Green energy needs regional cooperation: Madius

Kuala Lumpur: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (Sabah Electricity) Chairman Datuk Seri Wilfred Madius Tangau has called for deeper Asean–China energy cooperation to help build a green and interconnected energy future. He made the call during the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) Industry Cooperation Conference held recently, at the invitation of Sabah China Chamber of Commerce (SCCC) President Datuk Frankie Liew and Tan Siew Ling, Vice President and Chairperson of the Women Entrepreneurs Committee.
Advertisement As a keynote speaker and forum panellist, Madius highlighted that Asean is at a critical juncture in its energy transition and underscored the importance of striking a balance between reliability, affordability and sustainability in power supply. He said China, as a global leader in energy technology and industrial development, could play a pivotal role in supporting Asean's green transition through technology sharing, investment and technical expertise. 'To realise these goals, regional collaboration is vital. Working closely with global leaders such as China, and engaging in the exchange of technology, investments and knowledge, will accelerate our progress,' he said. Madius cited Malaysia's proactive development in solar photovoltaic (PV) energy and its close cooperation with other Asean nations as a reflection of the country's strong commitment to a sustainable and integrated regional energy landscape. He said Malaysia, through strategic partnerships, technological innovation and policy leadership, is playing a key role in driving the region's energy transition. 'China's advancements in photovoltaic module manufacturing are set to play a crucial role in the global shift towards renewable energy,' he added. Madius also commended the organisers of the conference and congratulated them on the establishment of the China–Asean Photovoltaic Industry Cooperation Committee and the China–Asean New Energy Vehicle Industry Cooperation Committee. He expressed hope that these new mechanisms would foster deeper collaboration in key green sectors, particularly photovoltaics and new energy vehicles, across the region. During the conference, Madius also introduced Sabah Electricity to international delegates. He explained that the company is 83 per cent owned by Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), 17 per cent by the Sabah State Government, with the Ministry of Finance Malaysia holding a one per cent 'golden share.' He said Sabah, located in East Malaysia, faces unique challenges in power grid infrastructure due to its geographical landscape, but holds immense potential in advancing the green energy agenda. 'As the main utility provider for Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan, Sabah Electricity currently serves over 700,000 customers. China sets its sights on export boost
China will intensify efforts to advance high-quality trade development, deepen international cooperation and bolster innovation to further boost exports during the 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-30) period, the country's top commerce official said on Friday. Speaking at a news conference in Beijing, Commerce Minister Wang Wentao said these measures will foster an open, cooperative and mutually beneficial global trading landscape that promotes shared development. Wang said that despite external pressures, China further cemented its position as a major global trading nation, with notable progress in high-quality development during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-25). The country's foreign trade reached $6.16 trillion in 2024, up 32.4 percent from 2020, maintaining its position as the world's largest trading nation for the eighth consecutive year, according to the Ministry of Commerce. "Chinese exporters have shown remarkable resilience, actively adapting to changes and driving transformation," he said, adding that they are accelerating product upgrades, especially by enhancing technological content, while also expanding into new markets and channels, and exploring innovative business models. The commerce minister said that China's foreign trade-related production and supply chains have become more complete, flexible and efficient, reinforcing the country's ability to navigate external uncertainties and laying a solid foundation for sustained and high-quality trade growth. Noting that any attempt to forcibly "decouple" economic and trade ties between China and the United States is destined to fail, Wang said the bilateral economic relationship has endured fluctuations, with cooperation remaining anchored in economic fundamentals and reflecting the shared interests and expectations of people in both countries. As economic globalization has encountered mounting challenges and unilateralism and protectionism have continued to rise in recent years, China International Trade Representative Li Chenggang said that the world's economic order and governance system have come under significant strain. In response, China has reaffirmed its commitment to the multilateral trading system and has worked to expand its network of high-standard free trade agreements, advancing both multilateral and regional cooperation in parallel, said Li, who is also vice-minister of commerce. "In addition to completing negotiations on the Version 3.0 China-ASEAN Free Trade Area agreement earlier this year, China has also incorporated rules on emerging sectors such as the digital and green economy into its trade negotiations," he added. Reflecting China's broader commitment to high-standard opening-up, foreign investment has also played a key role in supporting the country's economic development. China utilized a total of $708.73 billion in foreign investment during the 14th Five-Year Plan period by the end of June this year, reaching the target set in the national commerce development plan six months ahead of schedule. Ling Ji, vice-minister of commerce and deputy China international trade representative, said that foreign-invested companies have contributed one-third of China's foreign trade and one-quarter of its industrial added value, while creating over 30 million jobs, making a significant contribution to the country's economic development. In a renewed push to draw more global capital, China on Friday introduced 12 targeted measures to encourage foreign companies to reinvest in the Chinese market and boost the effective use of foreign investment. The new policy, jointly issued by the National Development and Reform Commission and six other government bodies, said that China will support eligible foreign-invested companies reinvesting profits domestically through flexible land use, tax incentives, streamlined procedures, financial support and improved services to encourage high-quality foreign reinvestment projects. Jiangsu Mobis Automotive Parts Co Ltd, an automobile lamp and airbag manufacturer and subsidiary of South Korea's Hyundai Mobis Co in Yancheng, Jiangsu province, has strengthened its earning capacity since joining the Authorized Economic Operator (AEO) program in 2024, with support from the local government. The AEO program, promoted by the World Customs Organization, fosters partnerships between customs authorities and businesses to enhance supply chain security and streamline global trade through simplified procedures. "Since joining the program, we have expanded to become a global supplier of components to more automakers in Japan and Southeast Asia," said Zheng Yinyin, a manager at the company's foreign trade unit. World leaders confirm attendance at 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur
PUTRAJAYA: Several world leaders from Asia, Europe, Canada, the United States, Africa, and Latin America are expected to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur this October, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim confirmed. Speaking at a meeting with the Prime Minister's Department staff, Anwar noted that leaders from Italy, the European Union, Canada, and the United States have already committed to attending. 'It will be a major international conference for Malaysia,' Anwar said. Earlier this month, he revealed that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20, have confirmed their participation. Anwar emphasized that his recent overseas visits were part of Malaysia's responsibilities as ASEAN Chair, not leisure trips. 'I am among the Prime Ministers who have travelled abroad the most. Coincidentally, Malaysia is ASEAN Chairman this year,' he stated. He expressed confidence in Malaysia's civil service and security forces, citing their strong performance during the recent ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and ASEAN-China Summits. 'If you look at the performance of civil servants, police, Immigration Department, and airports at ASEAN-GCC and ASEAN-China, I am confident in our ability to provide the best for our country,' he added. Malaysia's improved ranking in the IMD World Competitiveness Report—from 34th in 2024 to 23rd in 2025—further reinforces international confidence in the nation's administrative capabilities ahead of the summit. Airbus signs fresh deal with Chinese partner amid talk of massive China order
Airbus has signed a new cooperation deal with its Chinese partner that will see the company localise more production of its A321 jet in China, with the announcement coming just ahead of a key China-Europe leaders' summit. The European aviation giant will work with its partner AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Group to start fuselage equipping – installing components onto the front and rear parts of an aircraft – for the A321 at its factory in Tianjin under the agreement. The programme is an extension of the companies' similar cooperation on the A320 and sends a positive signal in the run-up to next week's summit in Beijing, where some analysts predict Airbus may sign a 'mega-deal' worth tens of billions of dollars. 'It has expanded the scope of cooperation between both parties in the manufacturing of Airbus single-aisle aircraft, and is also an important measure by Airbus to continuously implement its localisation strategy,' George Xu, CEO of Airbus China, told state media outlet Xinhua News on Tuesday. 'China's supply chain is an indispensable part of the global aviation industry, showing strong resilience and competitiveness,' he said. The front and rear of the first A321 to undergo fuselage equipping in Tianjin were shipped to the factory at the beginning of the month, and Airbus expects the installation of the components to be completed by October. The whole process includes incoming inspection, insulation installation, bracket installation, as well as installation and testing of electrical, electronic, drainage, oxygen, flight control and hydraulic systems, according to an Airbus statement published on Tuesday. The Tianjin factory also houses Airbus' first commercial aircraft assembly line outside Europe. Inaugurated in 2008, it assembled and delivered its first A321 aircraft in 2023. Airbus and AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Group first agreed to work together on this new project during the Zhuhai Air Show in 2023, following their successful cooperation with the A320 model. Since 2021, when that earlier programme started, AVIC Xi'an Aircraft Industry Group has delivered 104 A320 aircraft body parts to Airbus, according to the statement. China's three major state-owned airlines – Air China, China Eastern Airlines and China Southern Airlines – placed an order for 292 Airbus A320neo aircraft in 2022. The deal, worth about US$37.2 billion, was the biggest single aircraft order in the airlines' history. There has been market speculation that China might announce a deal of a similar magnitude with Airbus during the China-European Union summit in late July. However, no official confirmation of a deal has been announced so far, and relations between Beijing and Brussels remain tense ahead of the summit, which has reportedly been cut from two days to just one. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST
