'They used the Liverpool goal as the wake up signal'

BBC News20-05-2025

Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "There have been a lot of highs and lows throughout the season. It is important you don't overreact and it is important to stay grounded and humble because there is still one game to go. But I'm really proud of the team."It's not only about playing a football game and the tactical side but it's about the mental side too. We only can be successful if you stick together and we proved that so we are very happy."The players changed the intensity on the pitch. They used the goal as the wake-up signal. Liverpool were impressive in the first 20 minutes but I was happy with the reaction."On Brajan Gruda's performance: "That was his best game, yes. It's important to understand that behind the player is a person and it's a very young person. He comes from a different country and he's away from his family. He never gave up and always tried to improve in training and showed character. He gets the reward for all his hard work."On 17-year-old Harry Howell: "It's a special player for his young age. I always give young players the chance because it's not about your age if you're good enough."Everyone knows their role, if you're a sub then you can come into the game. You always have to be ready to have an impact on it."Did you know?Brighton have come back to win three Premier League games this season when trailing at half-time, with only Fulham doing so more often (five).

Man Utd open to Andre Onana loan exit as Ruben Amorim identifies new No.1

Andre Onana has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Manchester United at Old Trafford and it appears that Ruben Amorim has finally decided what to do with him ahead of next term Manchester United are reportedly willing to sanction a loan move for Andre Onana after stumbling into a real issue regarding his future. The Cameroonian international has endured a tricky couple of seasons since his arrival from Inter Milan. High-profile errors have blighted his performances and put his position as number one in jeopardy. United are open to letting him leave and would apparently prefer a permanent sale. ‌ But Onana's high wages have made an exit this summer tricky and Red Devils chiefs are now having to get creative to move him on. According to The Sun, United are open to letting Onana leave on loan. ‌ Monaco - who have recently signed ex-United midfielder Paul Pogba - have been linked with a move but have struggled to get a deal over the line. It is said that United are now awaiting approaches and would prefer to send the 29-year-old to Europe as opposed to a Premier League rival. Speaking earlier this month, Onana appeared to hint that he was also open to an exit. He said: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" While Onana's future remains up in the air, United have already launched their search for a new number one. Aston Villa 's Emi Martinez remains their number one target but a deal for the 2022 World Cup winner is expected to be expensive. Other options include Botafogo's John Victor, Porto star Diogo Costa and Cruz Azul number one Kevin Mier. Former United stopper Ben Foster believes that Martinez would be the outstanding candidate should Onana be moved on. He said: 'It's a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he [Onana] hasn't done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United number one. ‌ 'I think he's got ability, and like so many other Man United players, he'd go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that's probably going to be the case with him as well. If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like Emi Martinez, they've got to go for it. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'You've got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno's going to be staying now. It's a great start to the transfer window for them.' Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football. Jurgen Klopp fires warning to Florian Wirtz over 'insane' £116m move to Liverpool... as ex-Reds boss gives his verdict on British record transfer

Jurgen Klopp has weighed in on Florian Wirtz 's 'insane' £116million move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen. The midfielder finally joined the Reds for a British record transfer fee earlier this month after a lengthy pursuit - which saw multiple bids rejected by Leverkusen - was drawn out for several weeks. Wirtz, 22, signed a five-year deal which will run through the summer of 2030, and he is expected to be a cornerstone in Arne Slot 's side for years to come. His first chance to impress in red may come just two weeks from now, with Liverpool set to face Preston North End in a pre-season friendly on July 13. After their run of friendlies, the Merseyside club will face Crystal Palace in the FA Community Shield final, before embarking on their Premier League title defence on the opening day of the 2025-26 season against Bournemouth at Anfield. But Klopp has cautioned Wirtz that if he doesn't start strongly, it will take only 'two or three games' for the pressure of his hefty transfer fee to start weighing on him. 'There's no question about it, it's an insane sum, and one that a player at Liverpool is aware of if things don't go well for two or three games,' the German veteran told Welt. 'We all agree that we're talking about a great player here. I know I once said that I'm out if we pay 100 million euros for a player. But the world is changing. That's just the way the market is. 'He's an outstanding player who can give any club something great. Whether he'll make the reigning English champions even better remains to be seen.' Klopp's comments are a touch more measured than when he broke his silence on Wirtz's transfer last week. He said then: 'This is going to be absolutely fantastic, I'm sure of it. 'It's very hard to strengthen a team when you're champions. But Liverpool have managed it.

Mikel Arteta accused of making Arsenal transfer mistake with £45m star

William Gallas has accused Mikel Arteta and Arsenal of making a potentially costly transfer mistake. The Premier League runners-up have been one of the more subdued clubs during the summer transfer window and are yet to make any signings. Arsenal are, however, set to welcome three new players to the Emirates Stadium in Martin Zubimendi, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Christian Norgaard. In terms of outgoings, Jorginho and Kieran Tierney have left on free transfers and Raheem Sterling has returned to Chelsea following his dismal loan spell. Thomas Partey also looks set to leave the club and Gallas believes it would be a mistake for Arsenal not to keep him at the Emirates Stadium. The Ghana international held talks over a contract extension following arguably his best season with Arsenal but is yet to reach an agreement with the Gunners. Reports claim Partey has now decided to leave, given his current contract expires next week and he has attracted interest from several European clubs. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Juventus have expressed interest in signing Partey, who has made 167 appearances for Arsenal since his £45m move from Atletico in 2020. 'I think with his quality, he could stay at Arsenal,' Gallas told Genting Casino. 'With what he has offered to the club over the last few years, he can easily stay. 'And with their depth right now, I think it is best to add, not replace. I'm not sure of the reasons why he might leave, but I'm not sure it would be the best thing if he left.' The signings of Zubimendi and Norgaard will compensate for Jorginho and Partey's departures from Arsenal. After signing those two midfielders and Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa, Arteta will prioritise a deal for a new striker, with Viktor Gyokeres and Benjamin Sesko high on his wishlist. 'Arsenal have been looking for a striker for, I don't know exactly how long, but a top class striker should have arrived at Arsenal two or three years ago,' Gallas added. 'They didn't sign one. They obviously didn't think it was that important to add a top class striker. 'And I think that, when you look at their season, unfortunately, they didn't want the Premier League badly enough on a couple of occasions where they came close – last season, and also two years ago. 'They didn't want it enough to go and add that last missing piece of the puzzle. So now they are being linked with strikers again, just like they were in January. 'I hope they do get one of the strikers they want, because I hope they want the same thing every fan wants, which is to win the Premier League next season. More Trending 'If they want to have a chance at winning the league next season, for me, it depends on if they go and sign a striker who knows the Premier League very well and has proven they can score the right amount of goals at the top level. 'And I think the only player who fits that description right now is Alexander Isak. 'I know it will cost a lot of money, but he constantly scores more than 20 goals and seems to keep improving each year in the Premier League. 'So Arsenal should break the bank for him. He is the last piece of the puzzle, I feel, a perfect striker.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
