Umno remembers attempted ban, rejects Dr M's invitation, says Dr Akmal

The Star05-06-2025

SHAH ALAM: Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh says Umno will not forget the historical attempt to ban the party by an individual who now invites Umno members to join a new movement, Sinar Harian reports.
The Malay language daily reported that the Umno Youth chief was referring to the invitation from former prime minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who urged Umno members to join the Malay Secretariat, a new political coalition purportedly established to champion the restoration of Malay political power.
"Thank you, Tun (Dr M), we appreciate the invitation. But we still remember what happened. The same person also wanted to ban Umno when they were in power," he said Thursday (June 5).
Dr Muhamad Akmal also told Sinar Harian that if the agenda of uniting the Malays is indeed a priority, it should be born out of sincerity for the sake of religion and race, not motivated by position or status.
"If there is a genuine desire to unite the race, let it come from a sincere heart out of love for religion and race, not merely to secure positions for oneself," he said.
Dr Mahathir had previously said that he was not inviting Umno as a party but welcomed any Umno members willing to join the Malay Secretariat.
According to Dr Mahathir, the Secretariat aims to restore the political dominance of Malays in the government, which he described as increasingly weak.

Suspended ex-Jempol MP Mohd Salim makes second bid to rejoin Umno, insists he's ‘proven my loyalty'

SEREMBAN, June 30 — Former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif has made a second bid to return to Umno after the party leaders signalled a softer stance. Mohd Salim, who was suspended for six years in January 2023 for breaching party discipline, said his first appeal was in 2024 and his second in April. 'I sincerely hope the party leadership will consider my appeals. 'Although I have been suspended, I have remained loyal to Umno and have been actively supporting members, especially in Jempol,' he was quoted as saying by The Star in an article today. He rubbished speculation that he would quit the party for another. 'Umno has been my party from day one. Although there had been lots of talk previously that I would quit the party and join another, I have proven my loyalty to Umno,' he was quoted as saying. In recent days, Umno's top two leaders indicated that they are open to reinstating several suspended veterans but required the affected members to make a formal application. Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said only two suspended members had formally applied for reinstatement: Mohd Salim and former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Tajuddin's suspension was lifted on November 24 last year, with his membership reinstated immediately. Zahid and his deputy Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan advised former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein to write in after Sembrong Umno called for the latter's six-year suspension to be lifted.

A- Grades Now Count As A for Matriculation Entry, Malaysian Chinese Thank MCA

Subscribe to our FREE Malaysian Chinese are thanking MCA after the government reversed its university matriculation policy to allow all 10A SPM students entry, including those with A- grades. It all started when 260 students who scored 10A in their SPM exams were initially rejected because some had A-s, despite Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's promise that all 10A students would get automatic entry. MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong jumped on the issue, revealing that his party fought for the students, The government's policy reversal on 25 June allowed A- grades to be considered equivalent to A grades, marking the first time in Malaysia's history that matriculation entry is determined purely by academic merit, regardless of race. Social media exploded with 'Thank you MCA' messages – a welcome change for the embattled party. The Ultimate Social Media Burn Speaking at a dinner in Melaka, Dr Wee addressed politicians rushing to claim credit with diplomatic restraint: 'Many people want to claim credit… Justice lies in the hearts of the people – feel free to claim credit.' 'When I saw these excellent students being shut out, my heart was bleeding,' Dr Wee said, adding there's no need for thanks since speaking up against injustice is simply his duty. The gratitude got so overwhelming that when DAP leaders posted on Facebook announcing the matriculation success, social media users flooded their comment sections with '谢谢马华' (Thank you MCA). Talk about awkward – like throwing a party and having guests thank the neighbour for organising everything. From 37 Seats to 2: Why This 'Thank You' Matters For MCA, this rare moment of public appreciation is precious – the party has watched its Chinese voter support shrink for years, with just two parliamentary seats currently from 37 in 1986. Whether this matriculation victory marks a political comeback or just a brief respite from irrelevance remains to be seen. Dr Wee made clear MCA won't stay quiet: 'MCA will not become a silent party and will play its role in oversight and checks and balances.' For now, they're probably just enjoying Chinese Malaysians actually saying 'thank you' instead of 'no thanks' at the ballot box. However, some Malaysians have expressed concern that matriculation programs, originally designed to help Malay and Bumiputra students, are now fully merit-based and open to all races, with fears that institutions like Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Parts of this story have been sourced from Share your thoughts with us via TRP's .

Mohd Salim appeals for reinstatement amid Umno suspension

SEREMBAN: Former Jempol MP Datuk Seri Mohd Salim Mohd Sharif hopes the Umno leadership will favourably consider his appeal following his suspension from the party. Mohd Salim said he had submitted a second appeal to have his suspension lifted in April following the first one last year. "I sincerely hope the party leadership will consider my appeals. "Although I have been suspended, I have remained loyal to Umno and have been actively supporting members, especially in Jempol," he said on Monday (June 10). Mohd Salim said he had never once considered quitting the party ever since he was suspended. "Umno has been my party from day one. "Although there had been lots of talk previously that I would quit the party and join another, I have proven my loyalty to Umno," he said. Mohd Salim was suspended for six years, along with several others, by the party in January 2023 for breaching party discipline. On Sunday, Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the party had only received applications from two members to have their suspensions lifted. Apart from Mohd Salim, the other application was from former Pasir Salak MP Datuk Seri Tajuddin Abdul Rahman. Umno's supreme council had, on Nov 24 last year, unanimously decided to lift Tajuddin's suspension, reinstating him as an Umno member, effective immediately. Tajuddin's membership was suspended for six years from Sept 2022 for criticising the party, including matters related to the timing of the 15th General Election (GE15). Last week, Ahmad Zahid said the party's supreme council will also look into a request by Sembrong Umno to lift the six-year suspension of former vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein after the party's political bureau reviews the motion. He said Hishamuddin had, however, yet to submit any appeal or apology over the matter.
