Alex de Minaur's fiancée Katie Boulter details ‘awful' online abuse

Perth Now17-06-2025

Alex de Minaur has supported his British fiancee and fellow tennis star Katie Boulter after she opened up on the social media abuse she receives.
Boulter shared her experiences with BBC Sport to highlight the issue of players receiving toxic messages online.
The 28-year-old's examples included a message telling her to buy 'candles and a coffin for your entire family' with a reference to her 'grandmother's grave if she's not dead by tomorrow', one stating she should 'go to hell' as she had cost the poster money, and another stating 'hope you get cancer'.
Boulter said: 'I just wonder who the person is that has sent that. I don't think it's something that I would ever say to my worst enemy. It's just an awful, awful thing to say to anyone. It's horrible.
'It shows how vulnerable we are. You really don't know if this person is on site. You really don't know if they're nearby or if they know where you live or anything like that.'
'It's great for her to step up and shine a light into this, which is something that happens to every single tennis player out there. Every single athlete, I would say,' said de Minaur.
'Hopefully there is something that can be done about it. It's something that's been going on for a while now. It's something that a lot of people have spoken out against, but it doesn't change.
Boulter believes much of the abuse comes from gamblers who have lost money and de Minaur, speaking his his surprise defeat to Jiri Lehecka at Queen's, agreed.
'When you lose, you're feeling not in the best state emotionally, but then you've also got to deal with everything that happens behind the scenes with angry gamblers. British tennis star Katie Boulter has revealed the impact social media abuse can have on players. Credit: AAP
'I haven't gone on my social media yet, but I'm sure I'll have a lot of people not too happy with my result today.
'Every single tennis player on the tour gets thousands, millions of messages every time they lose a match or they cost someone money betting on them. So it's something that you've gotten used to.
'I would love for it to be dealt with or fixed somehow, but I'm not too sure what's the answer.'
The WTA and International Tennis Federation on Tuesday published their first report into online abuse of players after the launch of the Threat Matrix service last January.
The report reveals 1.6million posts and comments were analysed, with around 8,000 directed at 458 players identified as abusive, violent or threatening.
Five players received 26 per cent of the total abuse, while 40 per cent of the messages were identified as coming from angry gamblers.
Fifteen accounts have been identified to law enforcement because of the serious and prolific nature of the messages, while details have been shared with security teams at tennis events to prevent individuals accessing venues.

Norris cuts Piastri's lead with perfect win in Austria

Oscar Piastri's lead at the top of the world championship has been cut by seven points after the Australian followed home McLaren team-mate Lando Norris at a sun-scorched Austrian Grand Prix. It was redemption for Norris, who had been widely criticised after an attempt to pass Piastri at the Canadian Grand Prix earlier this month ended in a collision and his retirement from the race. The British driver scarcely put a wheel wrong across the weekend at Spielberg, taking pole position before resisting every challenge from Piastri in Sunday's race. Piastri now holds a 15-point lead over Norris after 11 of the 24 rounds, with the Briton preparing to put on a show on home tarmac at the British Grand Prix next weekend, where he will be aiming for his fourth win of the campaign. Charles Leclerc completed the podium for Ferrari, with teammate Lewis Hamilton fourth and George Russell fifth for Mercedes. Red Bull's four-times world champion Max Verstappen suffered his first retirement of the season, in his team's home race, after a first-lap collision with Mercedes' Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli. There was drama when the start of the race had to be aborted after Williams driver Carlos Sainz failed to get away during the formation lap. The race started after a 20-minute delay with all eyes on the battle up front between the McLaren pair. Piastri briefly inched ahead on lap 11 only for Norris to snatch back the lead almost immediately. It was nip-and-tuck before Piastri attempted a banzai dive at turn four on lap 20. Piastri locked his front-right tyre and came agonisingly close to sliding into Norris' car. McLaren promptly hauled in Norris for his first of two tyre changes. Piastri, perhaps as punishment, was left out on track with a flat-spotted tyre for four additional laps and was losing time, a signal that McLaren had seen enough. By the time Piastri emerged from his stop, Norris was six seconds up the road. "The feedback from the pit-wall was that the move into turn four was too marginal and we can't do that again," Piastri was told by his race engineer, Tom Stallard. Norris came in for his second stop with 18 laps remaining with a three-second lead. Piastri would stop the next time around and was then forced to take to the grass as he attempted to lap Alpine's Franco Colapinto in 14th. Piastri continued his charge and with 10 laps to go was back within two seconds. "I need some pace," Norris said. "Please help." But Piastri would not get a sniff as Norris took the chequered flag for his seventh career win 2.7 seconds clear. Norris said: "We had a great battle, that's for sure. It was a lot of fun, a lot of stress, but a nice battle. It was tricky, hot and tiring, but the perfect result as a team." Piastri said on the radio: "Sorry for my move at turn four, that was my bad." He added: "I tried my absolute best and I probably could have done a better job when I momentarily got ahead. "It was a bit on the edge, and I might have pushed a bit too far, but it was a good race and that is what we are here to do, to race each other and fight for wins." With PA

Maya Joint wins Eastbourne title in lead-up to Wimbledon 2025

History repeated for her with another pre-grand slam title, but the American-born teenager plans on hanging around a little longer at the All England Club. The draw did Joint no favours, with 19th-seeded Russian Liudmila Samsonova waiting for her. 'I think this time is a tiny bit different. I get one more day of rest, and I'll just detach myself a little bit more from the last match and just focus on that match coming up,' Joint said. Joint with her trophy. Credit: Getty Images 'I took a look at the draw, so I know who I'm playing, but I've never played her before, so I don't know much about her.' Joint's graduation from grasscourt novice was as swift as her rise into the world's top 50. She lost in the first round of Nottingham qualifying on grass last week to an opponent ranked outside the top 100, then reportedly struggled in practice with last year's winner Daria Kasatkina in Eastbourne before the tournament. 'She was a bit depressed on the practice,' Kasatkina said. Loading 'But everyone saw she also won the title in Rabat this year. She has great potential. She's also a very nice girl, a hard-working girl. She's got everything, and I'm happy for her having this success so early.' Joint, who switched allegiances to Australia two years ago, and Russian top-tenner Mirra Andreeva will be the only teenagers ranked in the WTA Tour's top 50 on Monday as she continues to set the standard for an emerging group of Australian women's players. Sixteen-year-old Emerson Jones is the world junior No.1 and lost in final-round qualifying for Wimbledon, while Talia Gibson, 21, went one better in booking her main draw debut at SW19. '[Maya]'s doing absolutely amazing right now, and I'm so incredibly happy for her, and it's so awesome to see the progress she's made, even in the last year,' Gibson said. 'I think it drives us all. We're such a close group of girls, and super supportive of each other – always having the chance to train with each other and push each other to the limit as well, so we're really lucky to have such an amazing group of girls. 'It's amazing to see how many of us are in the main draw, and I hope that continues for a long time to come still. It's really exciting for me to be here amongst it all for the first time.' Loading Meanwhile, No.20 seed Alexei Popyrin will headline eight Australians in action on the first day of Wimbledon on Monday, including Gibson, Olivia Gadecki, Chris O'Connell, Jordan Thompson, Ajla Tomljanovic, James Duckworth and Kim Birrell. After a slow start to the year and coaching change from Xavier Malisse to Wayne Ferreira, Popyrin is ready to build upon his career-best run to the round of 32 in London last year after making the last 16 at Roland-Garros. The 25-year-old brushed off a self-confessed case of 'impostor syndrome' to regain form. 'From the start of the claycourt season, I felt like I belonged [again],' Popyrin said. 'I know I've done the work. I know I've beaten players, and I deserve to be where I am right now … [but] it's easy to go down a little spiral when results aren't going your way, but from the claycourt season, it's been quite positive for myself.' Stars revealed to perform at Bezos' big wedding after-party

A major music star is set to headline the final celebration for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's lavish wedding weekend in Venice, Italy, capping off days of festivities with a high-energy dance party. The couple, who tied the knot in a black-tie ceremony on Friday, June 27, have lined up Usher and DJ Cassidy to perform at their last big bash on Saturday night, June 28, according to a source speaking to People Magazine. 'It's the culmination, the final big party,' the source told People, noting that the newlyweds wanted a night centred around music to send off their guests after a packed week of celebrations. It's the culmination, the final big party,' the source said. 'First night was dinner, second was the ceremony with Andrea Bocelli's son performing, and tonight's the full-on dance floor.' Cassidy, known for his star-studded party sets, has previously performed at events for Oprah, Kris Jenner, and Kourtney Kardashian, making him a favourite for the couple. Usher, another close friend, will also take the stage for the night's entertainment. The wedding festivities have drawn a who's who of celebrity guests, including Oprah Winfrey, Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Tom Brady. Despite concerns from some locals about disruptions, a source told People Magazine that Venice 'is still running as normal' even with the influx of high-profile visitors. 'Those who protest are in contradiction with the history of Venice, which is a history of relations, contacts and business,' the city's mayor Luigi Brugnaro told Reuters in an interview. 'Bezos embodies the Venetian mentality, he is more Venetian than the protesters,' said the mayor, adding that he hoped Bezos, who donated 3 million euros ($A5.4 million) to local institutions, would return to the city to do business. Brugnaro said Bezos had attached no conditions to holding his wedding celebrations in Venice, and City Hall had only learned about his donations after they had already been made.
