This humanoid robot from China can cartwheel, punch, and run, is cheaper than an EV

India Today4 days ago
A Chinese robotics company has caught the world's attention with the launch of a humanoid robot that can run, cartwheel, throw punches, and even perform backflips. The robot, called R1, has been created by Unitree Robotics and is priced at just CNY 39,999 or $5,900, which roughly translates to about Rs 5 lakh. That's less than a budget electric vehicle like a Tata Tiago EV and far cheaper than any other humanoid robot in the same league. With athletic moves and a sleek build, the R1 is being pitched as a 'sporty' robot, capable of pulling off complex stunts like a kip-up, handstand, and martial arts-style kicks. But while its flashy promo video has earned millions of views online, it has also sparked debates about what exactly a humanoid robot should be doing.advertisementThe Unitree R1 stands 121 cm or 4 feet tall, weighs 25 kg, and is powered by 26 joints that allow for a surprising range of motion. In the video released by Unitree, the R1 is seen flipping through the air, sprinting, and mimicking combat moves with impressive balance and coordination. For a robot in this price range, those abilities are quite rare. Most humanoids with comparable mobility cost several times more. Tesla's Optimus robot, still in early development, is expected to be priced under $20,000 (roughly Rs 17.4 lakh) — but only if it's produced at scale. Meanwhile, rival bots like UBTech's Walker S and EngineAI's PM01 are priced significantly higher, making the R1 the most affordable option for a dynamic humanoid.Of course, the aforementioned humanoids — apart from Tesla's Optimus — are all China-made, which begs the question: where does this leave India in the race? While the country is still making small moves in a game that's scaling fast, there has been some development. For instance, take Reliance. It has partnered with Addverb, a robotics company, and is building an India-made humanoid for industrial use. ISRO is building a half-humanoid astronaut called Vyommitra. DRDO recently announced work on defence-use humanoid robots. And startups like Vanar Robotics are prototyping service robots out of Indian cities. That said, this is a story for another time — because right now there's a bigger question: what's the point of a robot that can do flips and kicks if it can't handle basic household chores? That's what many people online have been asking.
Here's how some netizens reacted to the viral R1 video:One user questioned the robot's abilities with household chores, stating, 'Can it vacuum? Can it run the washing machine? Can it fold clothes? Can it iron? Can it cook? As a security robot, it seems interesting, but honestly, at the moment, it's not what interests me most.'Another user shared the same sentiment, stating, 'Are the hands developed enough to make breakfast, cook, make, mow the lawn?'One user did add a valid point by pointing out folks who are missing the whole point. The user writes, 'A lot of people ask if it can cook and clean. Completely missing the point of a cheap humanoid. At this price, it's A) a toy and B) a research tool; if you want to build out the software for a robot servant, then you need plentiful hardware for testing and development.'Another user posted, 'Very dubious that this represents real-world performance, today. But something like this will be common sooner than most think.'While the R1 may not be folding laundry anytime soon, for $5,900, it's one of the first humanoids that's financially within reach for researchers, hobbyists, and maybe even early adopters looking for more than just entertainment. The company, based in Hangzhou, is also preparing to go public soon and could become the first humanoid robotics firm to be listed on China's stock exchange.- Ends

Redditor Flies To Vietnam From India, Buys MacBook, Enjoys Vacation, Saves Rs 36,500

A Reddit user is being lauded for their smart financial planning, which helped them not only enjoy an 11-day trip to Vietnam but also purchase a MacBook at a lower price than in India. For years, Apple users in India have had to splurge extra money to buy MacBooks or iPhones due to a mixture of factors like high import fees, Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the premium pricing strategy. In the now viral post titled "I flew to Vietnam from India just to buy a MacBook", the user revealed that they had the idea to conduct this experiment, in the hope that they would be able to save some cash. "If you're planning to buy a MacBook or iPhone worth Rs 2 lakh+ in India trust me, it's worth making a short trip to Vietnam. You'll get the device cheaper and squeeze in a mini vacation," wrote the OP in the r/macoffer subreddit. The OP stated they booked the cheapest round-trip flight ticket and headed to Hanoi, where they worked remotely and also enjoyed touring the capital city. The user said they visited over 15 stores in nearby areas to buy the MacBook, whilst offering advice on what to look for when buying the laptop. "Always ask: "Do you provide VAT refund documents for the airport?" Some stores won't. They even helped me carefully open the MacBook to inspect it and resealed it for airport VAT refund smart move!" As per the OP, the MacBook was available for Rs 1.85 lakh in India with card offers but after receiving a VAT refund at the Vietnam airport, the same device cost them only Rs 1.48 lakh -- meaning a saving of Rs 36,500. "Net Savings on MacBook alone: Rs 36,500, So basically, add Rs 5K and you got yourself a brand-new MacBook and a vacation in Vietnam," wrote the user. "Final total I spent: MacBook + 11-day trip total: Rs 2,08,117 (before refund). After tax refund: Rs 1,97,000 approx. So if I deduct the cost of the MacBook alone, my 11-night Vietnam trip was just Rs 48K and that too while working!" See the viral post here: I flew to Vietnam from India just to buy a MacBook by u/Shuict in macoffer 'That's crazy' As the post went viral, garnering thousands of upvotes, the social media users appreciated the pointers provided by the OP, with many planning to embark upon similar trips. "Insightful. This is the kind of posts I am using Reddit for. Planning to buy the upcoming iphone, with a trip to Dubai or Vietnam," said one user while another added: "Dude that's crazy. To the very details you provide, it sounds doable." A third commented: "I have done the same thing around 2 Months ago Went to Vietnam bought MacBook Pro M4, Apple TV & iPhone 16PM." A fourth said: "You could have gotten it even cheaper with a student ID. Just ask some of your relatives for a student ID and you get around 20k off, plus cheaper Apple Care and free AirPods."

In this context, today, more than 34.85 lakh farmers in Odisha are being provided a total of 697 crore rupees," Majhi posted on X. Stating that the Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi or PM Kisan Yojana has been instrumental in making farmers progressive, Majhi said the programme integrates farmers into the mainstream of the economy. Live Events This scheme plays a significant role in the development of farmers and in reducing poverty, the chief minister said. He also said that over 34.85 lakh eligible farmers in Odisha received Rs 2,000 each, and a total of around Rs 697 crore was disbursed into their bank accounts. Asserting that the Odisha government has implemented many schemes for farmers within a year, Majhi said the cultivators are getting the benefits. More than 50 lakh farmers of the state are getting assistance of Rs 4,000 per year under the CM Kisan scheme. "It is a matter of happiness for us that the farmer brothers are getting assistance of Rs 10,000 per year by including PM Kisan and CM Kisan," he pointed out. He said the 20th instalment of PM Kisan Yojana was given for the period from April to July this year. The CM said that the country celebrates PM-Kisan Divas on August 2. Along with this, "PM-Kisan Divas" is also being celebrated in all the districts, blocks and panchayats of the state. On this occasion, awareness is also being created among the farmers about the qualifications required to be included in this scheme, the CM said. Stating that he wants all eligible farmers included in the PM Kisan scheme, Majhi said special programs or saturation drives have been launched in all the blocks of the state. "No eligible farmer should be left out of this scheme. You have now started the Kharif crop. This is an important scheme among the many schemes that the PM has made for you, in which you are getting direct financial assistance," Majhi said. The farmers should accelerate the process of diversification into other crops such as fish cultivation, animal husbandry and others, which will increase their yield and benefit them financially. "Your income in the agriculture sector will not only double but will increase manifold. The Prime Minister's target for this increase will be fulfilled," he said. Apart from this, the chief minister said that under the Samriddha Kisan Yojana , the state government is providing an additional input assistance of Rs 800 per quintal of paddy. Last year, in the Kharif season, the state assisted around Rs 6,000 crore to 17 lakh farmers. Similarly, in the Rabi season, more than Rs 1,600 crore was provided to more than 3 lakh farmers, he said. On this occasion, Deputy Chief Minister KV Singh Deo said as many as 34,85,881 farmers received Rs 697 crore under the PM Kisan scheme. The farmers will buy seeds and fertilisers with the money, he said, adding that the state government is trying to double their income. "We have increased the income of farmers by increasing the purchase price of paddy," the CM added.

Smartphone Revenues Surpass Record Rs 8.7 Lakh Crore In April-June Globally

New Delhi: The smartphone revenues worldwide grew 10 per cent (year-on-year) in the April-June quarter (Q2 2025) to exceed $100 billion (more than Rs 8.7 lakh crore) -- the highest level in a second calendar quarter to date, according to a new report. In contrast, global shipments saw a meagre 3 per cent (on-year) rise during the quarter, according to Counterpoint Research's latest Market Monitor service. Meanwhile, the global average selling price (ASP) also hit a second-quarter peak, rising 7 per cent YoY in Q2 to approach $350. The market witnessed both volume and value growth despite ongoing macroeconomic headwinds in several key regions. Amid the easing out of US tariffs, OEMs benefitted from robust demand for premium devices, especially in developed markets, said senior analyst Shilpi Jain. Premiumisation has accelerated beyond earlier projections, propelled by expanded access to financing options, enhanced trade-in initiatives, and heightened promotional activities – all of which are effectively lowering the barrier to entry for higher-end devices. According to Research Director Jeff Fieldhack, Apple strengthened its lead in revenues driven by strong performance of the 16 series across geographies, benefitting from the broader premiumisation trend. 'Shipments in the US were front-loaded in the quarter due to tariff uncertainties. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e drove sales in Japan, making it one of the fastest growing regions for Apple. Emerging markets like Middle East Africa, and India continue to show strong growth,' he mentioned. Samsung retained its leadership position in terms of global smartphone shipments in Q2 2025, while its revenue grew 4 per cent YoY. The brand's growth was largely driven by strong demand for its refreshed mid-tier A-series devices across regions, while the Galaxy S25 series, along with the newly added S25 Edge, drove volumes in the premium segment. 'Looking ahead, we expect the premiumisation trend to continue, with revenue growth outpacing volume growth in 2025. Additionally, growing interest in GenAI smartphones and foldable form factors will likely offer significant growth opportunities for the smartphone market,' the report mentioned.
