Govt sets aside RM7mil for rice irrigation during drought

The Star03-06-2025

BAGAN SERAI: The government has allocated RM7mil for infrastructure upgrades to minimise the impact of drought on key rice production areas, according to Datuk Arthur Joseph Kurup.
The Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister said the focus will be on irrigation systems, the primary water source for crops.
'It is mainly done to ensure that the water channels are functioning and can deliver water to padi plots, even if the water volume is slightly lower than usual.
'This is also one of our ways to minimise the potential negative effects on farmers' income, especially during the drought season,' he said after launching the 2025 Perak state-level Agricultural Machinery and Equipment handover ceremony at Dewan Dato' Zainal Abidin Zin here yesterday, Bernama reported.
On Monday, the Meteorological Department said six areas in Peninsular Malaysia would be at Level 1 status for three days due to the ongoing hot weather.
The affected areas include Larut and Matang, Kuala Kangsar, Perak Tengah in Perak; Machang and Kuala Krai in Kelantan; and Bandar Baharu in Kedah.
In a separate matter, Arthur said that his ministry will strengthen collaboration with relevant enforcement agencies to curb cattle smuggling activities from Thailand, which are believed to threaten the country's food security.
He said enforcement actions against individuals involved in unethical activities are under the jurisdiction of the respective state governments.
'Therefore, a comprehensive engagement session between the state and federal governments is essential to harmonise laws and prevent conflicts, which could undermine the nation's food biosecurity,' Arthur said.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The government has completed the draft for the Senior Citizens Bill, which aims to protect the rights and well-being of the elderly, and is expected to be tabled in Parliament next year. At the moment, she said, the ministry is engaging in further consultations with industry players and state governments, including those in Sabah and Sarawak. Eco Forum Global Guiyang 2025 To Focus On Green Transformation

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) -- The Guizhou Provincial Government has announced that the Eco Forum Global Guiyang 2025 will be convened from July 5 to 6 in the provincial capital of Guiyang, following approval by the State Council of China. Hosted by the People's Government of Guizhou Province, the two-day event will carry the theme "Harmonious Coexistence between Humans and Nature – Discussing Global Development and Green Transformation" and is expected to draw approximately 800 delegates, according to a statement. As China's sole national and international forum focused on the theme of eco-civilisation, the Eco Forum Global Guiyang has steadily built its profile over the course of 12 previous editions, earning growing attention on the global stage. Organisers aim to position this year's iteration as a dynamic platform for dialogue, partnership, and actionable outcomes, particularly in the realm of sustainable development and ecological governance. Preparations for the forum are reportedly progressing in an orderly fashion, with a rich programme of activities scheduled, including the opening ceremony, thematic forums, off-site visits, promotional displays, green investment promotion, and the debut of new environmental protection products and technologies. Notably, this year marks a significant step forward in international collaboration. For the first time since 2018, international organisations will play a substantive role in shaping the forum's agenda. Of the 20 planned thematic forums, 11 will feature participation by international entities, with four forums to be independently hosted by these organisations. The forum also serves as an extension of China's engagement with major multilateral climate processes. It is expected to respond to key themes arising from global environmental conferences such as COP16 and COP29, with a focus on practical cooperation in areas including climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation. A core objective of the 2025 edition is to share China's experience in eco-civilisation and green transformation, particularly with developing nations across the Global South, reinforcing cooperation in sustainable development. The forum also seeks to catalyse global efforts to address what it identifies as the three pressing environmental challenges. Through this initiative, Guizhou is positioning itself as a hub for international green collaboration and innovation, seeking to 'pool wisdom' and 'attract investment', empowering new quality productivity and high-quality development.

Hamidin Returns To FAM As Honorary President

SUBANG JAYA, June 30 (Bernama) -- Speculation over Tan Sri Hamidin Mohd Amin's return to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) has been put to rest following his appointment as honorary president during the association's Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) today. FAM president Datuk Mohd Joehari Mohd Ayub, who chaired the meeting, said the appointment was based on Hamidin's credibility, vast experience and significant contributions to the development of football both domestically and internationally over the past 30 years. Speculation over Hamidin's appointment as honorary president arose after he announced he would not defend his position as FAM president at the Election Congress in January. bootstrap slideshow 'We do need Tan Sri's presence, particularly given his extensive network with the Federation of International Football Associations (FIFA), ASEAN Football Federation (AFF), Asian Football Confederation (AFC), as well as with government bodies and the private sector — we need those connections. 'His appointment as honorary president also adds value to the current leadership of FAM,' he said at a press conference after the 2025 FAM First EGM here today. Mohd Joehari said there is no issue of overlapping powers between him as FAM president and Hamidin. 'Our roles are different. Tan Sri's function is more advisory, and he also serves as an ambassador for FAM. 'Like I said, it's not a matter of overshadowing or anything like that. What we see is how this can contribute positively to FAM — and to me, we have to remain objective,' he said. He said the appointment received unanimous support from all delegates present.
