Pearly-Thinaah's BAM contract to be finalised before Japan Open

The Sun2 days ago
THE future of Malaysia's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan and M. Thinaah, with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will be decided before the Japan Open, scheduled for July 15.
BAM President Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz stated that both players agreed to this timeline during a recent engagement session.
Zafrul mentioned that only a few issues remain unresolved between BAM and the players before a final decision can be made.
'We are close to finalising it. Our discussion only has one or two issues left that I believe we can resolve, God willing.
'But the time given, I set it just now, and they also agreed that it should be settled before the Japan Open, and we will make an announcement,' he said during a press conference at the Badminton Academy of Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara.
Media reports had previously indicated that the pair had not renewed their contract with BAM, which expired last December.
Despite the uncertainty, Pearly-Thinaah have maintained strong form, clinching the Thailand Open title in May.
When questioned about potential salary adjustments, Zafrul acknowledged that compensation discussions are typical in negotiations.
'I think in any contract negotiation, there is always discussion. To me, what is fair is we need to value them accordingly, their contribution.
'And also what is important to me is that when we value someone or in this case the pair, we also need to put targets. So if they do better, we should pay them more,' he explained.

Cheah Soon Kit to coach in Europe for short stint, keeps location under wraps

KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — After years away from the court, national badminton legend Datuk Cheah Soon Kit is set to make a 'quiet' return to coaching, this time in Europe. The former national men's doubles coach, who last served with the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) in 2018, has confirmed that he will be away next week for a one-and-a-half-month coaching stint. 'I haven't gone out and coached anywhere yet (after 2018). 'It is just for a short term and friendly invitation. Not for a big team but a badminton club there,' he said. Soon Kit was speaking to reporters at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing ceremony and the official launch of Sentuhan Wira, an upcoming movie that will chronicle Malaysia's historic 1992 Thomas Cup triumph. The 1996 Olympic Games silver medallist said his decision to accept the role came after persistent approaches from the club. When pressed to reveal the country where he will continue his coaching journey, the 57-year-old chose to keep the destination under wraps. Sentuhan Wira is the brainchild of Soon Kit and another national badminton legend, Datuk Rashid Sidek. As advisers to the production, both of them were directly involved in the development of the script and technical research on the matches, ensuring that the spirit and historical accuracy of Malaysia's 1992 Thomas Cup victory are portrayed authentically and emotionally. The film is expected to begin shooting this November and will be released in cinemas next year. The signing ceremony was witnessed by National Film Development Corporation of Malaysia chairman Datuk Hans Isaac. — Bernama

Rashid backs Zii Jia and Co to end Thomas Cup wait

KUALA LUMPUR: Former world No. 1 Datuk Rashid Sidek believes Malaysia must begin early preparations if they are to reclaim the Thomas Cup — a title the nation last won in 1992. Rashid, who played a key role in that historic triumph 33 years ago, is confident the current squad has the depth and balance to challenge for the crown at next year's tournament in Denmark. "If we're serious about winning back the Thomas Cup, this is the moment," said Rashid at a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing on Wednesday for the upcoming film Sentuhan Wira, which will commemorate the 1992 victory. "Our team have more depth than in past editions. We now have two strong men's singles players in Lee Zii Jia and Leong Jun Hao, and the doubles pairs are showing consistency. If everyone maintains their level, our chances are bright." Malaysia famously edged Indonesia 3-2 in a dramatic final at Stadium Negara in 1992, with Rashid playing a pivotal role. "I can still clearly see (Cheah) Soon Kit and (Soo) Beng Kiang falling to the ground. That was when we knew we were champions," he recalled. Since then, China have dominated the tournament, lifting the trophy 11 times, including at the most recent edition in Chengdu last year, where they beat Indonesia 3-1 in the final. Malaysia reached the semi-finals. However, Rashid believes a window of opportunity is opening, with traditional powerhouses like Indonesia and Japan undergoing generational transitions. He urged the BA of Malaysia (BAM) and all stakeholders to stay focused and ensure the team is physically and mentally prepared. "In a team event like the Thomas Cup, it's not just about having the strongest players on paper. It's about unity," said Rashid. "If we're truly prepared, I believe we can make history again." Sentuhan Wira is expected to begin production later this year.

Rashid says Thomas Cup success story will come alive via "Sentuhan Wira" movie

Great time: (File photo) The 1992 Thomas Cup winners (from left) Kwan Yoke Meng, Rashid Sidek, Wong Ewe Mun, Cheah Soon Kit, Tun Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali, Razif Sidek, Foo Kok Keong, Soo Beng Kiang and Rahman Sidek gathered during a hi-tea reunion at Pulse Grande Hotel in Putrajaya. PETALING JAYA: It has been 33 years since Malaysia lifted the prestigious Thomas Cup in 1992 after edging out arch-rivals Indonesia 3-2 in a thrilling final at Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur. Now, more than three decades later, that historic triumph will be immortalised on the silver screen in a sports epic titled *Sentuhan Wira*. The film is the brainchild of two national legends – Datuk Cheah Soon Kit and Datuk Rashid Sidek – who are also serving as advisors. Both were directly involved in script development, technical research, and ensuring the authenticity and emotional depth of the 1992 victory are captured accurately. Produced by Victory Pictures, the project was officially launched in Kuala Lumpur yesterday and will be directed by Lenny Ooi. Meanwhile, filming for the movie is expected to begin around November. Rashid, a key member of the victorious team, is relieved that the story is finally being brought to life, calling it a long-overdue tribute to one of the country's greatest sporting moments. 'There are many behind-the-scenes stories that the public may not know, and we believe these can serve as inspiration,' said Rashid. 'This is more than just a badminton film. It's a story of struggle, belief and national pride. We hope the younger generation will feel the same spirit and continue carrying it forward.' An open nationwide casting call will be held soon to discover fresh local talent for supporting roles, while the main characters will be portrayed by established actors. The 1992 squad featured Rashid Sidek, Foo Kok Keong and Kwan Yoke Meng in the singles, with Razif Sidek-Jalani Sidek and Cheah Soon Kit-Soo Beng Kiang in the doubles. Their success was also credited to the late Tan Sri Elyas Omar, then Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) president, whose foresight brought in Datuk Punch Gunalan as team manager and enlisted top Chinese coaches Han Jian, Yang Yang and Chen Chengjie.
