Priests stage hunger strike demanding tetrapod sea wall to protect Kannamaly-Fort Kochi coastline

The Hindu20-06-2025
Priests under the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses staged a hunger strike near the BOT Bridge at Thoppumpady on Friday demanding that the government allocate funds to construct a tetrapod sea wall to protect the Puthenthodu (in Kannamaly)-Fort Kochi coastline where sea incursion has become common.
This comes in the wake of damage to houses due to rampant sea incursion in the region and also the perilous life that residents there lead. The agitation that began at 10 a.m. concluded by 5 p.m. The priests demanded urgent allocation of funds and steps to construct a sea wall in the corridor on a war footing, taking into account the grave threat to the life of residents.
Hundreds of coastal residents and others participated in two rallies, one from Palluruthy and another from Thoppumpady, which was taken out on Friday evening to the venue of the hunger strike. The rallies were flagged off by secretary general of Kerala Catholic Bishops' Council (KCBC) Fr. Thomas Tharayil and State president of Kerala Latin Catholic Association (KLCA) Sherry J. Thomas. Director of Kripasanam Fr. V.P. Joseph Valiyaveetil inaugurated a rally that was taken out by the agitating priests from Thoppumpady to the venue of the fast in the morning.
The hunger strike and other agitations are being mainly led by the Kannamaly-based Care Chellanam-Kochi, an NGO. The rampant sea incursion and the subsequent inundation of houses and other buildings began following the destruction of a sea wall that had been built there, following the Okhi Cyclone in 2017. A slew of agitations followed, and the government allotted ₹340 crore to build a 12-km-long sea wall northward from the Chellanam fishing harbour. But the sea wall was built only on a 7.35-km stretch, leaving the rest of the stretch all the way up to Fort Kochi vulnerable to sea incursion. The net result was that people were even unable to sleep in peace, the NGO said in a release.
With the government not taking steps to build rest of the sea wall as had been promised, the Alappuzha and Kochi dioceses decided to mobilise the affected coastal residents and intensify their agitation, beginning with the hunger strike. Friday's fast was inaugurated by Joseph Jude, vice president of Kerala Region Latin Catholic Council (KRLCC). Socio-political leaders and people from different walks of life addressed the agitating priests.
The valedictory of the agitation was inaugurated by Bishop of Kottapuram Ambrose Puthenveetil.

Mamata cites Human Rights Watch report; slams alleged 'illegal deportation' of Bengali-Muslims in BJP-ruled states

KOLKATA: Referring to a report by New York-based international human rights organisation Human Rights Watch (HRW), West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday strongly criticised the alleged deportation of Bengali-speaking Muslims from India without due process, calling it a "shame" for the country. "The internationally reputed and New York-based multi-country NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) has also now highlighted the issue of harassment, persecution, and illegal deportation of Bengali-speaking people of India by the BJP governments in various states," Banerjee posted on X. "The human rights organisation has released a report saying what we have been saying: Bengali-speaking Indians (of different castes and communities) are being arbitrarily abused and pushed out in a concerted manner by the BJP establishment," the CM added.

Also read: Editorial: Healing Manipur: on Manipur and President's Rule Mr. Bhalla was speaking at an event in Imphal organised to commemorate the 26th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas. "Many have lost their lives and thousands have become homeless in the ethnic violence in Manipur. The government has taken various steps to resolve the crisis and restore peace and confidence. Joint operations of combined teams of state police and armed forces have been able to recover numerous firearms and ammunition over the past few months. "Peace and normalcy are returning to the state with the collaborative efforts of the government, armed forces and civil society organisations. Numerous insurgents involved in extortion, including cyber-facilitated schemes and funding militia groups, have been arrested during intensified crackdowns in recent months," he said. Manipur Police have launched an anti-extortion cell and confidential helpline bringing together state police, CAPFs, Assam Rifles and Army to streamline complaints and protect citizens from unlawful demands, he added. Multiple checkpoints have been strategically established across the hill and valley districts, on the national highways, to ensure essential supplies of food and medicines. These combined efforts alongside community outreach are steadily dismantling armed networks, curbing extortion and restoring civil order, the Governor added. "Further, several initiatives are being taken to ensure the displaced people regain hope and skills. Dialogue is underway with civil society organisations from Meitei, Kuki-Zo and Naga communities for voluntary resettlement of internally displaced persons (IDPs) and inclusive safety guarantees," Mr. Bhalla said. Manipur has been under the President's rule since February 13 this year after Chief Minister N. Biren Singh resigned from his post and the assembly was put under animated suspension. More than 260 people have been killed and thousands rendered homeless in ethnic violence between Imphal Valley-based Meiteis and adjoining hills-based Kukis in Manipur since May, 2023.

‘Surreal Day': Indian-Origin Man Who Served Chai To PM Modi, Keir Starmer In UK

Last Updated: Akhil Patel served his handmade Indian tea to two world leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, at Chequers. It was a day London-based tea entrepreneur Akhil Patel will never forget. The founder of Amala Chai found himself at the centre of a surreal moment where he served his handmade Indian tea to two world leaders, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, at Chequers. Akhil Patel was invited to Chequers, the British Prime Minister's official country residence, as part of an event celebrating the UK-India free trade partnership. The gathering brought together senior ministers from both countries. In an Instagram post shared on Amala Chai's official page, Akhil described the moment as 'surreal." He said, 'Yesterday, I got invited by Downing Street's Chequers to celebrate the UK-India free trade deal. As one of the few selected brands there, little did I know I'd be serving chai to huge UK and Indian ministers and Modi and Starmer." Before meeting the heads of state, Akhil first served chai to several senior leaders, including UK Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds, Health Secretary Wes Streeting and Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also stopped by his stall for a cup. 'They were loving it. Coming back for multiple cups," he said. According to Akhil, the most unforgettable part of the day was yet to come. 'Then the big boys started coming my way," he wrote, referring to Prime Ministers Modi and Starmer. He recounted how both leaders casually walked over to his stall, stood right in front of him and asked for a cup of chai. As he handed over the tea, he said, 'From one chaiwala to another," a remark that not only acknowledged PM Modi's well-known past as a tea seller but also brought laughter from both leaders. 'Possibly one of the craziest moments in my life. I just served chai to Modi and Starmer, and Starmer loved it," he added. Who Is Akhil Patel? Akhil Patel is a British citizen of Indian origin who grew up in London. He studied at University College School, Hampstead, and later earned a BSc degree in Management from the London School of Economics (LSE). After a brief stint as a data analyst, he took a different path in 2019. Inspired by his grandmother's traditional recipe, he founded Amala Chai. The brand focuses on authenticity and ethical sourcing. Akhil travelled across India from Assam's tea estates to Kerala's spice farms to directly connect with small family-run growers. By removing middlemen, the brand ensures both fair trade and high quality. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 16:28 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
