Former ESPN host details firing after support for women against trans athletes: 'I thought this was sports'

Fox News16-07-2025
Samantha Ponder has been quiet about her firing from ESPN, until now.
Ponder had been vocal about transgender athletes in women's sports on social media back in 2023, which she said prompted a warning from ESPN executives.
Ponder told Sage Steele on the latter's podcast that she shared Paula Scanlan's "story" about swimming against Lia Thomas, but then, "one of the top, top, top" bosses reached out to both former ESPN employees.
"I didn't really think that was going to get much of a response, but it did," Ponder said. "They were uncomfortable with me talking about the trans women in women's sports issue and that they weren't going to allow me to misgender people."
Ponder then said she got a "detailed email" from execs that described "anything I had ever tweeted or favorite that they thought was offensive and warned me."
"I knew then I was kind of on the clock, if you will," Ponder said.
Ponder had kept quiet until last summer, even opting not to make a video about Riley Gaines when an ESPN initiative was for its female employees to record a video about an inspirational woman.
That is, until Imane Khelif caught her attention.
Ponder had shared her Olympic opponent Angela Carini's quotes about having "enough" of Khelif in the ring. Khelif was previously barred from competing in another boxing tournament due to failed gender eligibility testing.
"ENOUGH is what all of us should be saying!! Proud of this woman," Ponder posted at the time.
"And the next week, got a text that said, 'Can you jump on a call with this person and this person in like an hour.' And one of the bosses is someone I never hear from, and I was like, 'This is it,'" Ponder said.
Ponder said that she believes other factors led to her eventual firing, including potential cheaper alternatives, while Ponder said she wanted to have a work-life balance with her family.
"But the timing of it almost certainly was," Ponder, who revealed that top ESPN execs actually agreed with her on the issue, said.
Ponder then said getting let go was "one of the best thing that ever happened to me."
"I was on that hamster wheel, and I was not going to jump off on my own. I needed to get kicked off. As much as the part of the reasoning behind it I think is legit crazy, I feel no bitterness or even frankly sadness. I had a great career. I was 20 years in that business. I met some awesome people, and there are still some really great people there. Never thought this would kind of be the way out, but I should have spoken up a long time before. I should have been a lot more courageous when I knew what was right," Ponder said.
Ponder questioned why she was essentially barred from discussing the issue.
"You are not allowed to speak about any other issue [other than sports]. But I thought this was sports," Ponder continued. "We're talking about female collegiate athletes, Olympic athletes, and it's wrong to shine a spotlight on that and give another voice, another opinion. I wasn't against debate or healthy discussion. I just didn't want anybody telling me, 'No, no, no, you can't talk about that.' I wasn't really giving my own opinions about it, as much as I was saying, 'Listen to these girls, they're in the locker rooms. Why do their opinions not deserve a platform when we're giving awards for Women's History Month to someone born male?' I couldn't understand it, I still don't understand it."
ESPN declined to comment.
Ponder is married to former NFL quarterback, Christian Ponder.

3 observations from Day 9 of Buffalo Bills training camp

Buffalo Bills 2025 NFL training camp is rolling on and will be watched under a microscope each and every day. Throughout practices, updates are shared during the workouts which make for intriguing and important notes. In terms of Day 9 of training camp, what stood out the most? Here are three observations from the ninth day of Bills training camp: James Cook is out The big news on Sunday was running back James Cook finally sitting out a practice as he looks for a new contract from the Bills. He has previously worked out at every practice, but was on the sideline on Day 9. When asked about why he sat out, Cook reportedly just said one word: "business." Wide receiver a concern During the Bills' Friday practice, wide receiver Khalil Shakir was injured. Turns out he will be out several weeks according to head coach Sean McDermott. Keon Coleman has managed to stay healthy during training camp, but aside from him, injuries have been found up-and-down the receiver depth chart. Shakir was Buffalo's top receiver last season. Epenesa sighting Pass rusher AJ Epenesa has had a quiet training camp and overshadowed by new additions at his position such as Joey Bosa. Epenesa caught attention on Sunday. The team's website noted that Epenesa was swatting passes at the line and ever had a pick-six interception during practice. The New Playbook For Personalized Fan Experiences

Ab Gaur is the Founder & CEO of Verticurl and also serves as Ogilvy's Chief Data and Technology Officer. Fandom is a powerful force. It's a tremendous outlet for energy, enthusiasm and community, creating connections that otherwise wouldn't exist and unlocking unparalleled economic potential. It also has many expressions. Fandom encompasses support for sports teams and players, as well as for musicians, entertainers, books, movies and other forms of popular culture. While sports are not the only fandom that matters, the industry's lucrative television contracts, loyal customers, strong investment returns and fan engagement models make it a compelling case study in the power of fandom for sports entities and industries with their own fans to emulate and learn from in building sustainable and highly engaged communities. In many ways, the sports industry serves as a case study in fandom's potential to drive significant economic growth and cultural engagement, offering illustrative lessons for the industry itself and other fandom entities seeking to cultivate loyal communities, generate substantial revenue and create lasting cultural impact. Understanding Modern Fandom Today's fans, much like consumers across all industries, are no longer content with passive spectatorship. They crave deeper connections with their favorite teams and players, seek personalized experiences and desire opportunities to weave their fandom into the fabric of their personal identities. It's both a challenge and an opportunity that is best accomplished by unlocking fandom's full potential and creating "immersive fandom.' This is an environment where being a fan is an active, engaging and integral part of life, fostered by rich, dynamic relationships with the team, the broader fan community and the brand itself. As chief data and technology officer at Ogilvy One—where I work to find data-driven relationships at the intersection of creativity and technology—I've had the privilege of leading efforts to innovate and deliver personalized fan engagement solutions for major sports leagues globally. Based on those experiences, here are three strategies that brands, business leaders and entertainment entities can take to achieve immersive fandom: 1. Build and monetize. Data is an abundant resource, and entertainment entities collect valuable insights at every customer touchpoint. In other words, the problem isn't volume; it's fragmentation. Information about ticket purchases, merchandise sales, app interactions and marketing engagement often resides in separate, disconnected silos. As a result, brands have a disjointed view of their customers, which produces an incomplete understanding of individual fans. To this end, experiences and interactions feel generic and mundane rather than novel and individualistic. For one leading North American sports league that I worked with, the challenge was to break down data silos and create a unified view of their fans across the league. They aimed to move from siloed communications to 1:1 real-time fan journeys and from fragmented physical and digital experiences to connected experiences. With an integrated data platform, the league was able to create 360-degree fan profiles that provide strategic insights and measured impact, informing the next best message and content. This approach can reduce time to market and enterprise costs through orchestrated marketing experiences that are governed centrally and executed locally. To try it yourself, start by unifying and activating your data. Then, consolidate all available fan data—including demographic details, behavioral patterns, transaction histories and stated preferences—into a comprehensive profile. This actionable data will help you understand who the fans are, what they value, how they interact across various channels and what motivates their loyalty. This process allows you to move beyond guesswork to intimately understand fan segments and individual preferences, which enables the first wave of targeted personalization efforts and helps identify previously unseen monetization avenues. 2. Deliver personalized, timely experiences. With a unified data foundation in place, the next step is to move beyond one-size-fits-all messaging and cultivate truly individualized engagement. Today's sports fans expect interactions that recognize their unique history with the team, acknowledge their specific preferences and are relevant to their current context. To achieve this, leverage the latest technologies—yes, AI—to deliver these personalized experiences at the scale required by large fan bases. These technologies can analyze the unified fan data to predict individual needs, anticipate behaviors and automate the delivery of tailored fan journeys. For instance, Wimbledon integrated AI into its fan experience to create personalized video highlights, spoken-word commentary and interactive match summaries across its owned platforms. This produced 'double-digit growth in engagement and content consumption across its owned platforms.' These personalized and timely interactions significantly enhance engagement (and revenue potential) across the entire fan lifecycle. 3. Embed measurements, governance and optimization. What gets measured matters, and what matters is improvement over time, ethical data governance and continued improvement through optimization. Building a sophisticated fan engagement model is not a one-time project; it's an ongoing commitment to refinement and improvement. This starts with strong data governance frameworks. They ensure the accuracy, consistency, security and regulatory compliance of fan data. This mitigates risk and builds and maintains the trust needed to ensure that fans willingly share their information and continue engaging with the personalized experiences that information enables. Couple data governance efforts with analytics and reporting that measure the effectiveness of their personalized engagement strategies and understand the return on investment. Metrics worth measuring include: • Acquisition costs • Engagement rates across various channels • Conversion rates on personalized offers • Customer lifetime value • Overall fan sentiment. This work is never finished. Fan engagement strategies that work well today can become stale tomorrow as expectations and desires inevitably change over time. Rewards Worth The Work Tapping into fandom's full potential is hard work. It's also worth it. The rewards are transformative: Deeply entrenched fan loyalty, the conversion of casual supporters into passionate advocates, the creation of new and diversified revenue streams and the establishment of a sustainable competitive advantage. Fandom is a powerful force. Immersive fandom is the best way to make the most of this valuable asset. Wild brawl breaks out among fans in stands at WWE SummerSlam, caught on video

A large fight occurred outside the ring at WWE's SummerSlam on Sunday, and it was not the Cody Rhodes-John Cena street fight. A video posted to X captured what appeared to be three female fans going at it in the stands, and then a male fan grabbing one of the women and pulling her away from behind. Another man appeared to grab the male fan, and two women from the ruckus exchanged some hair-pulling and punches. A total of six fans appeared to be directly involved, although only one woman was seen throwing punches in the video. However, the woman in the red pants appeared to land a kick on one of the men after security settled most of the madness down. It is unclear what provoked the brouhaha. There were 60,531 people in attendance for night two of the event at MetLife Stadium, the home of the New York Giants and Jets. In all, attendance was listed as 113,722 for the weekend. The event saw both of its top championships change hands a total of three times. On night one, CM Punk defeated Gunther to win the World Heavyweight Championship. However, his glory was short-lived after his longtime rival Seth Rollins cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase after revealing he was not injured, hitting Punk with a curb stomp to win the title. On Sunday, Cody Rhodes defeated John Cena to take back the WWE Championship, which he had lost to Cena at WrestleMania 41. The two shared an emotional moment in the ring. Afterward, Brock Lesnar surprised the entire crowd and attacked Cena, re-igniting one of the company's greatest rivalries of all time. WWE's "Monday Night Raw" is sure to revisit these storylines at 8 p.m. ET.
