(Reuters) -Intel shares fell 5% in premarket trading on Friday after the chipmaker forecast steeper-than-expected quarterly losses and warned of a potential exit from its foundry business despite new CEO Lip-Bu Tan's turnaround plans.
Tan on Thursday hinted at departing from ex-CEO Pat Gelsinger's core strategy, warning that without demand-backed investment, Intel risks exiting the foundry business, jeopardizing $100 billion in assets and increasing its reliance on TSMC.
As part of its foundry business reform, the company may reserve the advanced 18A manufacturing process for its products and proceed with 14A only if a major external partner commits, Tan stated in a post-conference call.
"Intel Foundry is a big story, and currently people are questioning how successful 18A is. A failure in 18A would be a broken story," said Hendi Susanto, portfolio manager at Gabelli Funds.
Intel also halted or scrapped several fab projects in the U.S. and Europe, citing financial discipline.
Once a leader in American chipmaking, Intel has lost ground after years of strategic missteps, lagging far behind rivals Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices.
The company's stock has gained 12.8% so far this year, while Nvidia and AMD have jumped about 30% and 34%, respectively.
Since taking the helm in March, Tan has divested businesses, laid off employees and redirected resources as part of his strategic reset to revive the embattled chipmaker.
"There are no more blank checks," Tan wrote in a memo to employees on Thursday, announcing further job cuts as Intel aims to reduce its workforce by 22% to 75,000 by year-end.
"I don't think he's scaling back… I think they're maybe redirecting. I would prefer them to build it out, but only if they have customer commitments," said Ryuta Makino, analyst at Gabelli Funds, who's also an Intel shareholder.
Intel trades at a 12-month forward price-to-earnings ratio of 42.55 versus 33.90 for Nvidia and 32.12 for AMD.

US Treasury chief says trade talks with China to continue this week in Sweden

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has said that he would meet his Chinese counterparts in Sweden this week to continue trade talks between the two countries, suggesting the current pause in sky-high tariffs aimed at each other could be extended. Bessent told Fox Business that he would speak with Chinese officials on Monday and Tuesday for a third round of high-level talks in Stockholm – following face-to-face discussions he held with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Geneva and London – to work out a likely extension of the pause beyond mid-August. Beijing has yet to confirm the Stockholm talks, but Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said in a post on X on Tuesday that his country would play host to the US-China negotiations next week. After US President Donald Trump's announcement of 'reciprocal' tariffs on April 2, Washington and Beijing raised punitive levies on each other's exports to triple-digit percentage levels. Since then, trade relations have thawed somewhat as the countries have engaged in talks, marked by a June telephone call between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping. On Monday Bessent said that the talks were 'in a good place', a sanguine take on negotiations echoed by Beijing's embassy in Washington, which said 'new progress' had been made in resolving each other's economic and trade concerns. Separately on Tuesday, Trump told reporters that Xi has invited him to visit Beijing and that he would accept. He added that exports of rare earth and magnets to the US may no longer be a thorny issue. 'President Xi has invited me to China, and we'll probably be doing that in the not too distant future, a little bit out, but not too distant. And I've been invited by a lot of people, and we'll make those decisions pretty soon,' he said during a meeting in the Oval Office with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr. 'We have a very good relationship. In fact, the magnets, which is a little complex piece of material, but the magnets are coming out very well. They're sending them in record numbers. We're getting along with China very well,' said Trump. In a possible signal of improving ties, China's market administration watchdog said earlier on Tuesday that it had suspended its anti-trust probe into American multinational chemical company DuPont. Beijing launched its investigation into DuPont in early April, after Trump began slapping new levies on Chinese goods. Bessent said on Monday that he hoped to raise in future talks the issue of China's purchases of Russian and Iranian oil. Beijing's embassy in Washington responded to those comments by saying that 'the international community, including China, has conducted normal cooperation with Iran and Russia within the framework of international law. 'This is reasonable and lawful without harm done to any third party, and deserves to be respected and protected,' said the embassy. China observers said that Beijing would oppose Washington's bid to link tariff talks to Chinese relations with US adversaries. 'Beijing sees its ties and transactions with Russia and Iran as just and fair and conforms to international laws and may be unlikely to make compromises for the sake of US lowering tariffs,' said Xin Qiang, an international studies professor at Fudan University in Shanghai. 'Beijing is mindful not to fall into the trap as US uses tariffs to pursue its geopolitical agenda.' During the Fox Business interview Bessent also mentioned his expectations for China's government to rein in manufacturing overcapacity and launch structural adjustments to stimulate domestic consumption to benefit American manufacturing. 'President Trump is remaking the US into a manufacturing economy. If we could do that together – more U.S. manufacturing, more Chinese consumption – that would be a home run for the Chinese Communist Party and the global economy,' he said. - SOUTH CHINA MORNING POST

Malaysia to build RM10b green AI hub with Nvidia, YTL Power in regional tech push

KUALA LUMPUR, July 27 — Malaysia is poised to emerge as a regional hub and centre of excellence for artificial intelligence (AI) in Asean following the signing of a strategic partnership between Nvidia Corporation and YTL Power International Bhd. Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the agreement aims to develop AI infrastructure powered by green energy in Malaysia, backed by an investment worth RM10 billion. 'This landmark project includes the development of AI data centres, deployment of Nvidia's high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs), and most importantly, the creation of Malaysia's own sovereign large language model (LLM),' he said in a post on social media platform X today. YTL Power is a subsidiary of YTL Corporation Bhd. Tengku Zafrul added that YTL will also build an AI ecosystem in collaboration with technology partners, suppliers and local contractors. He said the partnership also reflects the tangible outcomes of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's international engagements, laying the groundwork for investments that could reshape the nation's economic and technological landscape. In December 2023, Anwar met with Nvidia Corporation Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang and YTL Power Managing Director Datuk Yeoh Seok Hong. — Bernama

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/File Photo (Reuters) -Tea, an app that lets women anonymously comment and review dates with men, said it has suffered a data breach, with hackers gaining access to 72,000 user images. A Tea spokesperson confirmed the hack to Reuters on Saturday, saying they had detected "unauthorized access to our systems" and about 72,000 images had been exposed, including 13,000 selfies and photo identifications submitted for account verification purposes, as well as 59,000 images from posts, comments, and direct messages. "We have engaged third-party cybersecurity experts and are working around the clock to secure our systems," the company said in a statement, adding that no emails or phone numbers were exposed, and that only users who signed up before February 2024 were affected. The breach was first reported by 404 Media early on Friday. The app, which says its motto is "women should never have to compromise their safety while dating," is a platform where women who sign up and are approved after a verification process can anonymously share information about men they are interested in in Yelp-style reviews. It has gained increasing popularity, saying on Instagram that more than two million users in the past few days had asked to join the app. Signing up for Tea requires users to take selfies, which the app says are deleted after review.
