Khaled Nordin: Madani Economy projects in army camps help boost family income, support food security
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the projects, supported through a RM10 million allocation and carried out in collaboration with the Higher Education Ministry (MOHE), also reflect the government's efforts to enhance the economy and promote sustainability within the defence community.
Citing the stingless bee honey and oyster mushroom entrepreneurship projects undertaken by the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (2 RAMD) community at Sungai Ara Camp in Bayan Lepas, he said these ventures also help occupy the time of family members, particularly as the camp's personnel are scheduled for a peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, next year.
'When we talk about preparedness, we look not only at assets but also at our personnel and their families. We value the contributions and sacrifices of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and understand that the well-being of personnel includes the welfare of their families.
'With support from strategic partners at MOHE, we have identified valuable knowledge and skills that can be transferred to the families within military camps,' he told reporters after a working visit to Sungai Ara Camp today.
Mohamed Khaled also expressed appreciation to the military families involved in the stingless bee honey and oyster mushroom projects at the camp, which incorporate elements of smart agriculture, technical training and entrepreneurship opportunities for members of the 2 RAMD BAKAT (the military families' welfare association), in line with the Kem Madani aspiration.
The stingless bee honey project is a collaboration between 2 RAMD and Universiti Sains Malaysia, focusing on systematic farming using log hives and biotechnology-based methods.
Meanwhile, the oyster mushroom cultivation project, carried out in partnership with Universiti Malaysia Perlis, utilises a closed-system mushroom house with temperature and humidity controls, enabling consistent and high-quality yields.
Earlier, Mohamed Khaled reviewed the camp's operational readiness and personnel welfare while assessing the progress of community development initiatives.
He also interacted with 300 Sungai Ara Camp residents and presented RM500 in welfare aid to 15 individuals with chronic illnesses, comprising military personnel and their family members stationed in the area.
Also present were Defence Ministry secretary-general Datuk Lokman Hakim Ali, Army Chief Gen Tan Sri Muhammad Hafizuddeain Jantan, Army Western Field Commander Lt Gen Datuk Malek Razak Sulaiman, and 2nd Infantry Division Commander Maj Gen Datuk Fazal Abdul Rahman. — Bernama

Tabung Pahlawan Campaign Has Raises RM2.18 Mln
ALOR GAJAH, July 27 (Bernama) -- The 2025 Tabung Pahlawan Campaign, launched in conjunction with Warriors' Day, has raised RM2.186 million as of July 24, reflecting the people's continued support towards the welfare of Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) veterans. Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari said to widen outreach and simplify contributions, the ministry had also introduced a QR code donation campaign as an alternative, targeting a minimum of RM1 from every Malaysian. 'Malaysia has more than 34 million people, imagine if every person contributes at least RM1, the impact would be tremendous. 'That's why we've launched the QR code campaign, which is now widely circulated via social media and official government channels. We hope this will encourage more people to contribute,' he told Bernama after attending a high tea event with Melaka MAF veterans, in conjunction with the 2025 Warriors' Day celebration at Dataran Gangsa, here today. Also present were Veterans' Affairs Department (JHEV) director-general Maj Gen Datuk Semaon Marjuki and JHEV Melaka and Negeri Sembilan director, Major Muhammad Zarifi Tumin. Earlier at the event, 120 MAF veterans from Melaka, representing 22 associations, were celebrated. They were presented with contributions, including Cost of Living Aid, Higher Education Aid, Home Repair Assistance, and 'Bakul Rahmah' food baskets. At the same time, Adly said 151,000 MAF veterans had registered and were now using the Veteran Digital Card, which was introduced in September last year. 'With the digital card, veterans no longer need to carry a physical card as all their information is now accessible on their smartphones. So for those who haven't made the switch, we strongly encourage them to do so and to update their information. 'Although the physical card is still in use, the digital version offers easier access for members, especially to information on health, welfare, and other services,' he said.

Penang livestock revenue hits RM1.906 billion with poultry leading growth
KEPALA BATAS: Penang recorded a Livestock Revenue Value (NHT) of RM1.906 billion last year, marking an increase of RM41.54 million compared to the previous year. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow revealed that poultry and duck products, including meat and eggs, were the largest contributors, accounting for 91.75 per cent of the total NHT. 'The livestock industry remains a vital source of protein for the people of this state,' Chow said during his speech at the opening of the Penang Farmers, Livestock Breeders, and Fishermen Day at the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MARDI). Interim results from the Penang Agricultural Census 2023 showed that the livestock sector contributed 44 per cent of the state's total agricultural sales, valued at RM3.514 billion. Chow emphasised that the Livestock Enactment aims to modernise self-sustaining industries like poultry and pig farming, shifting them toward large-scale, technology-driven operations. The event, held from Friday until today, was also attended by State Agrotechnology, Food Security, and Cooperative Development Committee chairman Fahmi Zainol. Chow highlighted the adoption of closed-house farming to improve production quality and environmental sustainability while ensuring support for small-scale traditional livestock farming through the Livestock Industry Development Project. Efforts to control zoonotic diseases remain a priority to safeguard public health and industry sustainability. Chow added that Penang's agricultural strategy aligns with the National Agro-Food Policy (DAN 2.0) 2021-2025, focusing on food security. The state is also developing strategic agricultural parks like Ara Kuda and Mayfield, which utilise advanced farming technology. The federal government's Integrated Agricultural Development Area (IADA) initiative further strengthens the rice industry through 12 key programmes aimed at boosting efficiency and resilience. – Bernama
