KUALA LUMPUR: The next of kin of the victims in the Sungai Korok tragedy will receive two benefits from the Social Security Organisation (PERKESO) based on her late father's contributions.
PERKESO confirmed that Mohamad Azim Izat Ishak, 31, was an active contributor under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969, with his last employment as a security guard.
'With his contributions, the next-of-kin, his eldest daughter Putri Qisya, is entitled to receive a one-off Funeral Management Benefit (FPM) of RM3,000 and a monthly Survivors' Pension of RM576.25 until she turns 21 or completes her first degree,' PERKESO stated.
The organisation extended its condolences and assured continued support for the family.
Additional aid, including education and psychosocial care, will be provided under the Social Synergy programme to ensure long-term assistance for Putri Qisya.
The tragic incident on July 5 involved a Proton Iswara carrying Putri Qisya's parents and four siblings, which skidded and plunged into Sungai Korok in Kedah.
All six family members were found deceased in the submerged vehicle. – Bernama

Elderly man with two wives charged with raping sister-in-law

KOTA BARU: A 64-year-old man with two wives was charged in the Sessions Court here today with raping his sister-in-law at a village in Kubang Golok, Bachok, in January this year. The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to him before Judge Zulkifli Abdullah. According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have raped his 18-year-old sister-in-law in a room at a house at 3pm on Jan 18. He was charged under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to 30 years and whipping upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mazlan prosecuted while the accused was represented by lawyer Ahmad Nurie Ab Rahman. Earlier, Siti Hajar did not offer bail, stating that the victim is the accused's sister-in-law and that both the accused's and the victim's families live together. Ahmad Nurie, however, requested bail on the grounds that his client, who works as a coconut milk trader, has to support his family and has two wives. The court later granted bail of RM12,000 with one surety and set Aug 25 for mention.

Home Ministry awaits report on officers in flying passport bribery case

KULIM: The Home Ministry is still awaiting a complete report on the investigation into enforcement officers suspected of aiding a 'flying passport' syndicate at Malaysia's border checkpoints. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail stated that the ministry will receive the report from Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) director-general Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain. 'Let him (Shuhaily) handle it first... I believe we have placed the right person in the right position,' Saifuddin told reporters after officiating the 53rd anniversary celebration of the People's Volunteer Corps (RELA) at Dataran Kulim. READ ALSO: Johor officers remanded for flying passport bribery scheme The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) recently arrested four enforcement officers for allegedly accepting bribes of around RM3,000 to facilitate 'flying passport' activities at the Johor-Singapore border. Two were detained by AKPS' Compliance Unit during an inspection, while two others were arrested for suspected collusion. Meanwhile, Saifuddin urged RELA members to acquire new skills and improve training to broaden their functions. He highlighted the need for RELA to expand beyond traditional roles like traffic control and disaster response. 'This shift aims to elevate RELA's role to include responsibilities in sensitive areas such as border control. Of course, RELA will not act alone. Its purpose is to complement and support existing enforcement agencies,' he said. The ministry will also assess RELA's needs, particularly concerning personnel welfare. - Bernama
