CAF launches a ‘new look' TotalEnergies CAF Champions League Trophy together with TotalEnergies ahead of the first Leg Final this weekend
The unveiling took place at TotalEnergies' South African Headquarters in Johannesburg and was attended by some of African football legends including Lucas Radebe, Teko Modise and Siphiwe Tshabalala as well as several African football leaders.
One of the two Finalists, Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids will make history when they lift the new trophy.
CAF's official unveiling of the striking new trophy design is far more than a mere replacement; it represents a powerful evolution of CAF's commitment to modernisation and innovation.
As part of CAF's broader strategy to rebrand and elevate its Competitions, the new design was conceived to amplify the visual impact of African football's most coveted prize.
'In line with the vision of the CAF President, Dr Patrice Motsepe, we are rebranding and repositioning African football with a special focus on interclub competitions at the moment. This TotalEnergies CAF Champions League trophy reveal reflects our goals and bold steps toward an exciting African club football environment. With this, we aim to elevate the stature of African club competitions to global prominence, strengthen our commercial appeal, and inspire a new generation of footballing talent,' CAF General Secretary Véron Mosengo-Omba said.

Thursday's unveiling builds on the growing excitement across the continent ahead Saturday's much-anticipated 2024/25 TotalEnergies CAF Champions League final, first leg, between South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns and Pyramids FC of Egypt in Pretoria.
The return leg for the prestigious title will be on 1 June in Cairo.
The new Trophy draws inspiration from the fierce competition and rich cultural heritage of the continent, the trophy features sleek silver and gold lines, symbolising unity, rivalry, and the competitive balance that defines the tournament.
At its peak, the golden sphere – embellished with African symbolism – represents the ultimate prize: victory.
The interplay of contrasting silver and gold elements celebrates both the triumph of champions and the honour of worthy opponents, reinforcing the spirit of respect, ambition, and excellence that underscores African football.
The redesign mirrors the successful evolution of African football, positioning the TotalEnergies CAF Champions League trophy as a visual icon that reflects the prestige and passion of African club football.

'We had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen and we made it. All the players were exceptional in everything, in the possession phase, the non-possession phase.' Bernardo Silva bundled in the first goal of the game at Orlando's Camping World Stadium inside 10 minutes, setting up what many expected to be a routine victory for the Premier League side. But Leonardo leveled the match at the start of the second half when he headed in Rúben Dias' block, before Malcom's breakaway goal moments later gave Al-Hilal a 2-1 lead. The advantage was short-lived with Erling Haaland scoring from a corner, and the game remained at 2-2 for the rest of the 90 minutes after Haaland had an attempt cleared off the line by Ali Lajami. Kalidou Koulibaly's header put Al-Hilal back into the lead in extra-time, but substitutes Rayan Cherki and Foden combined to send the match to a thrilling conclusion. And that came courtesy of Leonardo's winner when Sergej Milinković-Savić's header was saved by Ederson into his path. Al-Hilal will now face Brazilian side Fluminese in the Club World Cup quarterfinals having ended a 20-game winless run for Asian teams against European opponents in FIFA club competitions. 'We knew that it would be a difficult game against one of the best teams in the world and we wanted to show our ideas, our talents and our power,' said Koulibaly, per 'We made a very good game; we took our chances so we can be happy. We wanted to show that Al-Hilal have the power and the talent to be here and we showed a great mentality.'

The Technical Study Group (TSG) of the WAFCON 2024 Confédération Africaine de Football ('CAF') is a team of experienced football experts, former coaches, technical directors, instructors, and analysts, tasked with studying, analysing, and documenting CAF competitions. They will analyse tactical trends, playing systems, and individual and team performances, producing detailed technical reports that summarize these observations. These reports not only highlight strategies and best practices but also provide practical recommendations to CAF Member Associations, coaches, and development departments to help elevate the standard of the game across the continent. In addition to analysis and reporting, the TSG will select official awards such as 'Woman of the Match,' 'Best XI,' and the tournament's best player, goalkeeper, or young talent. They will also contribute to CAF's broader technical strategy by supporting coaching education, creating learning materials, and sharing findings from tournaments through workshops and courses. Ultimately, the TSG's work helps align CAF's development initiatives with CAF's development strategy, ensuring continuous improvement in coaching standards, player development, and the overall quality of football in Africa. The TSG members for WAFCON 2024, led by the director of CAF Technical development division, Raul Chipenda, are also tasked with providing a Fair play report after each match. Meet the TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON 2024 Technical Study Group: Sheryl Botes (South Africa) A senior CAF coaching instructor and long-standing women's football advocate, Botes brings decades of experience in technical development, coach education, and tournament analysis across the continent. Currently, Sheryl is serving as the head coach of the Uganda women's national team. Leah Sweetness (South Africa) With a strong background in women's football development, Sweetness is a CAF-certified instructor and former player dedicated to nurturing young talent and advancing the women's game in southern Africa. She is the TSG lead for the COSAFA Zone. Lamia Boumehdi (Morocco) A former coach of the Morocco U20 Women's National Team, Boumehdi has been instrumental in the rise of Moroccan women's football, contributing both at club and national levels with a focus on technical excellence and youth progression. She guided TP Mazembe to a first ever CAF Women's Champions League title 2024. Radia Fertoul (Algeria) A former head coach of the Algerian women's national team, Fertoul is a respected tactician with rich experience in North African football. Jacqueline Shipanga (Namibia) One of the most recognisable figures in Namibian football, Shipanga is a CAF and FIFA coaching instructor and former Brave Gladiators coach, known for her leadership in both technical and administrative roles. Shilene Booysen (South Africa) Booysen is a highly regarded tactician with experience coaching South Sudan's women's national team and as a former analyst for Banyana Banyana. Clementine Touré (Côte d'Ivoire) She is the former head coach of Côte d'Ivoire's women's national team, Touré is a trailblazer in African women's football. She led Equatorial Guinea to the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup and has vast experience at WAFCON level. She also served as TSG in both 2019 and 2023 FIFA Women World Cups. Bernadette Anong (Cameroon) A former Indomitable Lioness and current coach, Anong is deeply involved in talent development in Cameroon. She brings a blend of tactical insight and player-centred analysis to the TSG. Anong was part of the coaching staff that lead the Cameroon women national team to their First World Cup and Olympic qualifications. The TSG's work will be published in a post-tournament technical report that will inform future training, talent identification, and development programmes across the continent. According to the latest figures, the Venezuelan bolívar topped the list, plummeting by a staggering 51%. Meanwhile, the South Sudanese pound dropped by 15%, followed by the Burundian franc (13%), Nigerian naira (11%), and Tunisian dinar (9%). In the first half of 2025, the Venezuelan bolívar suffered the sharpest depreciation against the U.S. dollar, plunging by a staggering 51%, amid the country's continued economic crisis. Two other currencies — the South Sudanese pound and the Argentine peso — followed with a steep decline of 15% each, reflecting deepening fiscal and inflationary challenges. The Turkish lira also experienced significant pressure, weakening by 13%, while the Libyan dinar fell by 9%, driven by political and monetary instability. Among sub-Saharan African currencies, the Tanzanian shilling and the Liberian dollar each dropped by 8%, placing them among the most devalued currencies globally. The Surinamese dollar declined by 7%, while the Ethiopian birr and the Rwandan franc recorded smaller but notable declines of 6% and 5%, respectively. These currency losses underscore the growing vulnerabilities of emerging and frontier markets, particularly in the face of global financial tightening, rising inflation, and mounting debt obligations. As the U.S. dollar remains relatively strong, these economies continue to struggle with capital outflows, limited foreign reserves, and fragile investor confidence.
