Chris Gotterup outlasts Rory McIlroy to win Scottish Open and head to Portrush

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland (AP) — Chris Gotterup came up with the clutch shots on the biggest stage he has faced Sunday, taking down crowd favorite Rory McIlroy with a 4-under 66 and a two-shot victory in the Scottish Open that gives him another week of links golf.
Gotterup was one shot ahead of McIlroy when he hit his tee shot on the 196-yard 12th hole to 2 feet for birdie — McIlroy missed from 4 feet — to take command.
Gotterup's lead was down to one over McIlroy and England's Marco Penge, but McIlroy missed a 12-foot birdie at the par-5 16th and Gotterup hit a right-to-left putt from 10 feet in the heart of the cup for a two-shot lead with two to play.
Gotterup was so emotional when it was over he could barely speak, rubbing his eyes before saying, 'Everyone at home ... this is awesome. I'm not going to be able to keep it together.'
He didn't blink the rest of the way on the course after his final birdie, winning by two over McIlroy (68) and Penge (66) for his second PGA Tour title.
'Chris played a great round of golf. He was so solid,' McIlroy said. 'Made the bogey on 15 but bounced back with a really nice birdie on 16. After he got a couple ahead, I just couldn't claw back.'
Gotterup, built more like fellow New Jersey athlete Mike Trout than a golfer, also won the opposite-field Myrtle Beach Classic last year.
The Genesis Scottish Open had one of the strongest fields of the year, and the perks are far greater. Gotterup, who played three years at Rutgers and won player-of-the-year awards as a senior at Oklahoma, gets into the Masters for the first time next April.
The first stop is the British Open at Royal Portrush. Gotterup earned one of the three final spots through the International Qualifying Series, joined by Nicolai Hojgaard and Matti Schmid.
Hojgaard closed with a 64 to move up 11 spots into a tie for fourth to join his twin brother at Royal Portrush. Schmid shot 71 and tied for 17th, helped by Jake Knapp's late collapse.
Knapp was tied for the lead through five holes, but he took double bogey on the par-3 ninth and the rest of the back nine didn't go much better. He closed with a 74, losing on a chance to win and to play next week at Royal Portrush.
Good timing for McIlroy
McIlroy had said he was playing his best golf since going into the Masters, which he won in emotional fashion to complete the career Grand Slam. This was the first time he had seriously contended since that Masters victory, good timing with the Open in his native Northern Ireland starting on Thursday.
But he couldn't keep up with Gotterup, who looked shaky at the start when he drove into a bunker and had to make a 4-foot bogey putt. He was rock solid the rest of the way.
'I'm really happy with where my game is — the way I played over the weekend, the shots that I hit, how I controlled my ball flight,' McIlroy said. 'It has been a great week. Missing the trophy, that's about it.'
McIlroy battled to the end, especially on No. 11 when he had to pitch out left-handed and still managed to save par. When it was over, he said he was on his way to Royal Portrush, which McIlroy had not seen since the Friday of the 2019 British Open when he missed the cut.
Former U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick had a 67 and tied for fourth with Hojgaard, picking up valuable FedEx Cup points in what has been a down year.
Scottie Scheffler, the world's No. 1 player coming off a two-week break, had a 67 and tied for eighth. It was his 10th consecutive tournament finishing eighth or better, a streak that began in the Houston Open.

UK government backs London bid to host the 2029 athletics world championships

LONDON (AP) — The British government has announced its support of London's bid to host the 2029 athletics world championships. London hosted the biannual premier track-and-field event in 2017 at the London Stadium, which also held the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2012 Olympic Games. The plan is to stage the 2029 worlds at the same venue. Saturday's announcement included the government's support of a bid for Britain to host the 2029 World Para Athletics Championships. 'Subject to funding from partners being confirmed, the government has agreed to provide significant funding for both bids, reflecting the UK's ambition to once again bring the world's greatest athletes to UK shores,' it said in a statement. The announcement came with London hosting a Diamond League event on Saturday. This year's athletics worlds will take place in Tokyo in September. The 2027 edition will be held in Beijing. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he's 'delighted to support the bid.' ___

The All Blacks score a late try to secure a 29-19 win over France in the 3rd test

HAMILTON, New Zealand (AP) — Replacement hooker Brodie McAlister scored a 76th-minute try on test debut to seal New Zealand's 29-19 win over France, completing a series sweep 3-0. The All Blacks rallied from 19-8 down in the first half, taking the lead for the first time in the 59th minute and holding on with 12 unanswered points in the second spell. A try to center Anton Lienert-Brown three minutes after the halftime siren was crucial to the All Blacks' comeback win, allowing them to go to halftime only two points behind at 19-17. The All Blacks then played mostly in France's territory in the last quarter to close out the match by adding 12 unanswered points. Scrumhalf Nolann Le Garrec scored a try among 16 points as France established its 19-8 lead by the 36th minute. He converted his own try and kicked a penalty for France to lead 10-0 after 19 minutes. He then added two more penalties while France's only other points came from a dropped goal by flyhalf Antoine Hastoy. New Zealand scored a 22nd minute try through winger Will Jordan to stay in the match, then crucially scored again in the dying moments of the first half to set up a thrilling second spell. Hastoy missed a dropped goal and Le Garrec a penalty attempt early in the second half before New Zealand gained its first lead with a try to backrower Du'Plessis Kirifi to start the last quarter. Winger Emilien Gailleton was forced out in the corner in Jordie Barrett's tackle in the 61st minute, preventing France immediately regaining the lead. McAlister's try made the game safe. Center Barrett broke through the French line with a fend and McAlister was at his hip to take the ball, dive and slide over the line. The try denied a brave French team that tested New Zealand to its limits. France named its strongest lineout of the series while New Zealand made 10 changes to its starting lineup from the second test. 'The French really turned up tonight,' All Blacks captain Ardie Savea said. 'I'm proud of the boys really sticking it out in the first half and in the second half we really brought it home.' The All Blacks looked good in the short periods in the first half in which they were able to lift the tempo of the match and they created opportunities from kicks into an unguarded French backfield, one of which led to Jordan's try. But France was able to disrupt New Zealand at the breakdown and won numerous turnovers from the All Blacks lineout. France's goalline defense was superb and New Zealand players were held up over the line on four occasions. The French were also outstanding in the collision area, causing frequent handling errors which disrupted the All Blacks' continuity. A fan released a cockerel, the symbol of French rugby, onto the field during the second half as a tribute to the touring team.

Mississippi State head coach Jeff Lebby praises Auburn QB Jackson Arnold at SEC media days

Arnold made quite the impression on Lebby during their time at Oklahoma. Jeff Lebby and Jackson Arnold were set to be a dynamic duo at Oklahoma. However, both have gone their separate ways. Lebby, the former offensive coordinator at Oklahoma, left Norman ahead of the 2024 season to take over as head coach of Mississippi State. Arnold exited one year later to get a fresh start at Auburn. Despite both men competing for an SEC title at different programs, Lebby remains positive that Arnold will thrive at Auburn and will end his college days with a strong legacy. Lebby was asked about Arnold during his time at SEC football media days this week, where he showed praise for Auburn's projected starting quarterback by calling Arnold "my No. 1 guy coming out of the class" that featured the likes of Arch Manning, Nico Iamaleava, and Dante Moore in 2023. Lebby also feels that Arnold will showcase the same potential he had as an Oklahoma signee, when he won Gatorade Player of the Year in Texas. "He had all of it, and he still does," Lebby said. "He's the same young man." One of the many challenges Arnold faced at Oklahoma was inconsistency at offensive coordinator. In addition to playing under Lebby, Arnold also served under Joe Jon Finley and Seth Littrell during his time in Norman. Derrick Nix will be his fourth offensive coordinator in three seasons, however, he will now play for an offensive-minded head coach in Hugh Freeze in Auburn. During Auburn's time at SEC Media Days on Tuesday, Arnold described Auburn's offensive system as one that he is very familiar with. "The biggest thing Coach Freeze sold me on with the scheme is, one, the RPO game, and, two, the deep shots. That's something that I've been doing a lot since high school," Arnold said. "And even my first couple of years in college was huge in the RPOs, huge in the deep shots." As a freshman under Lebby in 2023, Arnold passed for 563 yards and four touchdowns while adding 116 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Arnold's dual-threat ability will surely be needed this season as Auburn is looking to become more dynamic on offense.
