A man in his late 20s was shot and "left for dead in an alley" early Wednesday morning in Minneapolis, the city's police chief said.
A caller reported someone down in an alley near Lake Street East and 17th Avenue South around 1:50 a.m., according to the Minneapolis Police Department. The caller said they had heard a gunshot about 20 minutes prior.
Officers had responded to the area around 1:20 a.m. after a ShotSpotter activation, but found nothing, the department said.
When police responded a second time, they found a man gravely wounded by a gunshot. He was taken to Hennepin Healthcare, where he died.
"We cannot, and will not, standby [sic] and tolerate this kind of violence in our city," Police Chief Brian O'Hara said. "I urge anyone with information to contact our tip line or reach out anonymously through CrimeStoppers."
No one has been arrested in connection with the shooting.

Minneapolis police impressed by Lotus worker who used jiu-jitsu to fight off attacker
The downtown Minneapolis worker attacked while taking out the garbage has been given an opportunity to serve and protect his community. Jezarius Sheldon got the attention of the Minneapolis Police Department, which is looking for recruits. Sheldon, 19, is counting his blessings that no one was seriously hurt when a verbal assault outside Lotus turned violent, and he was forced to defend himself. He says that while talking to the police, he was presented with an incredible opportunity. "He said I was very impressed the way that I held my own, and the way that I performed, considering the circumstances, I was very controlled, I was very disciplined in my actions, and he was like, 'You would do well as a police officer,'" said Sheldon. Sheldon says he was flattered, but he has plans to serve the public in a different way. He is a nursing student at the University of Minnesota. "I do want to be a nurse, that's the goal," said Sheldon. On scholarship for his good grades, he wants to continue a family health care legacy. "The fact that I get to go and pursue my education somewhere like the U of M, it's a blessing, and I'm very grateful," said Sheldon. What he does want is safety for his coworkers and others who work in this corner of Loring Park. "We see people who are physically violent outside our store, people urinate on our sidewalk, defecate on our sidewalk, call us names. I've been spit on, I've been hit," said Jim Connelly, who works at a neighboring business, Rainbow Road. Five weeks ago, Connelly's store was robbed. "A young man came in, masked, body totally covered, put a knife by my back, put a knife up my throat, put me down on my knees and then opened the till and took the money out," said Connelly. He hopes people contact Minneapolis City Hall to ask for more police and protection for areas plagued by crime. "We have no response from police; the police are too busy. The response from City Hall is, 'We're going to look into it. We're going to form a committee. We're going to think about how we're going to get this resolved.' But after 29 years, it's only gotten worse because it's never gotten better," said Connelly. Jezarius says he does not hate his attacker. Police have stepped up patrols by Lotus. So far, no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.

‘Terrible dream': One horse found dead, others maimed in targeted attack in rural Welland
One horse is dead and several others were injured in what Niagara Regional Police are calling a disturbing act of animal cruelty at a rural property in Welland. In a news release, police said eight horses were targeted overnight Thursday at a horse boarding facility on Buchner Road , east of Highway 140. While police did not name the facility, it has been identified as Eagle Wing Ranch, 426 Buchner Rd. — a family-owned hunter/jumper training farm with indoor and outdoor riding arenas. In a post on Facebook , Eagle Wing Ranch owner Amanda Janssen said there were 'no words to describe the shock and devastation our barn staff and family felt as yesterday unfolded.' 'It felt like a terrible dream you were begging to wake up from. The grief is heavy as we mourn the loss of a very special horse and the injuries of seven others. We are still reeling trying to make sense of something so unnecessary and evil.' Located on 6.5 hectares along the north side of Buchner Road, the ranch includes a 17-stall barn, tack and feed rooms, and backs on to Lyons Creek, according to its website. It offers lessons for beginner, intermediate, and advanced riders. Farm staff discovered the injured animals during their morning routine. Several horses had wounds consistent with cuts or stabbings, and one horse was found dead, said police. Another was taken to an out-of-town veterinary hospital for emergency care, while others received treatment on site. Forensic unit investigators examined the scene and are continuing their investigation. Horses are seen outside Welland's Eagle Wing Ranch on Friday. Police said they take reports of animal cruelty seriously and are asking for the public's help. Janssen said in her social media post that all thoughts and prayers for a full recovery for the injured mare are appreciated. 'A special thanks to Dr. Matt Nugent who came promptly and triaged horses as we sickeningly came to conclusions this was an act of violence. 'Thank you to the police, detectives and forensics for their professionalism, attentiveness and empathy. Thank you to all the overwhelming support we have felt from our horse community near and far,' she said online. 'Right now we are taking it day by day and hugging our ponies a little tighter,' Janssen posted. Anyone with information is asked to call 905-688-4111 , option 3, extension 1009487.
