe #8 of the Tampa Bay Rays and Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians look on prior to the MLB All-Star Game at Truist Park on July 15, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images "An All-Star the past two years and Gold Glove winner in all three of his previous big league seasons, Kwan is a do-everything left fielder with elite bat-to-ball skills and two years of club control after 2025," Passan wrote. "Cleveland doesn't want to deal him, but with a dearth of available bats, the Guardians at the very least will listen to see whether teams are willing to blow them away with offers." It's unclear whether the Guardians are looking to trade Kwan this year, but if they are, it would likely take a large haul to land him. The Padres have a few top prospects who are likely untouchable, but beyond the top two or three prospects, San Diego could move anybody to land Kwan. This idea could make sense if the Padres are willing to give up multiple star prospects, but it doesn't make as much sense as a trade for Duran. The Guardians don't have much reason to trade Kwan, considering he has multiple years of affordable team control left on his deal. Padres Named 'Best Fit' for Braves Slugger Marcell Ozuna at Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Atlanta Braves are reportedly looking to move all of their expiring contracts at the trade deadline, including designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. As the Braves have all but fallen out of the playoff race, MLB insider Jeff Passan believes the Padres are one of the teams that should be pursuing Ozuna too boost their chances of a deep playoff run. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JULY 09: Marcell Ozuna #20 of the Atlanta Braves runs to third base at Sutter Health Park on July 09, 2025 in Sacramento, California."Ozuna is a stone-cold DH, playing two games in the field in 2023 as his last regular-season experience defensively," wrote Passan. "Ozuna is also in a contract year, but his power numbers are down a notch from his standout .302 average and 39-homer performance last season. His on-base percentage remains among the highest of potential trade candidates. If anyone is moving from Atlanta, he's the likeliest candidate, with free agency beckoning." The Padres have struggled to find consistency this season at the DH spot, so Ozuna would slot into the lineup right away for San Diego. Entering Monday, Ozuna was hitting .235 with 13 home runs, 42 RBI and an OPS+ of 112 despite some recent struggles. "Best fits: San Diego, Seattle, Texas, Detroit, San Francisco," wrote Passan. General manager A.J. Preller has shown in the past that he'll do whatever it takes to make his team as strong as possible heading into the final two months of the regular season and playoffs. He's been creative about it in the past, and he will find new ways this year as well. One aspect that works in the Padres' favor is that Ozuna is a rental, so they will not have to send back as much to Atlanta as they would for a bat with even just an extra year of control. If Ozuna hits well for San Diego, Preller could look to re-sign him in the offseason. More MLB: Yankees' Pursuit of Third Baseman Eugenio Suarez Ramps Up Ahead of Deadline
