Wettest July is also Kolkata's cleanest July
1 2 Kolkata: Torrential rain may have turned Kolkata's roads into a bumpy, congested mess, but it did one thing remarkably well—gave the city some of its cleanest air in years. According to air quality data analysed by TOI from the Victoria Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Station (CAAQMS), July 2025 was among the cleanest Julys in recent memory, second only to July 2023. The city experienced frequent and heavy rainfall throughout the month, washing out suspended pollutants and reducing vehicular dust. A senior official from the West Bengal Pollution Control Board (WBPCB) confirmed the trend: "The rains acted like a natural air purifier. Most monitoring stations reported 'Good' air quality on the majority of days." The Victoria station, located on the southern edge of the city's iconic Maidan—often dubbed the city's "green lung"—is uniquely placed. While two sides are buffered by vast open greens, the other two face heavy traffic zones and dense tailpipe emissions. This positioning makes it an ideal gauge of both nature's influence and urban pollution levels. The data shows a dramatic shift in July 2023 and 2025, where over 80% of the days recorded 'Good' AQI levels (0–50), indicating minimal air pollution. "Loose road dust from potholes and unpaved edges becomes airborne with just the movement of vehicles," explained Dipankar Dutta, former DG (Town Planning) of KMC. "Given the current condition of Kolkata's roads, dust resuspension could emerge as a dominant pollutant source in the coming months." The situation poses a double challenge: deteriorating road conditions that increase travel time and discomfort, and a surge in dust pollution once the monsoon recedes. Multiple source-apportionment studies have shown that resuspended road dust accounts for a significant portion of urban PM10 levels in Indian cities, especially during dry spells. Kolkata's clean air in July, though encouraging, is a seasonal gift rather than a structural improvement. Unless the road infrastructure is promptly repaired, the city may soon return to moderate or even poor air quality, despite lower industrial emissions or vehicle numbers. In the weeks ahead, all eyes will be on whether the municipal agencies can act fast enough to fix roads before they become unwitting contributors to Kolkata's next pollution spike. Revised collector rates in Haryana spark backlash
Chandigarh: As the govt is showing no signs of a rollback in the revised collector rates, the revenue generation move has boomeranged into a major political and public issue across the state. With an eye on additional revenue generation of Rs 5,000 crore through stamp duty, the revenue and disaster management department reportedly revised the collector rates – increase varying from 30% in the low potential areas to over 150% in the high and hyper potential areas of the NCR and Panchkula. According to information, the rates were revised for the second time in a year. The revision came in line with the revision of levies on building material like sand, gravel, and steel, which further impacted the cost of construction. "It's nothing but the poor fiscal management of the successive chief ministers since 2014 that is to be blamed. Now, during the current tenure, the financial resources are draining out, and the common man is burdened to cover up the losses. This revision of collector rates appears to be an attempt to cover up the losses suffered by the govt on account of anticipated revenue loss due to various auctions of liquor vends," claimed Rajya Sabha MP and senior Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala. In the last eight months, the rates have been revised for the second time, that too without holding any survey, discussion with the stakeholders, and without any justification, said Surjewala. The builders and developers fear that the increase in collector rates would bring market activities to a standstill as it would force buyers to look for alternatives. "Firstly, there is hardly any land available in high and hyper zones of the NCR and Panchkula. Whatever land is available will become out of reach for commoners or small developers or builders. In such a case, people shall opt for unauthorised colonies. Hence, the govt should roll back the collector rates with immediate effect," said a developer. A property dealer claimed that the govt did not call for objections or give appropriate time for implementation of revised rates. "The buyers who have made financial arrangements in accordance with old rates are in a fix, as the govt has not given any window for them as well. In most cases, deals mature within one to three months," said a property dealer. On Saturday, the govt admitted some increase but clarified that it was almost negligible and there could be some places where the increase was to the effect of 25%. The govt also justified the revision due to the consistent demand of farmers who sought a revision of collector rates for the purpose of compensation for land acquisition. New Delhi, Aug 3 (PTI) Godrej Properties is on track to meet or even exceed ₹32,500 crore sales bookings target for this fiscal as housing demand continues to be strong, its executive Chairperson Pirojsha Godrej said. Godrej Properties Executive Chairman Pirojsha Godrej said the exuberance seen in the housing market post-COVID has calmed down, but the demand condition is still pretty strong. (Mint File Photo ) In an interview with PTI, he noted that the exuberance seen in the housing market post-COVID has calmed down, but the demand condition is still pretty strong. In the first quarter of this fiscal, Godrej Properties Ltd reported an 18 per cent decline in its pre-sales or sales bookings to ₹7,082 crore. Pirojsha attributed the decline in pre-sales to high base effect and also a slight delay in launch of couple of projects. Nevertheless, he said, "We are very much on track to meet or exceed our booking value target for the current 2025-26 financial year". The company's launch pipeline for this fiscal is quite heavy, which will help in meeting the pre-sales target of ₹32,500 crore easily, said Pirojsha. But this is exactly what we would expect to see.' In the first few years of upcycle, Pirojsha mentioned that there is always a huge pent-up demand and sharp price appreciations. "But I would say demand conditions still very strong, but not that kind of frothy looking demand that you see sometimes. So, I would say things have calmed down a little bit, but remain very, very positive," he observed. Many property consultants have reported a decline in the total housing sales across the top seven cities in the last two quarters. Pirojsha highlighted that the company's balance sheet is very strong, enabling it to make investments in land acquisition and development of projects for ensuring targeted growth of the overall business.
