Waseem shines as UAE beat Bangladesh, keep hopes alive in three-match T20 series
Chasing, UAE got over the line for the loss of eight wickets with 1 ball to spare.
Needing 12 off the last over, Haider Ali hit a six to bring the equation down to four needed off four.
Haider took a couple of the penultimate ball to take them over the line.
Waseem stole the show as he kept the chase alive single-handedly till the 15th over in a topsy-turvy match.
UAE got off to a blazing start as both the openers - Muhamad Waseem and Muhammad Zohaib – put up 107 runs for the first wicket to lay down a strong foundation.
Waseem and Zohaib batted with both patience and aggression as they amassed 72 runs in the first powerplay.
Waseem was at his usual best as he cantered to his second fifty of the series in just 25 deliveries.
He brought up his 22nd fifty in the T20Is with a boundary as the UAE looked in control of the match.
Like the UAE bowlers, Bangladesh bowlers were also struggling to stop the flow of the runs. They had already tried five bowlers by the end of the eighth over.
Waseem was ably supported by Zohaib, who played a perfect foil.
Waseem brought up a 100-run partnership with a six off Rishad in 9.2 overs as the UAE reached the half-way mark without loss.
Tanvir Islam brought reprieve to the Bangladesh side by sending back Zohaib, who miscued a shot and holed out to a fielder in the cover.
Rishad got rid of Rahul Chopra in the next over as UAE lost two wickets within the span of three runs.
The two wickets in consecutive overs pushed the UAE on the backfoot briefly as the run rate dropped below ten an over for the first time in the 12th over.
But Waseem took 20 runs off the 13th over, bowled by Rishad, to spur the run rate above 10 again.
Waseem knew it well that the UAE batting was revolving around him and he needed to stay at the crease till the end.
Shorifula Islam dented the UAE's hopes by getting Waseem caught by wicket-keeper off a slower delivery.
With the dismissal of Waseem, UAE's hopes of a come-from-behind win all but ended. He smashed nine fours and five sixes during his stint at the crease.
Earlier, Bangladesh's batsmen were in blistering form. In the absence of the first match centurion Parvez Hossain Emon, Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das gave Bangladesh a fiery start.
Emon, who became the second Bangladeshi batsman to score a century in T20Is after Tamim Iqbal, was ruled out because of a groin injury.
But the make-shift openers Tanzid and Das put on spectacular batting performances to set the tone for a huge total. They stitched a 90-run partnership for the first wicket in just nine overs.
Tanzid played a blitzkrieg knock, studded with immaculate shots all over the ground, Both the batsmen played sensibly and kept the UAE bowlers at bay.
They kept the scoreboard moving as they toyed with UAE's bowling attack. Tanzid was the more brutal of the two as his contribution in the 90-run partnership was that of 59 runs.
Tanzid changed his gears after getting his eyes in. He did not spare any bowlers. UAE's decision of electing to bowl first seemed to be firing back.
UAE bowlers were struggling to check the flow of runs, leave alone taking a wicket. On a batting-friendly Sharjah turf, Bangladesh were cruising along nicely and looked poised to post a huge total of 200 plus.
Tanzid raced to his fifty in just 25 deliveries with the help of seven fours and three sixes, which means 46 of the 50 runs came in boundaries.
UAE were desperately looking to break the partnership. They knew if they had to stay in the match, they needed to break this dangerous-looking partnership.
Debutant Saghir Khan gave the UAE the first breakthrough by getting rid of Tanzid.
The left-handed batsman was caught at the deep-square leg in an attempt to pull a short delivery by the UAE pacer.
He could not manage to get hold of the ball and it landed straight in the safe hands of Matiullah at the boundary rope.
UAE heaved a sigh of relief as they were oblivious of what was in store. Das, who was a dormant partner, flexed his muscles and started to lead the charge.
He added another 35 runs for the second wicket with Najmul Hossain Shantu in just 3.2 overs. The partnership grew fast and had started to look dangerous.
Mohammad Jawadullah, who took four wickets in the last match on his debut, broke the partnership to bring some respite to the UAE camp.
After the departure of Das, Towhid Hridoy took the responsibility and shared a couple of big partnerships to heap more misery on the UAE bowlers.
Hridoy's 24-ball 45 was studded with three fours and two sixes. He was well supported by Shanto. Jakir Ali's quickfire cameo of 6-ball 18 took Bangladesh to 205/5.
Jawadullah again put up a spirited performance as he returned with a figure of 3/45, accounting for the dismissals of Das, Shanto and Jakir. His tally of dismissals has reached seven in just two games.
Meanwhile, one more T20 has been added to the on-going tour of Bangladesh to the UAE. Originally, Bangladesh were slated to play two T20Is, but one more match has been added to the series, it was announced by ECB in statement.
It is believed that Bangladesh's tour of Pakistan is in limbo following the war between India and Pakistan. Though the war has ended but security of the players is still a concern. Both the countries had to cancel their respective cricket leagues briefly before resuming it after the ceasefire.

Hamstring injury rules Hasaranga out of T20I series against Bangladesh
Sri Lanka will be without their star leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh, starting Thursday, after the bowler suffered a hamstring injury during the final One-day International (ODI) of the recently-concluded series. Hasaranga sustained the injury to his right leg while batting in the third ODI, forcing him out of the T20I leg of the tour. The 26-year-old played a pivotal role in the opening ODI, triggering a dramatic Bangladeshi collapse with a match-defining spell that laid the foundation for Sri Lanka's 2-1 series win. Despite his importance to the side, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has not announced any replacement. Hasaranga will return to Colombo and begin his rehabilitation process at the High Performance Center (HPC) with hopes of being fit for the upcoming international assignments later this year. In Hasaranga's absence, Charith Asalanka will lead a reshuffled Sri Lankan side looking to bounce back after a disappointing T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year. The selectors have made several changes, with experienced names like Kusal Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, and Kusal Perera forming the core of the batting unit alongside emerging talents like Kamindu Mendis and Avishka Fernando. The bowling attack will rely on the pace of Matheesha Pathirana, Binura Fernando, and Nuwan Thushara, while Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage, and Jeffrey Vandersay are expected to shoulder the spin responsibilities in Hasaranga's absence. The three-match T20I series provides a vital opportunity for Sri Lanka to test their bench strength and fine-tune combinations ahead of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup next year. With Hasaranga missing out, the focus now shifts to how the rest of the squad steps up in his absence and maintains the momentum from their ODI series win. Earlier, Mendis smashed his sixth ODI hundred and led Sri Lanka to a commanding 99-run victory in the third and final one-day international as the home team clinched the series 2-1. Mendis marshaled Sri Lanka to 285-7 with an aggressive 124 off 114 balls after captain Charith Asalanka won the toss and elected to bat. The Bangladeshi batters struggled against the pace of Dushmantha Chameera and Asitha Fernando, who shared six wickets between them to bowl out the visitors for 186 and give Sri Lanka an eighth successive win in a home ODI series. He is also part of an exclusive group of Bangladeshi cricketers, alongside Mohammad Rafique, Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan, to have completed the 1000 runs and 100 wickets double in the format. Earlier, the all-rounder was named as the vice-captain in Bangaldesh's Test squad for their first assignment of the next World Test Championship cycle next month in Sri Lanka.

Tryon had scores of 67 (against India), 35 and 74 (against Sri Lanka) but the highlight was a haul of five for 34 against Sri Lanka which included a hat-trick. The West Indies captain Haley Matthews and India batter Jemimah Rodrigues were the others shortlisted for the monthly award this South Africa didn't enter the final of the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, Chloe had a productive month. Though South Africa had a 23-run loss to eventual champions India, Chloe was in fine nick to hit 67 off 43 balls, comprising four boundaries and five sixes, apart from recording figures of 1-46 and taking the prized wicket of Smriti Mandhana. But Chloe saved her best for last as she was at her dominant best for South Africa in their final tri-series game against hosts Sri Lanka. Batting first, Chloe smashed 74 off 51 deliveries, including four fours and five sixes, as South Africa posted a huge 315. Chloe followed it up by picking her maiden five-wicket-haul – 5-34 off her eight overs as she tore through the Sri Lanka batting order, including taking a stunning hat-trick and guiding South Africa to a 76-run victory at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium in Colombo. 'I am really happy with my five-wicket effort and the hat-trick. I was pretty tired most of the time, but I'm happy to have achieved that. You always want to add those milestones to your memories as a cricketer.' 'I'm glad I finally got to tick that off my list. It's still a bit of a blur, to be honest. I think the team carried me throughout that day. I was a little bit sick, so that didn't really help much. But everything came together, and I'm just really happy that I could perform and help the team win,' said Chloe in an ICC statement. The all-rounder is now aiming to build on a consistent set of performances from Sri Lanka when South Africa go on a white-ball tour of the West Indies, starting later this month, and later play the 2025 ODI World Cup in India. The 31-year-old scored 169 runs in five ODIs batting in the middle order and was the Player of the Series in the series against Bangladesh in Sharjah which his side won 2-1. He led the team in this T20I series and scored 54 and 82 in the first two matches opening the batting. Waseem, who also won the award in April 2024, edged all-rounders Brendon McMullen of Scotland and Milind Kumar of the United States. Mohammad Waseem said: 'I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award for the second time. I want to thank the ICC and all the fans who voted for me. I also want to thank all my team members and support staff as this award is as much for them as it is for me. 'The month of May brought us a historic series win over Bangladesh in Sharjah. The victory indicates the growth of UAE cricket and the depth of talent in the country. The series was won due to a total team effort and what delighted me the most was the performance of the debutants and the youngsters in the squad who displayed incredible passion and heart. 'Our aim is now to continue our progress and not only compete but beat bigger teams and make our presence felt in major international events. I am sure that with the current lot of players, UAE cricket will continue to thrive and prosper. I would also want to thank the Emirates Cricket Board for their support and backing. 'At an individual level, my aim would be to work even harder, to stay consistent and to play according to the demands of modern day T20 game for the benefit of our team.'
