Brown Thomas co-founder Hilary Weston dies aged 83

Irish Daily Mirror13 hours ago
The CEO of Brown Thomas Arnotts has paid tribute to the luxury department store's co-founder, Hilary Weston, in the wake of her death.
Mrs Weston, who also helped build Penneys, died at the age of 83, her family has confirmed.
The Irish-Canadian businesswoman, who was also the former Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, passed away in England, where she had been living in recent years.
Donald McDonald, CEO of Brown Thomas Arnotts, described her as a remarkable figure in Irish business, culture, and philanthropy.
He said: 'Everyone at Brown Thomas Arnotts is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hilary Weston — a truly remarkable person.
'Along with her husband Galen, her vision and enduring support for Irish culture and Irish enterprise laid the foundations for the success we enjoy today.
'On behalf of all of us at Brown Thomas Arnotts, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the Weston family at this time.
'Her memory and impact will not be forgotten.'
Mrs Weston was born in Dún Laoghaire in 1942 as the eldest of five children and married Irish-Canadian billionaire Galen Weston in 1966.
She was prominent in the early days of Penneys and later ran Brown Thomas after her husband bought the retailer.
Mrs Weston was later a vice-chair of the Weston's Canadian luxury retail chain, Holt Renfrew.
Confirming her death, her family said: 'A beloved wife, proud mother, cherished sister, adoring grandmother and loyal friend, Hilary's life was shaped by her quiet strength, enduring generosity, and a deep commitment to helping others.
"Over their loving 55-year marriage, Hilary and the late W. Galen Weston supported each other in family, business and community life, with a mutual devotion to public service.
'From her early days working as a fashion model to support her widowed mother and younger siblings, to her decades as a distinguished business leader, philanthropist and public servant, Hilary lived a life of deep and far-reaching impact.'
Tánaiste and the Foreign Affairs Minister, Simon Harris, paid tribute to the late businesswoman, describing her as a 'very proud Irish-Canadian, who served both Ireland and Canada with distinction and generosity'.
In a statement he said: 'I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Hilary Weston.'
'In addition to her successful businesses and public service in Canada, through her leadership of the Ireland Funds Canada, she made a lasting contribution to Irish-Canadian relations.
'I extend sincere condolences to her children, Alannah and Galen, and the entire Weston family,' Mr Harris added.
In early days of Penneys, Ms Weston designed dresses which she had made up by local makers to put in the window for sale for young women to buy for Saturday night dances.
She worked with her friend, Cecily Macmenamin, to support Irish designers, including Sybil Connolly, Paul Costelloe, Philip Treacy and Louise Kennedy. She also brought International designers to Ireland, such as Armani, Louis Vuitton, Hermes.
She is survived by her two children, Allanah Weston and Galen Weston Jr, and predeceased by her husband, Galen Weston, who died in 2021 following a long illness.

Two further spinach products sold in Irish supermarkets were recalled in late July with seven spinach and mixed leaves products having been recalled previously. Over 200 ready-made meals produced by Ballymaguire Foods were also recalled last month.

Modular calf housing units sought for Moorepark

Teagasc is currently inviting tenders from suppliers for modular calf housing units at Moorepark. This procurement process forms part of Teagasc's strategy to improve the calf-rearing infrastructure at the Co. Cork facility. According to the tender documents, the modular units will provide "high-welfare, thermally efficient, and hygienic accommodation for calves up to 12 weeks-of-age". "The solution is intended to address capacity constraints during block calving periods," the documents add. Moorepark is a leading national research and advisory centre focused on sustainable animal production systems, including dairy and young stock development. Teagasc said that the modular units must be prefabricated, freestanding, and capable of being installed with minimal groundworks. The authority noted the units are intended for "seasonal or flexible deployment". Teagasc is seeking proposals from experienced suppliers who can provide units that meet or exceed the technical specification, deliver to site, and carry out or support on-site assembly. The units must be easy to clean, have good ventilation and comply with Irish and EU animal housing standards. The modular calf housing units will be used to support rearing up to 120 calves up to 12 weeks-of-age. The tender documents state that each pen should house 8–10 calves up to 100kg. The closing date for tenders is 2:00p.m on August 14, 2025.

Spotify is increasing its subscription prices again (but only for students)

SPOTIFY HAS ANNOUNCED that it will increase prices for student subscribers in Ireland on 1 September. The price hike is part of wider increases for users of the streaming service across Europe, South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and the Asia-Pacific region. From next month, the price of a student subscription will go from €5.99 to €6.99 in Ireland. Spotify has several subscription options, such as a family plan and a 'duo' plan, but there'll be no changes made to these for Irish users. Advertisement Last year, the price of the Individual Premium subscription – Spotify's most popular plan – went from €10.99 to €11.99. The app is free to use, but a subscription eliminates ads and provides other features and content such as audiobooks. The price increase follows similar changes in the US and UK, which came into effect in May. Spotify has around 220 million premium subscribers worldwide. In 2024, the service made a net income of €1.138 billion – the first year it's made a profit since the company's founding in 2006. In the same year, it paid out €10 billion to artists. It had faced backlash for not paying artists more for streams and was accused of in the US unfairly cutting loyalty rates . However, in January a federal judge ruled that the move was supported by 'unambiguous' regulations. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
