Guardians' José Ramírez sidelined with bruised forearm after being hit by pitch

CLEVELAND (AP) — Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez is not in the lineup for Friday night's game against the St. Louis Cardinals due to a bruised right forearm.
Ramírez was hit by a pitch by Toronto's Kevin Gausman during the fourth inning of Thursday's game. That came after Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. was hit by a fastball from Cleveland's Tanner Bibee in the third inning and left the game with a bruised forearm.
It is only the third time Ramírez has been out of the lineup and first since May 3 at Toronto.
Manager Stephen Vogt said Ramírez's status is day-to-day but he is hopeful he can return to the lineup on Saturday.
Ramírez is sixth in the majors with a .317 batting average and tied for sixth with 21 stolen bases. He is a finalist to start for the American League in the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta.

X-rays didn't reveal a fracture, but manager John Schneider originally was going to be cautious and start Clement at first base. With runners on first and second with two outs in the first, Springer lined a single to center fielder Ceddanne Rafaela. Guerrero Jr., who was on second, tried to score and was called out on Rafaela's throw home to catcher Connor Wong. Toronto challenged, and replay showed Wong missed on the tag, overturning the call. Key stat This marks the first six-game losing streak for Boston since Sept. 26, 2022. Up next RHP Chris Bassitt (7-3, 3.61 ERA) is set to start to make his 17th start of the season for the Blue Jays on Saturday. Far from their best, Dodgers find a way to beat Royals and move into MLB wins lead
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Dave Roberts has a high bar for his $400 million baseball team. Sure, the Dodgers entered Friday winners of 13 of their 17, tied for the best overall record in baseball, and leading the National League West by six games. Sure, they already have one guaranteed All-Star in Shohei Ohtani, and seven other finalists who advanced to the second stage of fan voting that will begin next week. But, in the eyes of their manager, 'I still just don't believe we're playing our best baseball,' Roberts said Friday afternoon. 'I don't think we've played complete baseball for a stretch.' On Friday night, the Dodgers still weren't at their best. Dustin May managed just four innings in a four-run start. The lineup produced only four total hits. Teoscar Hernández made a defensive blunder in the outfield. And the bullpen danced in and out of trouble down the stretch. But right now, amid this soft portion of the team's schedule, flawed performances have often still been enough. And in Friday's 5-4 win over the badly slumping Kansas City Royals, that once again proved to be the case. For all the Dodgers' shortcomings, they did just enough to compensate in a series opener at Kauffman Stadium. May gave up a run in the first after letting three straight batters reach with two outs … but not before Ohtani opened the scoring with a leadoff blast. Hernández let a hard-hit but very-much-catchable line drive get over his head in right field in the third, fueling a three-run Royals rally that was punctuated by Bobby Witt Jr.'s two-run blast … but that was sandwiched by a two-run Max Muncy homer in the second, and a game-tying triple from Ohtani in the fifth. Mookie Betts eventually put the Dodgers in front one at-bat after Ohtani's triple, singling him home to give the Dodgers a 5-4 lead. And though May's high pitch count forced him to exit after early, a worn-down Dodgers bullpen patched together five scoreless frames, escaping their biggest jam in the ninth when closer Tanner Scott induced a game-ending double-play with the bases loaded. It wasn't pretty, but it was still enough to move the Dodgers into sole possession of the best record in the majors at 52-31. That extended stretch of dominance is still eluding them. But for now, they're finding ways to win anyway.

Marcus Stroman to return to Yankees' rotation after missing 2 1/2 months with knee injury
NEW YORK (AP) — Marcus Stroman will be activated by the New York Yankees to start on Sunday after missing 2 1/2 months with left knee inflammation. Stroman threw a side session Friday and manager Aaron Boone made the announcement after the Yankees' beat the Athletics 3-0 in a series opener. 'We wanted to see him today, make sure he's in a good spot, good with his 'pen and everything,' Boone said. 'So just checking the boxes.' Stroman has not pitched for the Yankees since allowing five runs in two-thirds of an inning against the San Francisco Giants on April 11 when he threw 46 pitches in a steady rain. He was placed on the 15-day injured list the next day with what Boone hoped at the time would be a short-term absence. On May 9, Stroman experienced discomfort in his knee after throwing a batting practice session in Tampa, Florida. He did not begin a minor league rehabilitation assignment until June 11. In three rehab appearances with Double-A Somerset, Stroman was 0-1 with a 6.97 ERA. He made his final rehab start on Wednesday and allowed five runs, 10 hits and two walks over 3 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers' Erie Seawolves of the Eastern League. The Yankees placed No. 5 starter Ryan Yarbrough on the injured list Sunday with a strained right oblique and started Allan Winans on Monday in Cincinnati. Stroman turned 34 on May 1 and is in the second season of a two-year contract guaranteeing $37 million. The right-hander's deal includes a $16 million conditional player option for 2026 that could be exercised if he pitches in at least 140 innings this year. Last season, Stroman was 10-9 with a 4.31 ERA in 29 starts and one relief appearance over 154 2/3 innings, his most since 2021 with the Mets.
