South Korea's convenience stores compete with ultra-cheap options as restaurant prices soar

SEOUL - As food prices keep climbing in South Korea, more people are reaching for ultra-cheap convenience foods to balance their everyday costs. Some of the most popular items now sell for less than 1,000 won (94 cents).
Convenience store chains like CU and GS25 are seeing a boom in low-cost, ready-to-eat items that appeal especially to students, office workers, and low-income families.
At CU, nearly one-third of all ready-made meal sales from January to April came from residential neighbourhoods, signalling that more consumers are swapping restaurants for affordable meals close to home.
The strongest growth is in ultra-cheap products. CU's private-label instant noodles, 'Deuktem Ramyeon'-which means 'lucky find' - sell for just 480 won per pack. That is roughly half the price of standard instant noodles.
Sales of the product jumped 37.5 per cent in the first three weeks of June compared to the same period in 2024.
At GS25, another major chain, sales of items priced under 1,000 won have risen sharply for three consecutive years, including a 46.5 per cent increase in 2024.
Retailers are also expanding into budget milk, eggs, and ready-made rice. Earlier in June, GS25 introduced 'Hyeja Baekmibap', a 1,000-won microwavable rice bowl. 'Hyeja' is Korean slang for items that deliver more value than expected for their price.
To maintain low prices without sacrificing quality, retailers are adopting a strategy known as 'reverse development', in which the final price is set first, and the product is developed within that limit. GS25's Hyeja Baekmibap was created under this model to meet the fixed 1,000-won price point.
CU has followed a similar path, releasing milk drinks priced at 880 won and 'Deuktem Eggs', a 15-egg pack priced at 4,900 won.
BGF Retail reports that sales of Deuktem Eggs rose 31.5 per cent in June, as national egg prices continue to climb.
The broader economic context helps explain the shift. The Bank of Korea reports that since 2021, prices for daily necessities, including food and basic goods, have increased by 19.1 per cent.
That is significantly higher than the overall inflation rate of 15.9 per cent during the same period. The central bank identifies processed food costs as a key contributor to the gap.
Lower-income households have been hit especially hard. According to Statistics Korea, families in the bottom 20 per cent income bracket spent an average of 434,000 won per month on food in 2024, nearly 39 per cent more than five years ago.

China's weak factory activity maintains pressure for more stimulus as tariff risks weigh

PHOTO: AFP BEIJING - China's manufacturing activity shrank for a third straight month in June, though at a slower pace, as increases in new orders, purchasing volumes and supplier delivery times signalled that policy support rolled out since late 2024 is taking effect. But business sentiment remains subdued, the June 30 survey showed, with employment, factory gate prices and new export orders still languishing, and keeping alive calls for even more stimulus as authorities deal with US President Donald Trump's tariff onslaught and chronic weakness in the property sector. The National Bureau of Statistics purchasing managers' index (PMI) rose to 49.7 in June from 49.5 in May, matching the median forecast in a Reuters poll but remaining below the 50-mark that separates growth from contraction. 'Two months of successive improvement, that's a decent reading given June was the first full month without Trump's prohibitive 100 per cent-plus tariffs,' said Xu Tianchen, senior economist at the Economist Intelligence Unit. 'There is still evidence of front-loading in trade, but the tariffs are lower now and manufacturers are preparing to ship holiday season goods,' he added. The new export orders sub-index remained in contraction for a 14th straight month in June, inching up to 47.7 from 47.5 in May, while employment diverged from other indicators by deteriorating further. However, new domestic orders rose to 50.2 from 49.8, and purchasing volumes jumped from 47.6 to 50.2 – offering policymakers some hope that domestic demand may be starting to recover. Huang Zichun, China economist at Capital Economics, said the PMIs suggested the world's second-largest economy had regained some momentum over the past month, but warned tensions with the West would continue to squeeze its exports and there were still signs of deflationary pressures. The non-manufacturing PMI, which includes services and construction, grew to 50.5 from 50.3. Activity in the food and beverages, travel, hospitality and logistics sectors fell this month, NBS senior statistician Zhao Qinghe said in a statement. However, this drag was offset by a pickup in the construction PMI, which rose to a 3-month high of 52.8, Capital Economics' Mr Huang said. 'Fiscal support looks to have continued to support infrastructure spending,' Mr Huang added, but cautioned that 'a fading fiscal tailwind is likely to slow activity in the second half of the year.' Uncertainty also lingers among factory owners, as the business outlook index - which normally moves in line with the headline PMI - dropped in June and suggested producers were waiting on a more durable trade deal to a fragile framework agreed between Beijing and Washington earlier this month. That puts pressure on policymakers to roll out more support measures, as the government cannot afford for China's vast manufacturing sector to stagnate or shrink, if its ambitious 2025 growth target of 'around 5 per cent' is to be met. Policymakers are confident they can push ahead with reforms launched late in 2024 to transition China's economy from a manufacturing-led model to a consumer-driven one, Premier Li Qiang told delegates at World Economic Forum and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank meetings last week. Such a shift in the engines of growth, which economists say is crucial to securing China's future, could be progressed while maintaining strong growth, Premier Li said. But economists say the transition could take years, and that reform typically comes at the cost of a more subdued economy in the short term. 'Exports are expected to decelerate in the second half of the year, and domestic deflationary pressures will intensify,' said Dan Wang, China director at Eurasia Group, who expects more stimulus in coming months. 'Household consumption cannot be a real short-term driver, but fiscal spending in things like infrastructure can deliver the kind of growth required to hit this year's target.' Changes brewing: Global coffee chains struggle to adapt to Korea's cafe culture
June 30, 2025 SEOUL – Global coffee chains such as the US franchise Blue Bottle and Canada's Tim Hortons, are changing tack in Korea's cutthroat coffee market, where both appear to have muffed their attempts to localize their offerings. Blue Bottle, which entered Korea in 2019 touting its artisanal brewing rituals, has recently traded some of its signature slowness for speed. Its once-prized focus on customer interaction has lost some of its gravitas, now that it's available on local delivery apps like Baemin and Coupang Eats. Perks like size upgrades and app discounts only further blur the lines between craft and convenience. As of October last year, only five of its 17 locations offered delivery. That number has since doubled to 10. According to industry insiders, the shift risks diluting the brand's identity, though it seems a necessary concession to Korean consumer culture. 'Yet, in a market awash with cheap caffeine and fast service, its core values may be hard to maintain,' one insider said. While Blue Bottle's annual sales in Korea rose 17 percent on-year to 31.2 billion won ($22.6 million) last year, operating profit plunged to 200 million won, from 1.9 billion won the previous year and 2.7 billion won in 2021. The company also posted a net loss of 1.1 billion won, its first since entering the Korean market. Another notable entrant, Tim Hortons, which made its Korean debut in 2023, appears to be at a crossroads. In June, the chain shuttered its flagship store in Cheongna, Incheon, its first directly operated location to close. While speculation swirls around Tim Horton's financial struggles in Korea, the company cited a search for a more fitting location to reflect its Canadian roots. The backlash also stems from Tim Hortons' premium pricing strategy in Korea, where prices are 1.5 to 2 times higher than in Canada despite its reputation there for affordability and everyday value. For these newcomers, the hurdles are steeper in the face of fast-growing, budget-minded Korean chains like Mega Coffee, whose 2,000 won Americano delivers enough of a caffeine kick to stand up against Tim Hortons' 4,000 won and Blue Bottle's 5,900 won Americanos. This month, Tim Hortons launched a promotional campaign slashing prices on its signature Iced Capp by 60 percent and offering free Americano coupons to customers who purchased donuts, in a bid to reconnect with Korean consumers. When it comes to strategy, Starbucks, a dominant force in Korea's cafe scene, is an early mover in delivery, having launched the service in April last year. It continues to anchor customer loyalty by doubling down with expanded app rewards and discounts of up to 60 percent. 'Korean coffee consumers move fast and expect brands to keep pace,' said one industry official, urging global chains to stay agile and responsive to local demands. 'Striking the right balance between brand roots and local flavor is critical to success.' Korea's saturated and stratified coffee market indeed breeds stiff competition, in which cafe businesses at every tier are feeling the squeeze. According to Korea's National Tax Service, the number of coffee shops nationwide dipped to 95,337 in the first quarter, down 743 from a year earlier. It's the first recorded decline since the agency began tracking the figure in 2018.

'So we give Japan no cars. They won't take our cars, right? And yet we take millions and millions of their cars into the United States. It's not fair,' Mr Trump said during a Fox News interview that aired on June 29. 'And I explained that to Japan. And they understand it. And we have a big deficit with Japan. And they understand that too,' he said in remarks. 'Now, we have oil. They could take a lot of oil. They could take a lot of other things,' he added. Japan's top negotiator Ryosei Akazawa visited Washington DC last week for the seventh round of trade negotiations that have been ongoing for months, even extending his stay in hopes of hashing out a deal as the July 9 deadline for higher so-called reciprocal tariffs looms. In a statement released on June 29, the Japanese government said Mr Akazawa and his counterpart, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, had a 'fruitful discussion' and agreed to continue seeking a deal that is beneficial for both the US and Japan. It was unclear from Mr Trump's statements in the interview whether Japan was close to reaching a deal or winning an extended reprieve from a jump in the across-the-board tariffs. Mr Trump said the US can set its trade terms with Japan unilaterally. 'I'm going to send letters,' Mr Trump said on June 29, referring to a plan to inform some trading partners that the US will unilaterally set tariffs. 'I could send one to Japan.
