Fears for 100 jobs at Galway-based Romero Games
The firm has issued a statement outlining that its publisher has cancelled funding for a game that was currently in development.
The publisher is reported to be Microsoft which this week announced plans to cut around 9,000 jobs globally.
"We're currently evaluating next steps and working quickly to support our team," Romero Games said.
"It's an extremely difficult day, and we're heartbroken that it's come to this. If you know of any opportunities or ways you can help our incredible team, please reach out," the company said.
"This absolutely isn't a reflection of our team's work, performance, or the quality of the project itself," it added.
Romero Games describes itself as an independent game studio of over 100 developers founded in 2014 by award-winning game developers Brenda and John Romero.
John Romero is credited with helping to popularise the first-person shooter (FPS) genre and co-created hit games including Wolfenstein 3D and Doom.
Game Workers Unite Ireland (GWUI), which is a branch of the Financial Services Union (FSU), represents workers in the gaming sector.
The union has described the announcement by Romero Games as a devastating blow to staff.

Revenue seeks to wind up Dublin Beer Factory
A petition has been filed in the High Court by the Revenue's collector general, Joseph Howley, to have Dublin Beer Factory Holdings wound up. The firm has invested millions to build a microbrewery and visitor centre on Dublin's Parnell Street, which as of last year was still under construction. Efforts to contact the firm were unsuccessful. It is controlled by Dutch nationals Erald Holtrust and Willem David Theodorus Rietbergen. Mr Holtrust is the chief executive of Utrecht-based United Soft Drinks, which bills itself as the biggest privately-owned soft drinks company in Benelux. Other backers include Geoff Waddell. United Soft Drinks holds security over the property on Parnell Street and over other tangible fixed assets. Dublin Beer Factory Holdings had pledged last year that the visitor centre would be opening shortly and that it was near completion. Brands it intended to brew at the site included Dublin Blue lager. The latest set of publicly available accounts for Dublin Beer Factory Holdings show that as of the end of 2021, its assets under construction amounted to just under €9m. Its creditors at that time amounted to €13.1m. That included €10.2m owed to related parties and €1.7m in other investor loans. 'It is anticipated that funding of €1.4m will be required to bring the micro-brewery to a commission phase,' noted the accounts. 'An additional €2.2m will be required to complete the fit out of the visitor centre. 'Following delays caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2021, construction work on the brewery restarted in 2022 and it is now substantially complete and on track for commissioning before the end of 2022, with full commercial production expected to commence in early 2023,' the accounts added. 'The director also expects the visitor centre to open in 2023.' The winding-up petition against Dublin Beer Factory Holdings is due to be held on July 28. A number of firms have encountered difficulties in Ireland's crowded craft beer market. In April, an examiner was appointed to the company behind Killarney Brewing & Distilling Company, one of the country's largest independent breweries, just months after it successfully raised €3.5m from dozens of mostly Irish-American investors.

Jobs boost for Mayo as Hollister Ballina makes €80m investment
The company, which employs approximately 1,000 people in Ballina, has committed to a research and development investment and a digital transformation project that will 'to elevate Ballina into a global epicentre of expertise'. This project is supported by the Irish Government through IDA Ireland. Founded in 1921 in Illinois, Hollister has become one of the biggest employers in north Mayo since establishing its plant in Ballina in 1976. Speaking at the announcement in Ballina, local TD and Minister for Social Protection, Rural and Community Development, Dara Calleary said: 'This is a terrific day for Ballina with the announcement of 50 additional jobs for the town. After 50 years, Hollister is more than just a manufacturing plant in Ballina, it is a mainstay of our community. Today, second and third generations of families are employed there, boosting the local economy and contributing to the everyday life of the town.' Minister of State at the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment, Alan Dillon TD, described the investment as a 'powerful endorsement of Ballina's skilled workforce and Ireland's reputation as a hub for innovation in healthcare manufacturing'. The company manufactures products for ostomy care and continence care in their Ballina facility. It exports to 70 countries and has plants in India, Denmark, Lithuania and two in America. 'To see a long-standing employer, like Hollister, continue to grow and evolve through cutting-edge research and digital transformation is very encouraging,' said Mr Dillon. IDA Ireland CEO Michael Lohan congratulated Hollister and assured them of IDA Ireland's continued support. 'Supporting Hollister and companies across IDA Ireland's client portfolio with R&D investment and digital transformation endeavours sits right at the heart of Adapt Intelligently: A Strategy for Sustainable Growth and Innovation 2025-29,' he added. Shane Caher, Senior Director of Plant Operations and General Manager said the investment 'a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team'. Hollister, along with Westport-based AbbVie and Castlebar and Swinford-based Vantive, employ over 3,000 people in Mayo. Uncertainty was cast over their future operations in Ireland US President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on various EU goods earlier this year.
