Cooper Hummel's HR breaks up pitching duel, Astros edge Phillies

Reuters4 days ago

June 25 - Cooper Hummel slugged an opposite-field home run in the bottom of the eighth inning, and the host Houston Astros claimed a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the opener of a three-game interleague series on Tuesday.
Hummel ruined the shutout bid of Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez (6-2) with his second home run this season. He drilled a 3-2 cutter 390 feet into the home bullpen in right-center field to break the scoreless tie.
Astros closer Josh Hader recorded his 20th save in the ninth. Astros reliever Bryan Abreu (2-3) earned the win with a perfect eighth.
Suarez was exceptional. He needed only 27 pitches to complete one trip through the Houston lineup and didn't allow a baserunner until he issued a one-out walk to Isaac Paredes in the fourth. Suarez followed by snagging a soft liner from Jose Altuve before doubling Paredes off first.
The Astros fashioned a serious threat in the sixth when Yainer Diaz and Hummel opened that frame with back-to-back hits. Suarez responded by inducing Mauricio Dubon to roll into a double play, and he stranded runners on the corners with a called third strike against Paredes. Suarez stranded another runner in the seventh and returned for the eighth with 91 pitches on his ledger.
His 99th pitch of the game was his undoing. Suarez allowed one run on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over 7 2/3 innings.
Astros left-hander Framber Valdez matched zeroes with Suarez before departing after the seventh.
Valdez worked around two baserunners in the top of the first and stranded two more in the second. He walked Kyle Schwarber to open the third but erased him by inducing the first of two inning-ending double plays, this one off the bat of Nick Castellanos.
In the fourth, Valdez found himself in another pickle when Edmundo Sosa smacked a one-out double to left immediately after Otto Kemp reached on a fielding error by Christian Walker at first base. But Valdez again buckled down to strand a pair and keep his shutout bid intact.
The fifth inning was the only frame in which Valdez retired the side in order. He got Sosa to ground into an inning-ending double play in the sixth and stranded Trea Turner in the seventh by getting Schwarber to roll a harmless ground ball to Dubon at second.
Valdez allowed four hits and four walks with three strikeouts over seven scoreless innings.

Emma Raducanu issues telling four-word response after being quizzed on Carlos Alcaraz relationship as romance rumours intensify

Emma Raducanu has finally addressed rumours surrounding her off-court connection with Carlos Alcaraz. The pair are due to partner in doubles at the US Open in August, but speculation about a possible bond beyond the tennis court has grown after Raducanu was seen supporting the Spanish star at the Queen's Club Championships earlier this month. Raducanu was seen supporting Alcaraz last Thursday and Saturday, sparking talk around Queen's that there might be 'something going on between them', as the pair were spotted laughing and joking together and arriving at the venue just minutes apart. Their most recent link-up came this week, with Alcaraz being confirmed as the latest global ambassador of Evian ahead of Wimbledon - the tournament's official water supplier since 2008. Raducanu also works with Evian, her collaborative work starting after she became the hottest property in British sport by winning the US Open in 2021, which led to her signing lucrative deals with the likes of Nike and Christian Dior. When asked whether they had discussed tactics for the US Open during the Evian event, the British No 1 said: 'No, it was fun yesterday. We were both on court with Evian. 'Yeah, we were just getting some volley practicing ahead of New York. Yeah, I'm really happy obviously to be playing with him. Yeah, we had a good time yesterday.' Later in the press conference, Raducanu was inevitably asked about the romance rumours, to which she smiled and said: 'We're just good friends.' The interview moderator then cut off further questions, prompting Raducanu to laugh and remark: 'Way to wrap up!' The two US Open champions - Raducanu won in 2021, Alcaraz a year later - are good friends, growing up together on the tour. 'He's so nice, very happy, amazing values and just a really positive light to be around,' said Raducanu about Alcaraz when asked how their bond began. 'I've known him for years. Wimbledon 2021 was the first time I started getting to know him. He was always playing the day before me, I would see him win and then I would have motivation to win and get myself into that position too. 'It was really cool to go through that tournament together and then I kept going through the US Open, we were staying in touch for the whole time and, yeah, it's nice. 'We have a good relationship still. He's obviously overtaken me a lot, but it's nice that we have that from a while ago.' Alcaraz, also 22, told Mail Sport at Queen's that Raducanu made him wait before agreeing to team up. 'Gotta keep them on their toes!' Raducanu joked. 'I had to ask my team if they thought I should play, but when he asked me, I was going to say yes, I just had to go through the formality of asking my coach.' Ahead of Wimbledon, Alcaraz clinched his second Queen's Club title with a thrilling 7–5, 6–7(5), 6–2 win over Jiri Lehecka last Sunday.

Tom Brady lifts the lid on his Las Vegas Raiders role after NFL skepticism

The addition of Tom Brady to the ownership board of the Las Vegas Raiders led to many raised eyebrows across the league. Now, the former champion is clarifying his role. Brady, the seven-time Super Bowl champion, had a deal finalized last year to join the team's ownership group under majority owner Mark Davis. However, it came after Brady agreed to being a color commentator for Fox Sports - which would typically give him access to privileged information from players and coaches to use on broadcasts. This could, in theory, have given Brady an unfair advantage. But now, in an interview with Paul Gutierrez on the Raiders' team website, Brady downplayed his role within the organization. 'Well, I'm just a limited partner, so Mark's the boss,' Brady said in an interview with Paul Gutierrez of the team's website. 'And then [head coach] Pete [Carroll] does his job and Spy [GM John Spytek] does his job and, I think, we trust them to make the right decisions. 'I'm there as a great sounding board for anything they want to do.' What remains to be known is Brady's day-to-day with the team, with the former Patriots and Buccaneers quarterback not revealing what he does daily. Brady re-iterated that he is 'just trying to contribute in the ways that I can to help the team be the best they can be, on and off the field' while praising the staff in the franchise 'We've got a great group of people. I love Mark. He's done an incredible job getting the team to Vegas, getting the stadium built. 'Pete is new this year; he's got a big role to play,' Brady added. 'And so does John Spytek. And we're trying to do the right things every day. So that's what we're trying to do.' He also gave insight into the working relationship between Carroll, a Super Bowl winning coach with five decades of experience, and Spytek, a longtime scout and executive in his first GM role. 'They've worked together very well, and there's a lot of decisions that are made,' Brady said. 'Winning games in September starts with what happens in February, March, and April, when no one's really watching. They've been hard at work. 'And our goal is to, you know, win a lot of football games. You've got to work hard at it, and it's all earned, and we've got a tough division. There's a lot of good opponents we face. But it's going to be up to the guys and their daily commitment to doing the right things.' Last season, the Raiders went 4-13 in a hyper-competitive AFC West division.
