Dolphins re-sign 4 players just as free agency begins
The Miami Dolphins announced new contracts for four of their players who were set to become free agents Wednesday afternoon.
New deals for safety Elijah Campbell and outside linebacker Quinton Bell were already reported ahead of the start of the new league year. Those two were joined by offensive lineman Jackson Carman and wide receiver Dee Eskridge.
Carman, 25, was a Bengals second-round pick in 2021, but joined the Dolphins practice squad in September 2024 not long after he was waived by Cincinnati. Miami moved him to the active roster in December and Carman appeared in eight games. He was the Dolphins' starting right tackle in a Week 15 game against the Houston Texans.
Eskridge, 27, was also taken in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft -- 10 selections after Carman. The Seattle Seahawks waived the receiver and returner at the end of training camp, and he landed on the Dolphins' practice squad not long after. Eskridge was moved to the active roster in October and finished the season with three receptions for 44 yards in six games played.
The terms of the deals to retain Carman and Eskridge haven't been reported or announced.

Dolphins may 'feel the most pressure to cave' to 2nd-rounder's contract demands

The Miami Dolphins signed seven of their eight 2025 NFL draft picks back in May, but with training camp set to start, they're still waiting for one more rookie to sign. Barring a last-minute contract breakthrough, offensive lineman Jonah Savaiinaea is set to officially become a holdout when rookies report to camp Tuesday. The issue isn't really Savaiinaea's fault nor does it fall on the Dolphins' shoulders. Almost every team is still working to get a second-round pick under contract after the Cleveland Browns and Houston Texans dished out fully guaranteed deals to the No. 33 and 34 overall selections, Carson Schwesinger and Jayden Higgins. Now there's a standoff between second-round picks who want a fully guaranteed contract of their own and teams that are hoping to avoid setting a precedent that can't be undone. So who will blink first? One analyst thinks the Dolphins may "feel the most pressure to cave" to Savaiinaea's demands sooner rather than later. "Savaiinaea, who is one-half of the team's offensive guard overhaul with veteran James Daniels, needs to be ready to roll when the season starts," Kyle Crabbs of A to Z Sports wrote Monday. "Missing time with an official holdout over a few million dollars off a rookie contract isn't the hill this team should be willing to die on relative to the opportunity cost of grooming Jonah to be an asset up front." While the Dolphins' starting lineup will be sorted out in camp, there's not much mystery about Savaiinaea's role up front. After Miami allowed Robert Jones and Isaiah Wynn to exit in free agency, it seems a no-brainer that the second-round pick will take over one of the starting guard roles with free agency addition James Daniels taking the other. Before the draft, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier made it clear that the team needed to find players prepared to contribute right away. "We're going to need NFL-ready players," Grier said in April. "There's no like, 'Hey, let's hope this guy is ready.' These guys are going to be forced into play." Savaiinaea's readiness will go a long way toward determining if the Dolphins can get back to the offensive explosiveness that defined the first two years of Mike McDaniel's tenure with the team. And that could mean Miami doesn't have the luxury of playing hardball with the contract holdout.

Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa receiving votes from NFL execs as top-10 QB

As 2025 NFL training camps approach, ESPN polled league executives, coaches and scouts to rank the NFL's top 10 quarterbacks. Though he finds himself outside the top 10 and honorable mention section, Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was among those receiving votes. Tagovailoa joins a group of NFL signal-callers that includes Kyler Murray, Brock Purdy, Dak Prescott, Aaron Rodgers and Bo Nix in the receiving votes category. Both Houston's C.J. Stroud and Green Bay's Jordan Love earned honorable mention status. While some may jeer at Tagovailoa's inclusion among the receiving votes category, it's an indication of the respect that Tagovailoa does garner from opposing front offices across the NFL. Tagovailoa was an honorable mention choice on this list a year ago headed into the 2024 season. As has been written or spoken about so often with Tagovailoa, injuries continue to hold the 27-year-old back. Tagovailoa has played in and started every game of an NFL season just once during his five-year professional career thus far. That came during the 2023 campaign. The 2023 season is also the only season in which Tagovailoa has played in more than 13 games. On the bright side, Tagovailoa led the league in passing in 2023 and notched his lone Pro Bowl nod thus far. Tagovailoa passed for 4,624 yards and 29 touchdowns during the 2023 campaign. In 11 games in 2024, Tagovailoa threw for 2,867 yards and 19 touchdowns against seven interceptions. The Dolphins were 6-5 in games that Tagovailoa started last season and are 38-24 with Tagovailoa across his 62 NFL starts to date. Per the input from league execs, coaches and scouts, the NFL's top five quarterbacks are Patrick Mahomes at No. 1, Josh Allen at No. 2, Joe Burrow at No. 3, Lamar Jackson at No. 4 and Jayden Daniels at No. 5. Matthew Stafford (No. 6), Justin Herbert (No. 7), Jared Goff (No. 8), Jalen Hurts (No. 9) and Baker Mayfield (No. 10) round out the top 10 quarterbacks.

Dolphins draft rewind: Miami boosts DL with Michigan DT Kenneth Grant

With the No. 13 overall selection, the Miami Dolphins selected Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft. The 6-foot-3, 331-pound defensive tackle arrives in South Beach with expectations aplenty. Grant was a third-team All-American in 2024 with Michigan after tallying 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks, five pass breakups and 32 tackles. Grant notched five tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks during the 2023 campaign in Ann Arbor en route to second-team All-Big Ten honors that season. The nose tackle is expected to help morph the Dolphins' run defense straight away. Will he continue to fine-tune his pass-rushing acumen as well? Let's revisit the Dolphins' first-round choice, the reaction to the selection of Grant and what we've heard since: Miami Dolphins DT Kenneth Grant Stats: 69 tackles, 11.5 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, 1 interception in 41 games played What the Dolphins said after drafting Kenneth Grant "I think the most exciting part of really adding him is you love players that are good players that make other people better players and continue to ascend to have the desire to be great. I think (he) affects the run game, affects the pass game, affects the pocket. You talk about some of the biggest impacts in the National Football League on pass downs is where the line of scrimmage is set or how much pocket push you can get. "That in conjunction with some of the things that we'll be able to do from a defensive standpoint based upon utilizing the skill set in the run game as well where you can play various light boxes at times and have versatility, as well as a guy that can draw some attention from some other really good players. Either way, we feel like if you can add really good players on the line of scrimmage, if we had the opportunity, we were really excited about that and we jumped on this on with elation," Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said of selecting Grant in April. Kenneth Grant's comments on joining the Dolphins "I fit in great. It's a similar, kind of the same scheme as my previous school. Some things are a little bit different, but I think I can wreak havoc in the backfield, run and pass game. Draw attention so another teammate, now Zach Sieler, gets some sacks and I'll still too," Grant said. Who Kenneth Grant may emulate in the NFL During his time at the NFL Combine, Grant shared a pair of potential NFL comparisons for himself. "I think Vita Vea, he's just a wrecking ball. He causes havoc in the backfield. Dexter Lawrence, great technique. He also comes of the ball in the one technique, zero technique. I think I got a little mixture of everybody, to be honest. I can do everything," Grant said. How NFL experts graded the Kenneth Grant selection A number of NFL experts shared their grades and thoughts on the Dolphins drafting Grant. While opinions varied, CBS Sports' Pete Prisco was among those that really liked the pick by Miami. Prisco awarded a B+ grade for the Dolphins' selection. "The Dolphins had to get an interior defensive lineman and Grant fits in perfectly. He is a big, power player who can line up next to Zach Sieler. I like this pick for a team desperate for defensive line help." Dolphins' mandatory minicamp update Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel updated Grant's progress during Miami's June mandatory minicamp. "First and foremost out the gate, it was early on, I could tell he had the respect and regard of his veteran teammates by the little things that he does understanding the importance of his role on the team. He came in with a veteran-like understanding of needing to be 100 percent on what he's asked to do – his technique and fundamentals – and he works endlessly. "So you're hitting a home run with the team when a first-round draft pick comes in with that mindset so we can work with that and veterans know you can count on that. There's been ebbs and flows like for every rookie, but what I've seen from him, I've seen early-down production where he wins based on technique and fundamentals early in the snap, and I've seen late-down wins where he's straining and utilizing grit and finish to make plays as well. He's got a lot of work to do. Every day is important. However, super happy that he's on our team and not somebody else's, and I know a lot of players that share the locker room with him would agree with that, too," McDaniel said.
