Defending champion Matthew Naumec right back in hunt for Mass Amateur title

Boston Globe08-07-2025
After snagging the final spot in match play last year before rolling to the title, Naumec is trying to make his life easier this summer. He wrote five birdies on his card, including three on the first four holes, and finished with a tough par.
Lenane, the 2023 New England Amateur champion and winner of the Mass Amateur Public Links last year, rolled in a 17-footer on the par-3 third hole to start well. He actually got to 5-under with a birdie on 15, but three-putted the 18th for bogey.
'I feel like my game's in a really good spot, and I just hit it really well off the tee and into the green, and gave myself a lot of looks,' said Lenane, who just finished his junior year at North Carolina State.

Johnson meanwhile found all 18 greens in regulation en route to his 68.
'It feels really good that everything kind of clicked on the same day,' Johnson said. 'Still got tomorrow before you move on, but it feels good to have a good first round and be able to build on that.'

One shot behind the leading trio is Trevor Drew (Long Meadow GC), the rising Western Kentucky sophomore who was bogey free through 12 holes.
Recent Fordham graduate Jake Mrva (Worcester CC) rode the GreatHorse rollercoaster: bogeying three of the first six h holes, but rallying with a birdie-birdie-birdie-eagle stretch around the turn. He finished at 2-under 70.
Two other former MassAm champions are in the top 10, with Matt Parziale (Thorny Lea GC) and Ben Spitz (George Wright) tied for ninth at even par.
The second and final round of stroke play is Tuesday, and if there's a tie for the 32nd and final match play spot, there will be a sudden-death playoff after stroke play ends.

Bears GM Ryan Poles addresses recent contract extension

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles was recently signed to a contract extension that will align him with head coach Ben Johnson, for the foreseeable future, in an effort to establish a culture inside Halas Hall. As the team continued to have turnover at the general manager and head coaching positions, there was not clear alignment on both sides until now with Poles and Johnson as both are under contract through 2029. Speaking to the media for the first time since signing his extension, Poles explained how he feels the alignment with Johnson will go and how things should work between them. Wanting to just be present in his support for his new head coach, Poles is putting the team and organization first. "Contract that came out while we were on break, I'm not going to get into details on that," Poles said Tuesday. "I am excited about the alignment and stability that we have within our leadership group here. I have an unbelievable group of people that support me, believe in me, work with me that help drive what we're doing with our roster and the football team. My sole focus right now is supporting Ben, his coaching staff, our players, and our entire organization and our entire football operation." Getting Poles and Johnson lined up together should build faith and confidence in the organization from a player and fan perspective, but the results will have to be there, as well. The other side of the equation is that if the success doesn't come sooner than later, both Johnson and Poles could find themselves on the chopping block together. Jimmie Johnson says he could run more NASCAR Cup races in 2026

Seven-time Cup champion Jimmie Johnson, who has run only two Cup races this season, says 'there's a chance that I run more races next year.' One of those races, he hopes, will be the inaugural street race at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego next June. That event has special meaning for Johnson, who grew up in El Cajon, California, about 15 miles east of San Diego. Dustin Long, While San Diego would be a special place for Johnson to run his final Cup race next Father's Day (June 21), the co-owner of Legacy Motor Club said he still wants to race more in NASCAR's premier series even as he's set to turn 50 in September. 'I want to keep going,' Johnson said in response to a question from NBC Sports about his future plans. 'I want to stay in a car. I think it's good for us. 'We're hopeful to have a third charter. Need to start building a team. There's a chance that I run more races next year if we have a third charter on the docket and have a sponsor to bring along, team members to groom, a crew chief to get reps, a driver to get reps. There's a lot of scenarios that are in play. I'm hopeful I can keep going. 'I certainly don't want to feed you guys a line of BS here. There is also a scenario where (making San Diego his final Cup start) would make sense. We've put zero effort into the idea yet at this point. I have more years in me. I want to keep going.' Legacy Motor Club hopes to have a third charter next year but that could depend on the court system. Legacy Motor Club has filed a lawsuit against Rick Ware Racing, alleging that Rick Ware Racing is backing out of an agreement signed in March to sell Legacy Motor Club a charter. Rick Ware Racing claims the wrong charter number is listed in the agreement. A trial is scheduled to begin Jan. 26, 2026. Legacy Motor Club filed a lawsuit July 16 against former Spire Motorsports co-owner T.J. Puchyr, who told The Associated Press in June that he had entered into an agreement to purchase Rick Ware Racing. Legacy Motor Club accuses Puchyr of tortious interference after he helped broker the deal between Legacy Motor Club and Rick Ware Racing. Erik Jones and John Hunter Nemechek are Legacy Motor Club's full-time drivers.
