TSX futures inch up as US-Canada trade talks revived

(Reuters) -Futures for Canada's main stock index edged higher on Monday as the revival of trade talks between Washington and Ottawa improved market sentiment. Futures on the S&P/TSX index were up 0.1% at 06:54 a.m. ET (1054 GMT). Canada scrapped its digital services tax targeting U.S. technology firms late on Sunday, just hours before it was due to take effect, in a bid to restart stalled trade negotiations with the U.S. Canada's finance ministry said that Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump will resume trade negotiations to agree to a deal by July 21. Trump abruptly called off trade talks on Friday over the tax targeting U.S. technology firms, saying that it was a "blatant attack." Toronto's commodity-heavy S&P/TSX composite index pulled back on Friday from a record high as data showed the domestic economy contracting and after Trump shattered optimism that U.S. would reach a tariff deal with Canada. Gold firmed on Monday, while oil prices, nudged lower. Canada Drops Tax That Infuriated Trump

Canada has withdrawn its digital services tax on technology companies such as Meta Platforms Inc. and Alphabet Inc. in a move to restart trade talks with the US. 'Rescinding the DST will allow the negotiations to make vital progress and reinforce our work to create jobs and build prosperity for all Canadians,' Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne said in a social media post late Sunday local time. On Friday afternoon, US President Donald Trump said he was ending all trade discussions with Canada, one of its largest trading partners, in retaliation for the digital tax. He also threatened to impose a fresh tariff rate within a week. Donald Trump Melts Down Over CNN's Abby Phillip. Her Polite Clapback Goes Viral.

CNN's Abby Phillip had the politest of comebacks ― with more than a subtle serving of shade ― after President Donald Trump lashed out at her in a furious Truth Social rant. Trump took aim at Phillip on Friday following her crediting of a recent stock market surge to the president's backing down on his proposed tariffs. The president unleashed a characteristically unfiltered tirade, just one of several he's directed at personalities on the network in recent days. 'Where does CNN get its 'talent?'' Trump fumed. 'Just watched someone named Abby Phillip lecture her audience on Tariffs and the economy (which is doing record business!). She has absolutely no idea what she is talking about, strictly 3rd rate. Fortunately, the audience has long ago left CNN, and it will only get WORSE. LOSERS ALL!!!' Phillip responded with a pointedly polite post on X (formerly Twitter), writing simply: 'Thank you for watching, Mr. President.' The understated response quickly went viral.
