Chinese AI expert warns of ‘existential risks' when large models begin to deceive

Failing to address the risks posed by deceptive, out-of-control
artificial intelligence (AI) could leave humans facing 'existential risks', a leading Chinese computer scientist and AI expert has warned.
Andrew Yao Chi-chih, dean of Tsinghua University's College of AI, told an on-campus forum on Monday that the industry had seen multiple instances of deceptive behaviour by large language models (LLMs).
'Once large models become sufficiently intelligent, they will deceive people,' Yao said at the forum themed 'Ethical Singularity in the AI Era', while calling for attention to be paid to the 'existential risks' arising from such problems.

One such risk was the loss of control of the LLMs as general AI capabilities advanced rapidly, Yao was quoted as saying by state-backed media outlet The Paper.
Yao – a Chinese Academy of Sciences academician and 2000 Turing Award winner – cited the case of an LLM that accessed internal company emails to threaten a supervisor and prevent itself from being shut down.
This kind of behaviour, he argued, already showed that AI was beginning to 'cross boundaries' and was becoming increasingly dangerous.
China – the public and government agencies alike – has been in the grip of an AI frenzy since the Chinese start-up DeepSeek launched a chatbot in January to rival US giants such as ChatGPT, stunning the tech world.
Authorities strongly support the expansion of AI adoption and have significantly increased investment in the sector, making AI development a national priority backed by substantial incentives.

Wang, an assistant investigator at the National Institute of Biological Sciences in Beijing, said the team would continue their research to determine when mice lost their ability to regenerate during evolution 'The ability to regenerate appears to contribute to the survival of animals,' he said in an interview. 'Why was this ability lost as species evolved?'

Hong Kong's feral pigeon population drops 11% in hotspots amid feeding ban

Hong Kong has recorded a roughly 11 per cent drop in the number of feral pigeons found at common gathering spots after an expanded no-feeding law took effect, according to authorities who are planning to use artificial intelligence (AI) patrol robots to enhance enforcement. The number of feral pigeons stood at about 12,090 during the first quarter of this year, down by about 11 per cent from around 13,520 in the previous three months, across 140 spots in the city where birds gathered or caused a nuisance, according to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department. Food left by people for the birds was found at 30 of the 140 spots during the first three months of this year, down from 37 during the fourth quarter of 2024. The department carried out a citywide study over the two quarters, with researchers conducting on-site inspections and recording the number of feral pigeons spotted. 'As various departments continue to strengthen enforcement to combat illegal feeding activities, we expect the problem of feral pigeons gathering in urban areas and the nuisance they cause to continue to improve,' said Dr Jeremy Ho Hon-pong, senior veterinary officer of animal health at the department. The Wild Animals Protection (Amendment) Ordinance 2024 took effect on August 1 of last year, expanding the citywide prohibition on feeding wild animals to cover feral pigeons. The revised law is part of the city's efforts to curb illegal feeding activities and improve environmental hygiene.

A humanoid robot from the Chinese firm Shenzhen Dobot successfully cooked a steak – even sprinkling salt with its fingers – while being remotely controlled by an operator 1,800km away using a virtual reality (VR) headset. Advertisement A video of the feat, published on Friday on the company's official WeChat account, showcased its latest technology – which could eventually disrupt how humans perform housework, conduct surgeries, inspect nuclear plants and even explore outer space. The cooking was performed by Dobot Atom, the company's first humanoid robot, which was launched in March. While the robot was in Shandong province, it was remotely controlled from Guangdong province – 1,800km away. The video showed the robot replicating the engineer's movements as he wore a VR headset to capture his hand gestures while monitoring the counter in front of the robot.
