M&S in Orpington to close for several months for ‘huge transformation'

Yahoo24-05-2025
An Orpington M&S is set to close for several months as it undergoes a huge transformation.
The M&S store in Nugent Park will close at 7pm today (May 24).
The store will close for several months and is set to be finished later this summer.
Once completed, the transformed store will feature a much bigger fresh market-style foodhall, offering more seasonal produce from M&S' Select Farm partners.
Customers will be able to enjoy a 'show-stopping' bakery and coffee counter serving a selection of breads and pastries, alongside takeaway hot drinks.
Other features will include an expanded frozen section, four times bigger than the current offer, as well as dedicated Flower and Wine shops.
Meanwhile, a new spacious Fashion and Beauty layout will deliver two floors of stylish choices, across Womenswear, Menswear, Kidswear and a Beauty section, offering M&S' popular Apothecary range.
The transformation is part of the retailer's £90m investment in stores across central and Greater London, estimated to create 450 new jobs.
In Orpington, an estimated 80 new colleagues are set to join the team.
M&S Orpington first opened back in 2007 and its store team are being temporarily deployed to nearby stores until the transformation is complete.
While work is underway, customers can still go to nearby Bromley, Sidcup, and Bluewater Shopping Centre stores.
The Orpington store is led by Edward Lipscombe, who has worked at M&S for a decade.
He said: 'We are so excited to have a bigger and better M&S for our loyal customers in Orpington.
'We will have the very best of M&S Food, more innovative products and more choice across fashion and beauty, which we know our customers love and want more of.
'The shopping experience will also be much better, with more space making it much easier to shop.
'I can promise the store will be worth the wait when we open the doors again later this summer.
'In the meantime, my team and I will be helping out in nearby stores and look forward to seeing our regular customers there too.'

EE posted on social media on Thursday, recognising that the fault was nationwide, but customers in Southwold complained of the issue ahead of the upcoming Latitude festival this weekend. The broadband network said: "Following a technical fault impacting voice services on our network earlier today, we have now resolved the problem, and the service is running as normal. "We sincerely apologise and recognise the inconvenience this may have caused." Customers continued to experience issues on Friday and still had problems making phone calls. The government must ensure the promise of free childcare is delivered

Takeup of the government's offer of free childcare has been one-quarter higher than predicted, which has prompted some voices in the sector to warn of its imminent 'collapse', because it is unclear how the planned expansion of the scheme in September will be funded. Bridget Phillipson, the education secretary, in an exclusive interview with The Independent, says the unexpectedly high numbers signing up for the scheme is a 'good problem to have'. There is no doubt that there is a problem, however. The higher takeup meant that the Department for Education spent £2bn on the scheme in the last financial year, covering most of the first year of the Labour government, rather than the planned £1.6bn. That gap was covered by additional funding announced in the spending review in March, but as we report today, the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimates that the gap will continue to widen as the scheme expands. The next expansion will happen in September, when working parents with children aged nine months and older will be offered 30 hours a week of 'free' childcare. Of course, the care is not 'free' in that it has to be paid for by taxpayers generally – on the grounds that helping the parents of young children to work is a public good. As Ms Phillipson puts it: 'If people are able to work, or work a few more hours, that helps us all as a society as well and it gets economic growth going.' The funding of the scheme will continue to be under pressure, but the most important fact about the scheme so far is that it has not collapsed. The Independent was among those voices warning that it had been underfunded by the Conservative government, but to its credit the new government has increased the money available. The finances of the scheme may be stretched, and many childcare providers continue to say that they cannot recruit enough staff at the wages they can afford, but the gloomier warnings of chaos and thousands of parents left without places have not yet been borne out. It is crucial to remain vigilant as the scheme expands so that remains the case. At the insistence of Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor in the previous government, the scheme was designed to start small, with a limited offer of free hours to older children, before expanding gradually to provide full coverage. This September's expansion is the final stage of that planned rollout, which so far has gone more smoothly than we expected. If the last stage is a stretch too far and some parents cannot immediately find the places they want, that would be a blow to the government's ambitions. Ms Phillipson is right that the problem facing the scheme in its final phase is the problem of success. The higher-than-expected demand means additional pressure on the public finances in the later years of this parliament – pressure that coincides with other increased demands on Rachel Reeves, the chancellor, from slow growth, higher interest rates and a government U-turn on disability benefits spending. Providing greater access to free childcare is a good policy that will help working families. Its success and ambition should be applauded. The government must now make sure that its expansion is a success.

Nationwide boss's £7m pay deal ‘not about greed', says chairman

Nationwide has defended a £7m pay deal for its boss Dame Debbie Crosbie, saying the large sum was not about 'personal greed' after it was approved by members. Kevin Parry, the chairman of the building society, told Nationwide's annual meeting on Friday that the pay plan was 'fair' compared to the salaries at rivals – despite one Nationwide member labelling it 'an obscenity'. The mutual has come in for fierce criticism in recent months amid concerns that the building society is adopting similar practices to the shareholder-owned banks. Nationwide is Britain's largest building society, with 16m members who each take a share of its profits as mutual owners of the building society. Mr Parry told Nationwide's annual meeting, which was held online, that the directors including Dame Debbie were motivated by factors other than money. 'For the avoidance of doubt, I'm very confident in saying this is not about personal greed. This is about equity with people that do similar jobs elsewhere. I don't think that money is the primary motivation. And it's not the case that they have themselves asked for more money,' he said. Alongside the pay deal, Dame Debbie's acquisition of Virgin Money last year and the lack of members on the board has led to a campaign from some quarters against her leadership. Since joining from TSB two years ago, the Scottish chief executive has cemented Nationwide's status in the upper echelons of British finance, and it now ranks number two to Lloyds Bank in the mortgage market. However, a Nationwide member who identified herself as Dr Standon used the meeting to accuse the board of being driven by money because of its aggressive growth. She said: 'Your remuneration policy and your explanation for it, including in this meeting, suggests that unfortunately, your executive team are primarily motivated by money.' Dr Standon branded it an 'obscenity' that Nationwide had decided to increase the pay, adding: 'One would expect the Nationwide to set an example to others.' Tracey Graham, the chairman of Nationwide's remuneration committee, said the pay packages were needed to prevent top executives from leaving the building society, citing Lloyds Bank's pay deal for Charlie Nunn, its chief executive, which is 25pc greater than Dame Debbie's pay. 'I have never had any pressure or any requests from any member of the executive or senior leadership team about their pay. What we do as a committee is stand back. We look at all of the market data, including that is banks and building societies,' she said. The pay deal was backed by members, with only 5pc voting against the new pay policy.
