Mangaluru: Pooja B, a resident of Anadka, Perlampady in Puttur, earned a place in the India Book of Records (IBR) for her miniature artwork. An MCom graduate, Pooja was recognised as an IBR Achiever for painting a vibrant Kathakali dance face mask on a groundnut, measuring just 1.4cm in length, in three minutes and 30 seconds.
She told TOI that her passion for painting began early, though she was never able to attend formal art classes. "During the Covid-19 lockdown, I started experimenting with portraits and soon began receiving orders," she said.
For the past two years, however, Pooja had one goal in mind, creating a unique record. "I kept thinking, what could I do that was different? I knew it had to be either miniature or massive. My mother suggested I try painting on a groundnut," she recalled.
After multiple trials on 10 to 12 peeled nuts, Pooja settled on the Kathakali face mask as her subject. "I have chosen it because of its vibrant colours and intricate design. It was not easy, but I wanted to showcase something striking," she said.
Pooja has also applied to the World Book of Records and is awaiting confirmation. "My next goal is to create something on a much larger scale," she said, while also preparing for the UGC NET exam. She hopes to popularise groundnut miniature art further.
