Intel plans to slash up to 200 Irish jobs at Leixlip plant
Intel plans to slash up to 200 jobs at its Leixlip, Co Kildare plant, it has emerged.
The company is undergoing major plans to restructure and intends to make 195 mandatory redundancies in the Irish location. They currently employ almost 5,000 people there.
The Irish Times reports that under five per cent of the workforce in Leixlip will be cut, under expectations that up to 20% of roles could go. A consultative period is expected when the announcement is made to staff, with roles identified by September.
Last year, Intel slashed 15,000 jobs in a round of redundancies announced in August as part of a $10 billion cost-reduction plan introduced by new Chief Executive Officer Lip-Bu Tan. Intel had 108,900 employees at the end of 2024, which was down from 124,800 in 2023.
Last month, Reuters reported that Mr Tan was contemplating bringing in major changes to the company's chip manufacturing methods and artificial intelligence strategies. This move would involve revising the firm's AI strategy and cutting jobs to tackle what Mr Tan called a slow-moving and bloated middle management layer.

"We have to ensure that people do not get a lower payment under a new system than they are currently getting. "That could be an unintended consequence of some of the work we have seen today." A policy paper is currently being worked on to set out the options ahead of the budget. Calleary vowed that any changes made to the social welfare system will be targeted and "focused on those most at risk" of poverty and those in consistent poverty.
