India's equity indices fall for fourth consecutive week amid weak earnings

Economic Times2 days ago
Mumbai: India's equity indices fell nearly 1% on Friday, marking their fourth straight week of losses, as weaker earnings from index heavyweights and subdued sentiment across Asian markets weighed on investor confidence.
ADVERTISEMENT The NSE Nifty fell 0.9%, or 225.1 points, to finish at 24,837.00. The BSE Sensex moved 0.8%, or 721.08 points, lower to close at 81,463.09. Both indices declined 0.5% and 0.4%, respectively, over the past five trading sessions.
"The fall in the markets today was largely due to bearish earnings by heavyweights like Nestle and Bajaj Finance, which indicate a slowdown in the consumer economy," said Pranay Aggarwal, director and CEO, Stoxkart. "There is also investor nervousness around the India-US trade deal."
Bajaj Finance fell almost 5%.
Corrective Phase It emerged as the biggest loser on the benchmark Nifty on Friday. Shriram Finance and IndusInd Bank fell 3.6% and 2.6%, respectively.
ADVERTISEMENT The Nifty PSU Bank Index dropped 1.7%, while the Bank Nifty shed 0.9%. The Nifty Metal and Nifty IT indices fell 1.6% and 1.4%, respectively. The Nifty Auto Index ended 1.3% lower. The Volatility Index, or VIX - the market's fear gauge - gained 5.2% to 11.3 on Friday, indicating traders expect higher risk in the near term.
ADVERTISEMENT Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong fell 1.1% while Japan and China declined 0.9% and 0.3%, respectively. Taiwan ended marginally lower and South Korea rose 0.2%.At home, the broader market bore the greater brunt of the weaker sentiment with the Nifty Mid-cap 150 and Small-cap 250 indices declining 1.6% and 2%, respectively, on Friday. Out of the 4,154 shares traded on the BSE, 1,061 advanced, while 2,969 declined. Over the past week, the mid-cap index shed 1.6%, while the small-cap index fell 3%.
ADVERTISEMENT Technical analysts said that stocks had run up significantly since April, and muted results by index heavyweights led to profit booking after the sharp rally.
"Overall, the market has been in a corrective phase in July - initially a time-wise correction that kept the markets in a tight range - but today the index decisively breached the key support level of 24,950, indicating that a price-wise correction is likely in the short term," said Ruchit Jain, head of technical research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services. "The 24,650 level is the next key mark that offers a good buying opportunity." In the last three months, the benchmark Nifty has gained 3.3%, while the Nifty Mid-cap and Small-cap indices have surged 9.2% and 12%, respectively.

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) sold shares worth a net Rs 1,980 crore on Friday. Their domestic counterparts purchased shares worth Rs 2,138.6 crore. In July, overseas investors divested Rs 22,288 crore."The benchmark gained significantly between April and June, unlike in prior periods when July typically ended on a positive note," said Jain. "This prior outperformance and the ongoing correction suggest that July is likely to close lower, despite being a seasonally strong month."Jain added that investors could consider buying on dips from a medium-term perspective, as these are corrections within a broader uptrend.Aggarwal said the tariff on India is unlikely to be higher than that on China or Vietnam, and once the deal is finalised, the markets could rebound.
"Until further clarity emerges on the US-India trade deal, the markets are expected to remain sideways due to a lack of direction amid foreign selling," said Aggarwal. "The markets are expected to end lower in July, and this sideways movement could persist into next month."

Highways dept appeals Madras HC order to demolish two pillars of Avinashi road elevated flyover project

COIMBATORE: The Madras High Court ordered the Special Projects wing of the State Highways department officials (Coimbatore division) to demolish two pillars built for the ramps of the Avinashi Road elevated flyover project. The move comes after a landowner alleged that the construction of the pillars appears to favour a private star hotel on Avinashi Road. Meanwhile, the highways department has filed an appeal against the order. Justice Bharatha Chakravarthy observed that the pillars, originally spaced 30 metres apart, had been repositioned without structural justification. The judge ordered the demolition of the relocated pillars and reconstruction at the originally-sanctioned spots, citing risk to the structural integrity of the flyover. He also imposed a personal fine of Rs 1,000 each on two senior highways engineers, and directed that the relocated pillars be marked with the Tamil Nadu Government's motto "Vaaimaiye Vellum" (Truth Alone Triumphs), and be known as the "Pillars of Truth." The 10.1 km-long, Rs 1,621.3 crore flyover project, connecting Uppilipalayam and Goldwins, is one of Tamil Nadu's largest infrastructure undertakings. Originally, the project included five pedestrian subways at high-traffic points to ensure safe crossings under the flyover, as well as service roads to maintain access to properties alongside the corridor. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause and a member of the Coimbatore District Road Safety Committee filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the highways department for omitting key pedestrian infrastructure and a service road in the ongoing Avinashi Road elevated flyover project. The PIL, filed before the Madras High Court, flags the silent removal of five approved pedestrian subways and the dropping of a service road near a private hotel, both of which were part of the original sanctioned plans.

Weak momentum is likely to continue

Thebroader market selling pressure dragged the benchmark indices below the 25000 level. The Nifty declined by 131.40 points or 0.53 per cent. The BSE Sensex is down by 0.36 per cent. The Midcap-100 and Smallcap-100 indices slipped by 1.85 per cent and 3.51 per cent, respectively. The Nifty and Banknifty are up by 0.95 per cent and 0.44 per cent, respectively. The Media and Realty indices were the worst performers with 5.73 per cent and 4.93 per cent, respectively. The IT and FMCG indices are down by 4.09 per cent and 3.41 per cent, respectively. The India VIX is still at the lower band at 11.28. The FIIs sold Rs30,508.66 crore, and the DIIs bought Rs.39,825.97 crore worth of equities. The benchmark index continued to fall for the fourth consecutive week. It declined by 3.36 per cent from the recent high. As expected, the low VIX regime has led to a sharp decline in the benchmark index. The VIX rose by 7.39 per cent to 11.28 last week. Even after the last two days' surge in the VIX, it remains at the lower band, hinting at further decline. The Nifty closed below the previous low and 10-week average decisively. It declined by 0.90 per cent with higher volume in the past four weeks, which is a real caution for the bulls. Now, the index is 0.87 per cent below the 50 DMA. After oscillating around the 50-day moving average (DMA) for the last six days, it finally decisively broke it. It also broke the 50 EMA support. The nearest support is at the 23.6 per cent retracement level of the prior 12-week rally from 21743 to 25669, which is at 24743, which is just a hundred points away. The index is showing signs of ending its 12-week rally from April 2025 lows. It retraced 86 per cent of the Oct-April decline. It rose by 18.05 per cent from the April lows. Last week's decline with higher volume indicates a strong distribution. Last week's shooting star candle further confirms the distribution. In any case, the index fails to hold the 24742-545 zone of support, except that the decline will be prolonged to another three to four months and may test the 23243 level, or it may fill the gap areas from April 8. For an upside, it must form at least three higher high candles. The daily Bollinger bands are decisively in the downtrend. The MACD line is below the zero line. The RSI is at a crucial 40 support level. The 100EMA support is at 24576. The nearest major low is at 24473. If these supports are also breached, the market will enter into a decisive downtrend. On the upside, there are several resistance points. First, it must close above the prior day's high and the 10-week average. As the earnings season is disappointing, there are no leading stocks or sectors; the weakness may continue for some more time. As the fall is severe in the last two days, expect a technical bounce next week. It may attempt to recover from an oversold condition on a lower time frame.
