'If There's A Fair Trial, Dignified Existence': Vijay Mallya Says Open To Return To India
Vijay Mallya said he would consider returning to India if given a fair trial and treated with dignity. In a podcast, he also denied fleeing the country amid multiple accusations.
Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru owner Vijay Mallya on Thursday said he would consider returning to India if assured of a fair trial in accusations of defaulting on loans worth several crores from Indian banks.
During a four-hour-long podcast with entrepreneur and podcaster Raj Shamani, the liquor baron also said he expects a dignified existence, if at all he returns to India.
'If I have a fair assurance of a fair trial and a dignified existence in India, I will think about it (returning to India) seriously," Mallya told the podcaster.
As the conversation progressed, Mallya also addressed the allegations of misconduct against him and said, ' You may call me a fugitive, but I didn't run away."
'Fair enough, I didn't return for reasons that I consider are valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead. But where is the ' chor ' (thief) coming from? Where is the ' chori ' (theft)?" he asked.
Mallya is currently living in London, and he is the subject of extradition efforts from the Government of India for alleged loan defaults, including from the State Bank of India (SBI).
In February this year, Mallya filed a petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking loan recovery accounts from banks.
Senior advocate Sajan Poovayya appeared on behalf of Mallya.
Soon after the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) defeated Punjab Kings in the IPL final in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, Mallya recalled picking a young Virat Kohli 18 seasons ago in the players' auction and said it was remarkable to witness the maestro staying loyal to the franchise, which has finally won a long-awaited IPL trophy.
'When I founded RCB it was my dream that the IPL trophy should come to Bengaluru. I had the privilege of picking the legendary King Kohli as a youngster and it is remarkable that he has stayed with RCB for 18 years," Mallya wrote in an X post.
RCB, which was bought by Mallya for USD 111.6 million back in 2008, picked Kohli in the inaugural IPL auction in January 2008, and the batting superstar has only played for the Bengaluru-based franchise since then.
The UK-based Mallya lost ownership of the franchise in 2016 after defaulting on bank loans. The team is now completely owned by United Spirits.

‘Videos of Pitbull dogs hunting porcupines uploaded on social media': Punjab Police arrest ‘poacher' after Maneka Gandhi intervenes
The Patiala Police has arrested a Rajpura-based poacher for allegedly using his Pitbull and other dogs to illegally hunt porcupines, filming the incidents, and uploading the videos on his Instagram account, officers said on Thursday. The arrest followed the intervention of BJP MP and animal rights activist Maneka Gandhi, who was informed about the matter by a local animal lover and environmentalist Sahil Sharma. In the heart-rending videos, allegedly uploaded by the accused — identified as Ajay, a native of Jansua area of Rajpura — on his Instagram account, a pack of dogs — at least one of them prima facie identified as Pitbull — could be seen hunting and mauling a porcupine mercilessly in the presence of two men whose faces are not visible. Sharma said he had allegedly received an anonymous complaint regarding the videos, following which he contacted the office of the former Union minister, Maneka. 'Following her intervention, police immediately took action against Ajay and raided the Jansua area to nab him. Subsequently, an FIR was registered.' Based on a complaint filed by Patiala district's Wildlife Range Forest Officer Charanjit Singh, the FIR was registered against Ajay under sections 9 (prohibition of hunting), 39 (wild animals, etc, to be government property), and 51 (penalties) of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, at the Sadar Rajpura police station. In the FIR, it is mentioned that 'several residents of Rajpura hunt porcupines using Pitbull dogs, and videos of such incidents are being uploaded on social media'. Listed as endangered species, 'porcupines are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and illegal hunting or poaching of them is banned'. A complaint was received through the office of Maneka Gandhi, with videos enclosed in a pen drive, the FIR read. Speaking to The Indian Express, wildlife range officer Charanjit said: 'Prima facie, the dogs in the videos are Pitbull breed, but further investigation is underway. The accused — Ajay, from whose Instagram ID the videos were allegedly uploaded — has been arrested. It is being probed whether the dogs belong to him… The duo seen in the videos are being identified. Prima facie, they engage in the activity for fun or to consume porcupine's meat.. Porcupines are protected species (under the Act), but are often seen in the jungles of Punjab.' ACB files chargesheet against MLA, others in cash-for-no-query scandal
Jaipur: Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) filed a chargesheet Wednesday against Jaikrishn Patel, who represents the Bagidora constituency in Banswara district, and three others. They were arrested on May 4 in a first-of-its-kind 'cash-for-no-query' scandal in the state. ACB has kept the investigation pending against Rohitash Meena, the personal assistant of the MLA, as he is on the run since the trap in which the legislator was allegedly caught accepting a bribe of Rs 20 lakh in the parking lot of the MLA quarters near the state assembly building. ACB prosecutor Shalini Gautam said the chargesheet has retained the sections of Prevention of Corruption Act under which Patel and others were charged in the FIR filed after the trap operation. The CCTV footage, recording of the incident in which he was caught negotiating with the ACB complainant, philetrapic power, and other forensic evidence have been presented. According to ACB officials, Rohitash Meena handed over the money to his uncle, Laxman Meena alias Jaswant, who was arrested on May 5. During sustained interrogation, Laxman disclosed that he passed on the cash to an acquaintance, Jagaram Meena. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Gold Is Surging in 2025 — Smart Traders Are Already In IC Markets Learn More Undo Mistaking the bag for proceeds from a failed land deal, Jagaram buried it in the lawn and poured water over it to cover up the stash. Patel, 37, a first-time legislator from the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), was accused of demanding Rs 2.5 crore from a Karauli-based miner, Ravindra Kumar Meena, the son of BJP leader Ram Niwas Meena, who unsuccessfully contested the 2023 Rajasthan assembly elections from Todabhim. Patel allegedly demanded the bribe in exchange for not raising questions in the state assembly about mining activities in the Todabhim-Karauli belt—located nearly 700 km from his own constituency. The amount was later negotiated down to Rs 2 crore. The ACB has booked five accused in the case under Sections 7 and 12 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 61(2) and 238 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. According to the FIR, the bribe negotiations began on March 22, when Rohit Meena called the complainant to meet at Indira Gandhi Nagar. During the meeting, Meena mentioned "2.5," which the complainant initially believed meant Rs 2.5 lakh. However, Patel later clarified that the demand was actually Rs 2.5 crore. In the last week of April, the complainant paid Rs 1 lakh to Patel, which helped the ACB verify the complaint and prepare for a trap. On May 4, Patel and another accused, Vicky, reportedly discussed, inspected, and accepted Rs 20 lakh in cash from the complainant at the MLA's official residence. The money was later handed over in the parking area and concealed, a sequence that the FIR says has been prima facie established. ACB stated that Patel abused his public office to obtain illegal gratification, amounting to offences under the amended Prevention of Corruption Act and the relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Gukesh responds to Carlsen's 'weaker players' jibe with 49-move victory, moves into sole lead in Croatia
D Gukesh emerged triumphant for the second time in as many meetings against Magnus Carlsen defeating the world No 1 while playing with black pieces after his victory over Fabiano Caruana to move to the top of the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia standings. read more D Gukesh defeated Magnus Carlsen convincingly on Day 2 of SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia to move to the top of the standings. Image credit: Lennart Ootes/Grand Chess Tour Despite suffering a stunning defeat against D Gukesh at the Norway Chess last month, Magnus Carlsen sought to play down the threat from the Classical world champion at the SuperUnited Rapid and Blitz Croatia by describing the Indian Grandmaster as one of the 'presumably weaker players'. On Thursday, his explosive comments in an interaction with Grand Chess Tour came back to bite him as he lost to the 19-year-old Indian for the second time in as many meetings on the second day of the event in Zagreb. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Only this time, the Norwegian chess icon did not grab headlines by throwing a fit after the defeat the way he did in Stavanger by slamming his fist on the table in anger after his sixth-round defeat against the Indian. It turned out to be quite the memorable day in the Croatian capital for Gukesh, who was in the joint-lead at the end of the first day along with Carlsen, Jan-Krzysztof Duda and Wesley So. The Chennai lad, after all, defeated Fabiano Caruana with white pieces before triumphing over Carlsen while playing as black. The consecutive victories on Thursday thus helped Gukesh move to the top of the standings in what is a tough 10-player field featuring some of the biggest names in the world of chess. Gukesh D continued his sensational run in Zagreb, defeating Magnus Carlsen in Round 6 to score his fifth consecutive win and take sole lead with 10 points after the second day of rapid. Jan-Krzysztof Duda drew his game against Wesley So and now sits in second place with 8 points.… — Grand Chess Tour (@GrandChessTour) July 3, 2025 STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Carlsen and Caruana had finished first and second respectively in the latest edition of Norway Chess, the former successfully defending his title and lifting the trophy for a record-extending seventh time. Gukesh capitalises on Carlsen's blunder, forces a resignation in 49 moves Gukesh was on the charge from the word go after Carlsen opted for an English opening, advancing his dark-squared bishop in just his second move and capturing his opponent's knight in the third, and getting his other bishop and both knights on the charge by move 10. Carlsen, who had defeated Gukesh in both of their meetings in the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour earlier this year as well as in the opening round of Norway Chess, began ceding ground with a questionable 30th move (Bxb5), which led to some quick exchanges. He was then pushed to the backfoot by a rook blunder in his 35th move (Rc5), which Gukesh quickly capitalised on. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD In the end, Gukesh managed to corner Carlsen's king with his queen as well as a rook and a bishop, forcing his opponent to resign in 49 moves and moving into the sole lead after six Rapid rounds across two days. And unlike their sixth-round meeting in Norway, Carlsen was never in a dominant position at any stage of their game in Croatia. On the contrary, the game turned on its head in the blink of an eye after Carlsen's blunder and Gukesh, who had sealed his World Championship triumph against Ding Liren in a similar manner, wasn't one to let victory slip out of his grasp.
